1 MAMBALAM TIMES ASHOK NAGAR - K.K. NAGAR EDITION Vol. 15, No. 17 & 18 November 6-12, 2016 Two home alone women murdered within 48 hours In a span of 48 hours, two elderly women were found murdered in their homes in T. Nagar. On the evening of Nov. 2, a 58-year-old lawyer, P. Lakshmi Sudha, was found stabbed to death in her flat in Devan Colony, Muthalamman Koil Street and on Nov. 1, 60- year-old Shanthi was found gagged and smothered to death in her house on Habibullah Road, T. Nagar. Sudha s maid Vimala came to clean the house at around 5 p.m and found the door locked from inside. When the doorbell went unanswered, she called Sudha s elder sister Vidya living close by. She had a duplicate key to the flat. The two women let themselves in and were shocked to find Lakshmi s blood-ridden body in the bedroom. They immediately called the police. According to the police, Sudha s body was badly decomposed when found and she must have been murdered at least 2 days back. According to her uncle Sundaram living in the same apartment, Sudha, a divorcee, had stopped practising and was living alone in the flat. He told the police that her son Karthi-keyan lived in 23,000 copies of this edition are delivered FREE every Sunday! Bengaluru. The police said that there were around ten stab marks on the back and there were no signs of robbery. In the other murder, Shanthi was found dead with her hands gagged and throat slit, suggesting a pre-planned murder. Relatives of the victim, visited the house as she had not responded to phone calls since Deepavali night and were shocked by what they saw inside the house. Police officers suspect Shanthi, a spinster, could have been murdered by robbers since her close relatives said that about 60 sovereigns of jewell-ery were missing from the house. The team found a cement window grille broken and suspect the robbers must have entered the house through the opening. Family members told police that they had last spoken to Shanthi on Oct. 30. Police are looking at CCTV footage from the houses on the street for leads. Shanthi had been staying in an old building, her ancestral home, for nearly three decades. According to the police, there have been no breakthroughs in either of the cases so far. FREE

It is blocking the way for pedestrians. The transformers in Subba Street, West Mambalam were replaced with Ring Main Units (RMU) on Nov. 2. The work was supervised by senior TNEB officials. 4 Page 4 November 6-12, 2016 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK Rotary Deepavali treat for special kids By RANDOR GUY TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC 29 Dhandapani Desikar had a tough time during the recording of his songs for the Gemini Nandanar. Vasan made him sing many songs repeatedly in the recording theater before he felt satisfied and okayed them, much to the discomfort, disgust, dejection and even anger of the famed singer! Indeed Desikar stopped talking to Vasan for a long time thereafter! Desikar s most admirable asset was his excellent and melodious voice. According to Mr. Fielden, the first Director-General of All India Radio, Desikar s voice was the only one among the Classical Carnatic musicians of that day acceptable, according to the voice culture standards of Classical Western Music. The members of Rotary Club International (District 3230, T. Nagar) celebrated He described the others as mere crooners!. Aanadha Deepvali with Vasan created sensation when he announced a Ten Thousand Rupees - Song Contest for Nandanar. It was the first nearly 1600 special children from all Chennai area schools time such contest was launched in Indian Film History! Many and homes on Oct.23. S. could not believe it. Ten thousand rupees was a mega buck Mahaveer Bothra (Chairman,Team Aanandha fortune in 1943! The rules were simple. One had to get a coupon given along with a ticket at any cinema where the movie was Deepavali ) said that the spebeing screened. The coupon-holder had to select The Three Best Songs in the movie and enter them in the coupon in the order of his preference. The coupon then had to be deposited in a box kept at the movie theater. That was all! If more than one correct solution was submitted, the prize money would be divided among the winners. Vasan had deposited the list containing the correct solution in a sealed envelope with the Indian Bank, First Line Beach, Madras, on the day before Nandanar was released. The contest generated enormous public interest and enthusiasm. In addition, it sold tickets contributing to the box-office success of Nandanar! Nandanar was a major success of 1943 when Madras was caught in the web of the Japanese bomb scare during the Second World War ( ). Indeed the city was evacuated for a short time in 1942, which came to be known as the Evacuation Period. Real estate values