NAGAR EDITION October 27 - November 2, 2013 Ashok Nagar commuters benefit from minibus service FREE The Tamilnadu Government on October 23 introdu-ced 50 minibuses on 20 inner suburban routes in Chennai that lack adequate public transport facility, including through Ashok Nagar area. The minibuses have been introduced to provide better last-mile connectivity in the suburban areas. For Ashok Nagar area, the minibus route starts from Ashok Pillar and goes via 1 st Avenue, 4 th Avenue, Dr. Ambedkar Salai, Powerhouse and ends in Mehta Nagar. The route passes close to many inner lanes and hence benefits a large number of commuters who need to walk a lot lesser distance to catch public transport buses. The fares are Rs. 5, Rs. 6 and Rs. 8, depending on the stage. Initially the buses will stop according to the commuters convenience till fixed locations are identified en route, said an official. During this cracker season, your pets get frightened of the sounds, and tend to take shelter under the cots in dark rooms. Some dogs are so cared of these sounds that they do not even come out for answering nature s calls, and some even go off during the Deepavali season. Is it not a pity that, when you and your family are enjoying the lights and sounds, your pets should spend their time in isolation and in darkness? It is possible for you to train your dog also to enjoy the lights and sounds, and also the good food during this festival season. Fire department gears up for Diwali, reinforces its arsenal Ahead of Diwali next week, the Tamilnadu Fire and Rescue Services (TNFRS) department has identified 53 locations in and around the city, including this neighbourhood, as being vulnerable to fire accidents. About 15 fire tenders requisitioned from other districts will be positioned along with 50 Metrowater tanker lorries in some of these areas, including T. Nagar Bus Terminus, MGR Nagar (Nesapakkam) and Dr Ambedkar Salai (Ashok Nagar) in this neighbourhood. About 200 firemen from fire stations outside Chennai will also be deployed. An official said that they have already conducted mock exercises to assess the response time and have made improvements to the system. Fire fighters will be equipped with smaller vehicles to pump water and four bikes to gain access to the spot of a fire in congested areas, narrow alleys and slums. According to M.S. Rajendran (General Secretary, Tamilnadu Auto Drivers Uni-on), ever since the new rule was announced, RTOs have been insisting that they produce the original documents of the auto for verification. They distributed pamphlets and made public announcements about the ban on carrying any kind of explosives, including crackers, on trains. K. P. Sebastian (Sub-Inspector, Mambalam Railway Protection Force) said that violation of the rule will attract a fine of up to Rs. 1,000 and imprisonment up to 3 years. He said the announcements will continue till Diwali. The upgraded hi-tech CCTV cameras in Mambalam Railway Station were inaugurated in June this year, he added. 16 cameras have been installed in strategic locations to monitor crowds. The camera feeds are being monitored round-the-clock by 16 CCTV cameras functioning in Mambalam Railway Station RPF personnel from the control room which has been provided with 42 inch displays. The cameras have been fitted over platforms, railway reservation counters and footbridges. The storage has enough capacity to record the feeds for 30 days, he added. Nagar, wherein the commercial complex owners, in a bid to expand their area of operation and quench their insatiable thirst to earn further, are targeting the nearby residential dwellings. The modus operandi is to lure the owners of the flats to sell their property by offering them hefty amounts. Once they are able to trap a few flat-owners to do so, they then deploy pressure tactics to eject those who are hard nuts to crack. Such are the crude methods employed that it becomes impossible and intolerable for the strong willed ones to bear the brunt and they finally give up their fight. 8 Page 8 CCTV cameras deployed to monitor crowds during Diwali About 15 CCTV cameras are functioning in sensitive locations in T. Nagar to monitor traffic and crowds during Diwali. The feeds are fed to monitors in nearby police assistant booths and also to the Deputy Commissioner s Office (T. Nagar zone) for continuous monitoring. CCTV cameras have been installed at busy junctions including outside T. Nagar bus terminus, Ranganathan Street, Pothys junction and Panagal Park. More than two hundred policemen, traffic personnel and home guards have been deployed to monitor busy junctions and assist shoppers. Manned pickets have also been put up at sensitive locations to avoid any untoward incidents. Besides, personnel of as many as 10 teams from the Crime wing of the Police Dis- trict, in plain clothes, will be assisting the men in uniforms, to keep a tab on past criminals who could attempt any offence in the area.
