But there is no wall on the edge of the new causeway which poses a danger to motorists and pedestrians. Motorists have appealed for placing barricades along the edge of causeway till such time a wall is constructed. Ragavendar (Ph: ). CCTV footage leads to arrest of serial jewel thief Police arrested 45-year-old N. Basker (a resident of Mogappair) near Panagal Park on the charge of attempting to steal jewellery from a shop in North Usman Road on May 11. According to the police, the attempt to steal came to notice when the jewellery shop manager, during a routine check of the CCTV camera feed for the day, noticed a couple who had come to the shop as customers acting suspiciously while looking at jewellery shown to them by the counter salesmen. They said that the couple left the shop after spending half an hour without buying anything. The showroom owner filed a complaint in Pondy Bazaar Police Station. Based on the CCTV footage, police received information through their sources that Basker was seen in Panagal Park. They immediately sent a team to pick him up for questioning. Police told Mambalam Times that Basker, during interrogation, confessed to stealing jewellery from several shops in T. Nagar and Pondy Bazaar in the past four years. 30 sovereigns of jewellery worth Rs. 6.2 lakhs were seized from him. Basker s modus operandi was to visit jewellery shops in the guise of a customer, divert the attention of salesmen and steal jewels, an officer said. The accused has been remanded to judicial custody. NGO offers to plant saplings in houses, offices The NGO Thuvakkam has launched Project Pasumai to bring greenery to every household in the city. On request from a resident, the NGO will plant a sapling free in his/her house. In order to keep the chain of green flowing, each person is requested to nominate one other person in whose house or office a sapling can be planted. Both residents and vendors are equally responsible for it. As the garbage is not cleared regularly and the bins become full, residents throw garbage in the surroundings. Residents have noticed even the door-todoor garbage collectors dumping garbage in the junction instead of carrying it to the collection center. It is turning into a severe health hazard and there is proliferation of mosquitoes as well. Street dogs and stray cattle have a field day. This has been going on for several months and no action is being taken in spite of several complaints to the officials in the Corporation Zonal Office. 8 Page 8 Residents campaign against NOTA option The residents of an apartment complex in Bazullah Road have put up a notice on the gate of their building requesting voters not to use NOTA option and cast their vote for a candidate during the Assembly elections on May 16. A flat resident said that the apex Resident Association of T. Nagar had resorted to a massive campaign requesting residents not to go for NOTA which, according to the flat residents, is not the correct approach. So, they had decided to put up the notice outside their apartment to educate the voters. For more details, call / or visit A mini van in a broken down condition has been lying on the road margin of Mambalam High Road, T. Nagar near the subway for several days. Its windscreen is broken and the body crumpled on one side. Many such vehicles are found abandoned on road margins and pavements of streets in the neighbourhood, but no action is being taken by the authorities to trace the owners and get the vehicles removed. They are not only an eyesore but also cause inconvenience to road users. It has formed a big loop and is blocking the pavement. There is likelihood of someone tripping and falling in the night as it is not visible when it is dark. There is also the risk of electrocution in case of damage to insulation. Will the EB officials take immediate steps to relay the cable below the surface?
