3 The second phase of oral polio vaccine for 2016 will be administered to children below 5 years on Sunday, Feb. 21 under the Pulse polio immunization program. The first phase was held on Jan.17. Children under 5 should be immunized irrespective of their Polio immunization drive tomorrow previous immunization status. Sick children, including those affected by diarrhea, can also be administrated the polio drops. The Corporation Commissioner said that the quality of oral vaccination has been certified by the World Health Organization and it would not cause any side effects. He said that the vaccine can be administered to children even if they had been given oral drops in the recent past. The vaccine will be administered at the following centers in T. 4 Page 4 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Consumers suffer as EB delays replacing faulty meters Sir, Water inundated several residential complexes on the streets off Usman Road, T. Nagar during the heavy rains followed by floods last December. As a result, the power meters which got submerged in water in some of these complexes got damaged. Due to the faulty meters, the reading personnel who came on Feb. 4, could not record the consumption for the period Dec. 15 to Jan. 16. This forced the consumers to rush to the EB office to ascertain the amount payable so as to avoid power disconnection. In such cases, EB calculates the consumption based on the highest consumption in a year divided by two. An EB official informed the consumers that as thousands of meters had gone faulty, the replacement could take time. He also said that the lack of enough manpower could further delay the process of replacement of the faulty meters. This would mean that the affected consumers will have to pay the amount based on the above formula till such time the meters are replaced. The question is: Why should the consumers suffer for no fault of theirs? Secondly, there could be consumers whose average monthly consumption maybe lower than the amount arrived at by the formula used by EB as in any particular month during the year consumption could have gone up due to unavoidable reasons. It is a grossly unfair method of calculation employed by EB whose responsibility it is to immediately replace the faulty meters. V. S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar. Poorly maintained govt. plot in Burkit Road Sir, The plot belonging to Tamilnadu Hindu Religious Endowment Board at 35, Burkit Road, T, Nagar is not maintained properly. There is an overgrowth of bushes and the plot is being used as a dumping ground for garbage and other waste.the mosquito population in the colony is growing rapidly as the bushes provide a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Metrowater engineer acts swiftly to arrest sewage problem Sir, On Feb. 15, at round 9 a.m, when I was standing in the queue to get my monthly quota of ration at the shop on Rameswaram Road, T. Nagar, I noticed sewage overflowing from a manhole and stagnating on the road. The sewage overflow was causing lot of hardship to the consumers lined up outside the ration shop. Also, there is another building on the road that houses a canteen and serves as a hostel for hundreds of women working in a nearby textile showroom. I immediately telephoned Nelliappar (Engineer, Zone 10, Ward 136) and informed him about the overflow. He took swift action and within minutes, deployed a team of workers to clear the block in the manhole. I was still in the queue when the work was started. Last month, Ashok Nagar ACP Arumugam and his team conducted a security awareness program in our complex comprising 36 flats. The meeting was attended by all flat residents. Arumugam demonstrated various security measures to be followed in an apartment complex and individual flats. He explained the importance of verifying the antecedents of tenants before renting flats and also of servants and security personnel before employing them. He also stressed the importance of maintaining a gate register to monitor the entry of service personnel like courier boys, electricians and plumbers. He also offered various other tips to improve security. Lakshmi (resident of 31, Lake View Road, West Mambalam), who runs Anbu Karangal (an orphanage and old age home at 1/216, Vivekanander Street, Kottivakkam) has appealed for donations. According to Lakshmi, there are nearly 100 residents of which 50 are students and the rest aged persons. Anbu Karangal provides free shelter, food, education and medical assistance to its inmates. Lakshmi said that Anbu Karangal, which was started in 1996, is run with donations from individuals, organizations, its past residents and philanthropists. She said that several of its past residents successfully completed their education and are well settled in life.
