Nagar No playground for kids Sir, Does the Government or the Corporation have the absolute right to snatch away a children s playground for dumping materials for public utility purposes? Do the children of Chennai have a right for a playground in their locality? I am not sure. There is rather, there was, a playground for children in the Lotus Colony area of Nandanam. A decade ago it was handed over to some contractor for dumping sewage. He held on to it for several years. It was highlighted in Mambalam Times also. A couple of years ago it was cleared but remained unfit for playing purposes. The ground was rough with waste lying around. Some months back children started playing despite unplayable conditions. Now, suddenly, the ground has again been taken over by some contractor for dumping his utility materials. Our Government claims to be deeply interested in promoting sports. Huge amounts are awarded to sports persons after they achieve high laurels. What about the fundamentals? Where will children enjoy themselves playing and running around. Are they to play on the streets only endangering their lives against oncoming cars and other vehicles? How does a civilised Government tackle the issue of helping the contractors for dumping their wares. By depriving the kids of their right to play in a ground? Is there an answer? T. Senior citizens forced to stand Sir, I was surprisingly shocked to see senior citizens being made to stand at the special counter for them in the ground floor of Indian Bank s West Mambalam branch. The special counter for senior citizens was opened when the branch shifted to its present premises to prevent elderly people from waiting in queues. Though there is a token system for the general counters upstairs, there is no such system for senior citizens and they have to stand in queues. This not only affects the orderliness, but also forces elderly people to stand for a long time. S. Deepak, Ashok Nagar No water in booths for pedestrians Water booths installed for the benefit of thirsty pedestrians during summer are not functioning in many spots in the neighbourhood. Political party workers and members of some organizations had set up the water booths but many now lack water containers. The booths on the pavement are now only a hindrance to pedestrians who are forced to walk on the road.
