Nagar among areas to be developed under Smart City project Setting the stage for implementing the Rs.1, 366- crore Smart City project, the Tamilnad Government issued an order on May 24 for formation of Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), a requirement to get funds from the Union Urban Development Ministry. The SPV for Chennai, among the top 20 cities selected for the program, will plan, approve, release funds, implement, manage and evaluate development under the project. An official communication from Greater Chennai Corporation on May 25 said that Chennai Smart City Ltd (CSCL) was formed under the Companies Act, It will be promoted jointly by the State Government and the Corporation, both having 50:50 equity shareholding, it said. In T. Nagar, selected for area-based proposal in the project, the focus will be on electrical network, water supply, sewerage, storm water drainage, solid waste management, IT connectivity and digitization, sanitation, pedestrian friendly pathways and ramps, non-motorised transport, intelligent traffic management systems and retrofitting of green open spaces. Under the pan-city plan, smart solutions using information and communication technology have been proposed for non-motorised transport and water management. Nagar has run into opposition from private car operators and residents. While the car operators fear the widened pavement will eat into parking space, residents are against removal of ramps extending from their buildings to the footpath. The 3.8-km. cycle track, covering P. T. Rajan Salai, Lakshmanswamy Salai and Ramaswamy Salai, was proposed to benefit thousands of students going to schools and tuition centers in the vicinity. The Rs. 3-crore project includes widening of pavements, laying a smooth, cement concrete carriageway and laying a cycle track alongside the footpath as per Indian Roads Congress standards. Experts feel that the project could have been a good model to replicate in other areas as cycling has become difficult in the city. Work on the project that missed its March deadline was slowed down because of opposition from private car operators and residents. There are several car operators in and around Lakshmanswamy Salai and Ramaswamy Salai who park their vehicles on pavements and roadsides which hinder our work, especially at night. They fear it would lead to removal of their illegal ramps and they won t be able to take their vehicles out, said a senior Corporation official. On several occasions, workers of the contractor concerned were threatened and asked to stop the work, he added. Also, traffic police are yet to make Lakshmanswamy Salai and Ramaswamy Salai one-way stretches as part of the project. We have completed one side of Lakshmanswamy Salai and Ramaswamy Salai. We even saw several children in the neighbourhood cycling along the completed portion of the track. But its use can be realised only after the entire loop is completed, the official said. A survey found that about 1,000 cyclists use the stretch in an hour (during school hours) and the number is likely to go up after completion of the cycle track. Tahaer Zoyab, co-founder of Triple O Studio that designed the project, said: We hope the attitude of people in nearby areas will change and they will encourage their children to cycle. Uprooted tree damages compound wall, storm water drain The compound wall of a house in Anugraha Colony, 3 rd Avenue, Ashok Nagar was damaged when an avenue tree outside it toppled over last week. Nearby residents told Mambalam Times that that the vehicle was used at a nearby construction site and later left on the pavement by the workers after the work was stopped at the site. It is blocking the way for the pedestrians. Nagar. The garbage often overflows from the bins as it is not cleared regularly by Corporation workers. Often the bins are found close to the middle of the road causing hindrance to motorists. On May 12, I collected the application form for issue of free MTC bus pass for me and my wife from the counter at T. Nagar Bus Stand. When I approached the MTC office the next day to submit the filled in application form along with the relevant documents, the staff at the counter refused to accept it stating that he was busy with the issue of regular bus passes and asked me to come a week later. To my dismay, I found there were three counters in operation and there was hardly any crowd at any of these. My repeated requests to the staff only fell on deaf ears and I had to return without getting the free bus passes. I don t understand why the staff are harassing senior citizens who want to avail of the free bus pass. Ph: Vendor found murdered under flyover Paraman, a 32-year-old pushcart vendor, was found stabbed to death under the Usman Road flyover on May 26 night. Paraman, a resident of Ambattur, who sold his wares under the flyover, had a long-standing feud with a relative, Ayyanar, police said, which could be the motive for the murder. Police said Paraman lived with his paternal grandmother Rani. His aunt Jeeva had an inter-caste marriage with Ayyanar which been the cause of the quarrel in the family. Ayyanar owed money to Rani. Ayyanar is in the same business as Paraman and operates around 10 pushcarts under the Usman Road flyover. Paraman had repeatedly asked Ayyanar to return the money he owed to Rani, a police officer said. After preliminary investigation, Ayyanar is our prime suspect, he added. Mambalam police registered a case and started an investigation.
