PLANNING The original planning permission was granted by North Kesteven District Council on 06 June 2006 under the reference Ref 06/0205/FUL. 4 History In the aftermath of the first crusade that led to the capture of Jerusalem, the Christians decided there was a continuing need to protect pilgrims from Saracen attack. The outcome was the formation of the order originally known as 'The Poor Fellow Soldiers of Christ and of The Temple of Solomon'. For their headquarters they were given a piece of land in the precinct of the El Aksa mosque formerly Temple Moriah and supposedly the site of Temple Solomon. Hence the shortened name of Knights Templar. Temple Bruer was founded during the 12th century as an establishment of the Knights Templars. By the end of the 12th Century the place was reckoned as a full manor and had a village of 37 tenants attached to it. On the suppression of the Templars the property passed to the Hospitallers and became a Balliwick associated with the Great Lincolnshire Commandery at Eagle. At this time the estate was practicing sheep farming on a large scale and was producing a surplus of grain for market. The site of the Church was excavated in 1833 and again in It proved to consist of a typical 12th Century Templar 'Round Church' with a circular aisled nave and aspital aisle-less chancel. In the late 12th and early 13th Century the apse had been squared and two most unusual towers had been built flanking it. A western porch had also been added. In the 14th Century a large Chapel was built to the south. The only surviving feature above ground today is the south tower flanking the chancel of the Church. It dates from the early 13th Century, is three storeys high with the lower two built of finest ashlar and the uppermost of rubble and ashlar dressing. The ground floor (actually above ground level as the chancel of the Church was raised above a crypt) served as a Chapel. The Knights Hospitallers were suppressed by Henry VIII during the Reformation and Henry himself is believed to have stayed at Temple House. Indeed one bedroom is still described as ' The Kings Room'.

5 Situation Temple Farm is situated between the A15 Sleaford to Lincoln road and the A607 Grantham to Lincoln road and is north of the A17 Boston to Newark road. Temple Bruer itself is approximately 1.5 miles west of the A15 and some 5 miles from the market town of Sleaford. It enjoys a rural location on the Lincolnshire limestone heath being surrounded by gently rolling countryside. Sleaford sits on the cross roads of the A17 and A15 providing excellent access to several major towns together with the Cathedral City of Lincoln with its relatively new University, Peterborough and Nottingham. Sleaford is a fast expanding town offering a wide selection of businesses, social facilities and amenities as well as excellent primary and secondary schools. The A1 and Intercity rail services to London Kings Cross and Scotland are available at either Grantham 17 miles away or Newark some 18 miles away.
