Nagar & Mambalam Vol. 22, No rd Issue : April 22-28, 2017 Ujala scheme for LED lights launched in Chennai The Central Govt. has launched its Ujala scheme in the city. Under the scheme, consumers can buy energy efficient LED bulbs, LED tubelights and fans at subsidized rates. The prices are Rs. 65 for 9 watt LED bulb, Rs. 1,150 for 50 watt energy efficient fan and Rs. 230 for 20 watt tubelight. The scheme is being implemented by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a JV under the administration of the Union Ministry of Power. Currently, the scheme has been launched only in Chennai. The appliances are available at select TANGEDCO collection centers in Chennai including this neighbourhood. The LED bulbs and tubelights come with a 3-year free replacement warranty. According to an EECl official, LED bulbs have a lifetime of 25,000 hours and consume only 1/10 th of the energy of filament bulbs. Ceiling fans are 30% more energy efficient compared to conventional fans, and LED tubelights are 50% more energy efficient than conventional 40 watt tubelights. During the distribution phase, warranty replacement can be done through any of the distribution counters at TANGEDCO cash collection centres. For more information, contact T. The photo shows a vinyl board fixed to the cart of a tender coconut vendor on Lake View Road, West Mambalam. Nungu arrives in city Nungu has started to arrive in the city. Vendors, mostly from Achirapakkam, were seen selling the fruit on pavements in the neighbourhood, especially near public places at bus stands, near T. Nagar bus terminus, outside Mambalam Station, Arya Gowda Road and other commercial areas. They are selling the fruit at Rs. 5 each. A vendor said that due to the heat wave in the city, there is a good demand for nungu. The photo was taken on April 20. Traffic police stop pipe laying work during daytime By Our Staff Traffic police were seen instructing contract workers of Metrowater to stop trench digging work during daytime for replacing a water pipe on Baroda Street Extension, close to its junction with Arya Gowda Road, West Mambalam on April 20. The workers were seen refilling the trench with earth. The police have instructed the workers to carry out the work only at night to ensure that there is no traffic problem on the busy Arya Gowda Road during daytime. Differently-abled students exhibit culinary skills By Our Staff The differentlyabled students of Arvind Institute of Vocational Excellence (575, 14th Street, 4th Sector, K. K. Nagar) exhibited their culinary skills during the Arvind s Café event on Saturday, April 15 in the Institute s premises. They cooked and served nutritious vegetarian dishes based on millet. Volunteer Vinoth helped the students set up the serving tables in a professional way, and install beach umbrellas and handmade hangings. They also designed an attractive menu card. The food served included Sukku coffee, millet based kheer, sweets and paniyaaram, and Vazhaipoo masala vadai. The students, who had been trained for the event, personally received the guests, guided them to tables, explained the menu, took orders and served the food in a professional manner, and also collected payment. Free Veda classes on weekends Under the auspices of Vedha Prapandha Samithi (T. I kindly request MTC authorities to extend the service to K. K. Nagar Sivan Park/ Pillayarkovil via Munusamy Salai and Rajamannar Salai. At present there is no bus service connecting Rajamannar Salai, Vijayaraghavapuram and Kannigapuram. The areas around Rajamannar Salai are thickly populated without any bus connectivity. 8 Page 6 City sizzles under heat wave Chennai has been reeling under a heat wave for the past few days with the average day temperature hovering around 40 degrees Celsius. The weathermen have said that the heat wave in likely to continue and have advised residents to stay indoors between noon and 3 p.m to avoid direct exposure to the sun. The highest recorded temperature during the week was 42.2 degrees Celsius in Meenambakkam for the second day on April 17. The temperature recorded at Nungambakkam observatory was 39.7 degrees Celsius, the second hottest day in April during the past decade. The highest recorded was 40.8 degrees Celsius on April 28, The Meteorological Department has warned that the heat wave, when the day temperature soars five to six degree Celsius above normal temperature, will prevail for a few more days. Meteorologists attributed the sudden rise in temperature to Cyclone Maarutha that made a landfall in Myanmar and pulled moisture away from the Tamilnadu region.
