5 September 13-19, 2014 Mambalam couple on holiday rescued from flood-ravaged J&K What was meant to be a six-day tour of scenic Jammu and Kashmir turned out to be a life threatening nightmare for 60-year-old Ganesan Subbarayan and his 53-year-old wife Mahalakshmi Ganesan (residents of West Mambalam) who got caught in the deluge that hit the state. The couple, who were stranded in a fire station building in flood ravaged Srinagar, were air-lifted in a chopper to a military rescue camp and then flown in a military transport aircraft to New Delhi on Sept. 9. As per their scheduled tour, they were to visit Sonmarg, Pahalgam and Gulmarg before boarding a flight home on Sep. 12. Nagar) by bloc-king the footboard of the bus and not giving way to boarding and alighting passengers. Even when there is enough space inside the bus, they crowd the footboard, bang the body of the bus and sing and converse loudly. The drivers and the bus conductors too are helpless as the students get violent and throw expletives when confronted. I appeal to the traffic police to depute their personnel at the bus spot during school opening and closing hours to take control or take action against these students. Nagar) with a concrete surface, on top of the previously laid cement road that was patently of an extremely poor quality after I invoked information under the RTI Act. The new surface also has several defects. A number of large cracks have already developed on the road. Many of the 2-foot-deep pits dug on the road margins for the purported rain water harvesting either have no slabs or the slabs have broken and caved in. The pits not only pose a danger to unwary motorists but will get filled with water during rains and become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. The pavement laid long ago with interlocking slabs has been damaged by the workers while laying the road. Debris left over after laying the road which was dumped on the pavement is yet to be removed. All the manholes are yet to be constructed and these collect water, causing mosquito breeding, besides posing a threat to the life and limbs of the unwary twowheeler drivers during the nights. I have sought further information under the RTI Act. I am appalled at the attitude of the officials and counselors of the area regarding this kind of shoddy work. Four championship shows along with obedience, agility, field, Gundog, Schutzhund (a special test for German Shepherd breed dogs) and four other specialty shows are being held. According to one of the judges, the main objective of conducting these shows is to improve the quality and breeding of pedigree dogs and popularise some of the fast vanishing breeds (especially the Indian ones). The competition has attracted 680 entries comprising 57 breeds from all over India. The events will be judged by 12 international judges.