crashed and many houses sported TO LET boards with no takers. Indeed a weekly came up with a famous cartoon depicting two villagers walking around the city and noticing the boards. One says. I wonder who this Mr. Tolet Dorai is, owning so many houses in the city! Must be a rich Dorai! Ra. Krishnamurti (Kalki), who by now had promoted his own successful weekly Kalki after splitting with Vasan, reviewed the film. He took exception to a comedy scene which he called as vulgar and even obscene. In that scene a rat enters a man s dhoti and he jumps around while the rat is active inside his nether garment! Fortunately, VHS prints of Nandanar are available in the video market. Some twenty years ago, a LP-Record of the film songs was released but sadly, no audio cassette tape was brought out. It s still not too late... - The Origins of Playback Singing The voice-lending off-screen playback singing system is part and parcel of the Indian motion picture. Indeed such singers who sing behind the screen are themselves as much stars as their on-screen colleagues. Raised manhole cover poses danger The cover of a manhole in the junction of Rajan Street and Thirumurthy Street, T. Nagar has been fixed a foot above the road level. It poses a danger to motorists, especially 2-wheeler riders as they can trip and fall while going over it. It is also not visible during night. Free lung function tests today Dr. S. NO HOLDS BARRED By M. A. SADANAND Medical Supermarket Yesterday you were wailing about your back-crick! Vanished so fast? At your age you have no business to clean-and-jerk a 20-kilo flower pot, accused friendly neighbourhood policeman. Went to the Medical Supermarket you know, the arcade that has 30 doctors all under one roof. The General Practitioner took but a fraction of a second to decide that I must be examined by 13 specialist chaps there. The blighter did not even ask me what I had for breakfast or whether my wife prefers jasmine to rose. He didn t even touch me at the sore spot but straightaway filed 13 sheets and ordered me to come back with all the reports within three days. I asked him why I should meet the venereologist. He said, quoting Napoleon, that nothing is impossible. He said that the crick may look like a common one, the crick-in-thestreet, but to the doctor it may be symptomatic of anything from cancer to AIDS. Mind you, AIDS! I almost choked at the insinuation. This young rascal who probably got a seat for doing MBBS paying Rs. 1 crore, and another Rs. 2 crores for his MD, and more for his MCH, accuses me of being, probably, a gay. That was the unkindest cut of all. He cast a sly look at me as if to say one never knows. What were the other tests for? A CAT-scan for a mere Rs. 8,000 had top billing. No diagnosis is complete without the inside story! And it would be a shame not to take the E.E.G along with the scan for a fleabite of another Rs The GP loves me so much that it would be unethical to send me away without a look at my stomach via the endoscope for another piddly Rs The boiler-room picture may disclose the real villain of the piece. There could be more in the stomach than meets the eye. You may wonder why he included a leprologist in the medical commission probing my health. He saw a patch near the crick-zone and presto! I must prove that it isn t leprosy. Even I knew that a pin-prick would have proved it, but this great healer didn t. I told him that and the prick made me yell. So he crossed out the skinner from the panel. A kidney-tap was but routine in such cases. Look at what happened to MGR, was his selling line. So a nephrologist was drafted to save me. Having started with the head and travelled to the stomach and the kidneys, it would be discriminatory to leave out the good old heart that had been pumping true royal blood non-stop for 83 years. (By the way, the blood looks red and not a bit blue though my mother s father was a Kshatriya prince of Pazhayangadi!) We will get the best cardiologist in town to check your pump. Just a thousand rupees for that, he added. The dentist who presides over the first line of defence would have to clear me before any medicine could pass through my mouth. Perhaps my gleaming set of teeth may have to go! If, after all these tests, nothing is seen, then a session with the great humanist, the Pulmonary chap, is a bonus to clear me for ever...for almost a gift rate of Rs Dr. Guruswamy Mudaliar would have, by a mere touch, diagnosed it without this syndicate of grabbers. I paid the tout his 500 rupee fee and escaped. On my way home I stepped into one of the craters so lovingly laid by the Corporation and, when I stood up covered with slush, the crick had vanished. You would have fallen among thieves... Free eye screening for diabetics on Nov. 14 Radhatri Nethralaya (12, Hindi Prachara Sabha Street, T.
