Nagar, Mambalam and Kodambakkam. Traffic policemen were stationed at important junctions to regulate the traffic. Traffic official made further traffic diversions on the interior roads to ease traffic. Kodambakkam Bridge will remain closed to traffic on Saturdays and Sundays. in view of Children s Day. It had the now-forgotten singing star of yesteryears P. B. Rangachari, M. R.Santhanalakshmi, young S. Varalakshmi (later singing star of SouthIndian Cinema) and character actor and comedianm. R. Swaminathan. And, ofcourse, the inimitable pair N. S. Krishnan and his wife, T. A.Mathuram. One of the major personalities of Indian Cinema, now sadly neglected,raja Sandow, directed this film. The music direction was in the handsof Srinivasa Rao Shinde about whom little is known today. Among thetechnicians, the editor was a young man called S. Panjabi. His namewas actually S. Panchapakesan. In later years, along with his friendkrishnan, he would blossom forth as a top director of Indian Cinemaunder the professional name Krishnan-Panju. The film was shot inkandhan Studio, Coimbatore. The studio promoted during the late 1930swas active for a short while and then went out of existence. Balachandar had only a few songs, which he sang in ragas Saraswathiand Hamir Kalyani. He also had a duet with Varalakshmi rendered in theragatilakamodh. Balachandar was expected to playthe boy Naradar but, because of the school schedules, his father chosenot to have his son in the movie. A young girl from an educatedbrahmin family was finally chosen to don the male role. (Not many are aware that this writer, then a schoolboy in khakishorts, was selected to play this role but his grandmother threatenedto jump into the family well! Thus, his dreams of becoming a childstar in Tamil Cinema sank into the family well..!) After his schooling, Balachandar worked for sometime in the MusicDepartment of the Gemini Studios. The noted film music composer whointroduced new trends in film music during 1940s, S. Rajeswara Rao and theclassical Carnatic Musictrained M. D. Parthasarathy were in charge ofthe music wing where Balachandar learned orchestration, song composing,and other elements of film music. Besides, he learned to play manyinstruments both Indian and Western, which helped him in large measurewhen he began to compose music for films. During that period,balachander, dressed in shorts and wearing khakipith hat and cyclingfrom his residence in Mylapore to the Gemini Studios was a familiarsight to many residents of that area. Balachandar scaled higher in 1948 with an offbeat Tamil social, Ithu Nijama?. During the period comprising largelymythologicals, folk tales, sentimental tear-jerking family dramaandboy meets girl and such kind of stories, this film came as whiff offresh air into the staid and stagy atmosphere. Balachandar not onlywrote the screen storybut also played a double role of the twins,composed the music and also was the chief assistant director. The filmwas produced and directed by one of the finest cinematographers ofindian Cinema, Krishna Gopal. Familiarly known K.G., he was noted forhis high quality of work. In later years, he designed and built thefirst color laboratory in south India at the Gemini Studio for S. S.Vasan. S Soundararajan bankrolled the film, which was shot at thefamous Ranjith Studios, Bombay. Ithu Nijama? was a faithful adaptation of the popular Hollywoodmovie of 1945, Wonder Man. Produced by the famous Hollywood moviemogul Samuel Goldwyn, the film had the well-known Hollywood star andcomedian Danny Kaye playing the roles of the twins. Others includedwell-known actresses of the period Vera Allen, Virginia Mayo, and thedelightful character actor S. Z. Cuddles Sakall. Wonder Man wasa big success all over and ran for many weeks at Madras drawing largecrowds when the film was released at the end of the Second World War( ). Ramachandran, IAS passes away He was 86. Ramachandran had retired as Finance Secretary to Government of India and was later Executive Director, Asian Development Bank, Manila. As Joint Secretary in Prime Minister s Secretariat under Indira Gandhi, Ramachandran initiated and played a crucial role in the nationalisation of banks in He was Member Secretary of the 6th Finance Commission. Ramachandran was Finance Secretary in the Central Government during the tumultuous transition of power from Congress to Janatha Party in 1977, and was one of the very few officers who enjoyed the confidence of both regimes equally. Earlier, he had played a similar role in 1967 when, as Finance Secretary to Tamilnadu Government, he facilitated a smooth transition of power from the Congress to DMK. He was held in equally high esteem by K. Kamaraj, M. Bhakthavatsalam and C. N. Annadurai. He had been Collector of Coimbatore and Director of Handlooms in the Tamilnadu Government. Earlier, he was Private Secretary to Chief Minister Rajaji. A student of Loyola College, Ramachandran secured the University first rank both in BA and MA, and was again the all-india top ranker in the IAS competitive examination in Ramachandran is survived by his sons Ganapathy and Arun and daughter Geetha and grandchildren. Nagar Residents Welfare Association s meeting held on Nov. 10, a resident from Rameswaram Road, came up with a host of civic issues plaguing residents on his street. While he was assured of help and assistance, the resident was asked to mobilize the residents of Rameswaram Road and present to the Association a detailed plan of action. Even after the passage of two weeks, nothing has been heard from the resident. An association is formed by a group of residents working for their welfare. It can function beneficially only if there is active participation by its residents. It is all the more so for those Associations whose residents encounter problems.
