4 Page 4 February 27 - March 4, 2016 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Garbage dumped near bus terminus Sir, Garbage is often dumped on the roadside outside T. Nagar Bus Terminus (Police Quarters Road, T. Nagar). It is an eyesore and a health hazard. I appeal to the Corporation to install a garbage bin in the spot or to declare the spot a litter-free zone. N. S. Prasad, Veerasamy Street, T. Nagar Hindi should be made compulsory in schools Sir, Tamilnadu Education Department should fall in line with its counterparts in other States of India. Hindi has long ago been declared as the official language of India and the same should be learnt by students in Tamilnadu as well. In the name of anti-hindi agitation, for over 65 years the children/students and the public in general have been prevented from learning Hindi in Tamilnadu, with the result that the mobility of persons in search of employment has been very much affected. In the recent past, the share of Tamilnadu in the All India Services selection has considerably dwindled. Tamil as first, English as second and Hindi as the third language should be made compulsory in all schools in Tamilnadu from at least Std. 1 onwards. This will enable the Tamil students to compete effectively in competitive examinations and will enable smooth mobility of work force from here to North India. K. Nagar, Ph: Traffic problems aplenty on North Boag Road Sir, To facilitate the Metrorail work on Anna Salai (between Gemini flyover and Nandanam junction), North Boag Road was made one-way allowing only north bound traffic and Anna Salai made one way allowing only south bound traffic. It appears that this may continue for 2/3 more years. The unavoidable one-way rule has led to heavy traffic on North and South Boag Roads. North Boag Road, being comparatively broad and straight, vehicles move fast, often at breakneck speeds particularly after Vijayaraghava Road junction. Pedestrians are finding it difficult to cross the road, especially during peak hours. The residents of the streets are also disturbed by the incessant blaring of horns by the drivers. With the opening of a multiplex theater near North Boag Road-G. N. Chetty Road junction, vehicle movement has further increased adding to the existing traffic problems. After residents made several requests, two speed breakers were installed at vantage points but they were removed when the road was re-laid recently. The traffic signal at North Boag Road-G. N. Chetty Road junction was deactivated for no reason when the road was made one-way. I appeal to the authorities concerned to immediately install and paint speed breakers on North Boag Road and also reactivate the existing traffic signals at the South Boag Road-G. N. Chetty Road junction for the benefit of the aggrieved pedestrians. S. Chandrasekhar, North Boag Road, T. Vasumathi Benny (Executive Director, Projects) told Mambalam Times that the renovation-cum-repair work included fixing of structural cracks, relaying of floor tiles, whitewashing and replacement of damaged furniture.. MTC issues free tokens to senior citizens Residential complexes become hostels Sir, Most of the commercial complexes on Usman Road/Ranganathan Street in T. Nagar, have been acquiring flats in residential complexes situated close to their showrooms and turning them into hostels for accommodating their employees. What is worrying is that they accommodate more than 10 employees in a flat creating problems for fellow-residents. In one such case, the owner of a chain of jewellery showrooms acquired a few flats in a complex and turned them into a hostel for girl students pursuing a nursing course in the college also run by him. In each flat, more than 10 persons have been accommodated. Aside from the very high usage of water, which is a scarce necessity in T. Nagar even after the December deluge, the already strained public utilities are unable to cope with the discharge with the result that sewage overflow within the complex has become a regular feature. Since complaints to the owner did not yield any result, the residents of the complex took up the issue with the local police. While submitting the complaint, we drew their attention to the Government Order in respect of running of hostels. The GO gives very clear guidelines and also pins responsibility on officials of various departments with regard to their implementation/enforcement. After several rounds of talks at the levels of Deputy Commissioner of Police/Asst. Commissioner of Police, the Inspector of Police of R1 Mambalam Police Station, Madley Road, T. Nagar, finally agreed to issue the CSR. As per the rule book, within 40 days of the issue of CSR, they should file an FIR and take action. In this case, the Inspector has not taken action in spite of several reminders and bringing the matter to the notice of the DCP/ACP. We then wrote to the Public Grievance Portal (PGP) of the Central Government. The PGP referred the issue to the Joint Commissioner of Police, South, who, in turn, referred it to the Inspector of Police. The Inspector then wrote to the PGP indicating that the Police Department has no role to play in this case and action has to be initiated by the Chennai Corporation. The PGP then wrote to us indicating the contention of the Inspector of Police. We again wrote to the PGP explaining our stand. This was again sent to the Inspector for reply. Yet again, the Inspector took the same stand. As could be seen from the Government Order, responsibility of each official has been clearly enunciated. And nowhere in the GO, does it indicate that it is under the purview of the Chennai Corporation. Under the circumstances, we wonder why the Inspector is so adamant in not taking any action. Does it not show the nexus between the police official and those who are running such hostels without following the guidelines in the Government Order? In case anything happens, who will be held responsible? What safety and security do the fellow-residents have then? When officials vested with authority do not implement/enforce orders, does it not amount to contempt? T. Nagar Residents Welfare Association, 30, Rangan Street, T. Nagar free travel in Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses. The scheme, to give ten free tokens a month, which was announced on Feb. 20, came into effect on Feb. 24. Tokens have so far been given to 27,900 persons. Serpentine queues of senior citizens were seen in several bus depots to collect the tokens. I have been waiting for two hours, said V. Ramabhadran who had come from Kodambakkam to collect the free coupons. I can save Rs. 250 per month with these tokens, he said, The tokens are open and can be used on any bus route except in Volvo buses. Switching buses along the route is not allowed. MTC is issuing tokens for four months so that the commuters do not have to come for them every month. An official told Mambalam Times that the tokens have the names of months printed on them and can be used only during those months. To obtain the tokens, one needs to present two passport size photos and an ID proof. Pensioners can submit their life certificates at the time of the verification. Pensioners should appear in person, with their pension payment order book and a copy of the same, before the pension accounts officer in Ripon Buildings on any working day between a.m and 4 p.m within the four-month period. The verification months have been allotted as follows: Pensioners who retired on or before March; April; May and June. CBSE Std. 12 exams from March 1 The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will conduct the Std. 12 board exams from March 1 to April 24 and Std. 10 board-based exams from March 1 to 28. Damaged cars dumped in parking zones A number of cars in damaged condition have been lying in the parking area on Bashyam Road, T. Nagar (outside Panagal Park) for several months. A nearby shop owner told Mambalam Times that when finding parking space in the neighbourhood has become tough, how could the authorities allow abandoned cars to be dumped in parking zones. He said that apart from vehicles damaged in accidents, several vehicles that were damaged in the floods last December are also found abandoned in parking zones. Raised manhole cover poses danger The manhole cover at the junction of Venkatraman Street and B. Narasimhan Road, T.Nagar has been fixed 2 feet above the road level. It poses a danger to motorists, especially 2-wheeler riders, as they can trip and fall while going over it. It is also not visible during night. Tree trunk caught under flyover poses danger A large portion of a tree trunk washed away during the floods last December is found lodged in the gap between the concrete beams under the flyover on Inner Ring Parallel Road. Nagar), Cosmonaut Salizhan Sharipov interacted with school students during National Science Day celebrations in Russian Cultural Center on Feb. 23.
