Anand (52) of Jafferkhanpet were arrested in MGR Nagar for allegedly forging the seal and signature of Mambalam-Guindy taluk s tahsildar. Police seized 32 rubber seals from them. Police said Anand ran a pan shop, while Subramani was jobless. Ananda Maharajan, the tahsildar, on Feb. 20 found that his signature had been forged on several documents that he had received in the last few days. He told police when one of his seniors forwarded him a letter to verify the signature he had found it had been forged. A few days earlier, Chandrakanth, a man from Maharajan s jurisdictional area, came to the tahsildar s office with a legal heir certificate in which the tahsildar found his signature and seal had been forged. Based on a tip from Chandrakanth, a team headed by Ashok Nagar Asst. Commissioner Hari Kumar and MGR Nagar police arrested the duo. Police said the two men had been arrested in 2008 in Tambaram for a similar offence. They charged Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 10,000 for forging signatures. They took samples of seals from the tahsildar s office and forged signatures on community certificates, education certificates and property documents. Deepa launches MGR Amma Deepa Peravai Flag Late J. Jayalalithaa s niece Deepa Jayakumar (a resident of Sivagnanam Street, T. Nagar) floated MGR Amma Deepa Peravai, in her residence at 6 p.m on Feb. 24 on the occasion of her aunt s 69 th birth anniversary. She also unveiled the flag for the outfit. Thousands of supporters, who had gathered outside her residence from 9 a.m, shouted slogans in support of Deepa. Bike rider dies in mishap A 2-wheeler rider died on the spot while trying to overtake an MTC bus (Route 37 D) on Feb. 22 on P. T.Rajan Salai, K. K. Nagar. Suresh Kumar (29), a native of Aruppukottai who was working as a supervisor in an apartment complex in Virugambakkam,, was on his way to his workplace. When he tried to overtake the bus, he lost control and fell under a rear wheel of the bus. Guindy traffic police sent the body to hospital for post-mortem. More details can be had in Has narrow escape even as friend falls to death from train Praveen Raj, an employee in a private firm in Kodambakkam, died after falling from the footboard of an overcrowded compartment of a running suburban train. His friend C. Sudhakar (an accountant in a private firm in T. Nagar), who was standing next to him, managed to hold on to the pole and survived. Seven passengers fell down and three lost their lives in the tragic incident that took place at around 9 a.m on Feb. 23 between Palavanthangal and St. Thomas Mount stations. According to Sudhakar (a resident of Perungalathur), some other boys were also travelling on the footboard at that time. All of a sudden Praveen, who was standing next to him, was pulled down by the other boys who had slipped off the train. I felt a jerk of somebody pulling me outwards, but managed to hold on to the pole tightly. There were screams and I soon realized that many had fallen off the train including my friend, he said. The alarm chain did not work and there was no other option except to wait for the train to reach Guindy station. I and a number of co-passengers ran on the tracks to the spot where the boys had fallen. My friend had got caught under the wheels of the train and his body parts were strewn on the tracks. The sight still haunts me, he added. I am having nightmares and have taken a vow never to travel on the footboard of a bus or a train, he concluded. I have been living in this locality for more than 22 years and have never seen this place being developed. People dump garbage every day. Leftovers, plastic plates from weddings and other stuff get scattered all over the road. A piece of tree trunk has remained stuck above the bridge since the flood in There is a spot in the service road where there is no barricade between the road and river. (It actually isn t a river. All we can see is garbage dumped in it and the Corporation never bothers to actually clean it or provide a barricade). All we residents seek is cleaning of the river and clearing of the garbage. A proper barricade between the road and the river is also necessary for the safety of people who use this road every day. Leander Sachin, K. K. Original width to be restored in stretch of Anna Salai The stretch of Anna Salai between Saidapet junction and DMS will soon be restored to its original width, freeing traffic on what has become a congested stretch. An average Tamil film had as many as songs and some even had many more. The more the merrier was the motto! Pavalakodi (1934), which introduced many major talents to Tamil cinema had as many as 50 songs. The composer was Papanasam Sivan. M. K. T. Bhagavathar, S. D. Subbulakshmi (later a noted star), and the sadly neglected filmmaker K. Subramaniam, took their bow in this film. The film proved a hit mainly because of its songs. However, Pavalakodi was not Papanasam Sivan s first film. His debut was in Seetha Kalyanam (1933). Its genesis, or back story, as they say in Hollywood, is interesting. Indeed the name Papanasam Sivan is itself a misnomer. He was neither from Papanasam nor his name was Sivan! His name was Ramaiah and he was an ascetically lean, pious, orthodox Brahmin from Polagam, a small village in Thanjavur district. Though he was born into a well-to-do family, due to quirks of fate, he spent his early years in poverty and left home to live in Trivandrum, (now Thiruvananthapuram), the capital of the maharaja-ruled state Travancore. Here he learnt music under the noted composer Neelakanta Sivan. In deference to his guru, he started calling himself himself Sivan. He visited temples and sacred places in south India and, in inspired moments of sheer ecstasy, he composed songs in Classical Carnatic style in many ragas. After marriage and children, he needed a steady income and he relocated himself in Papanasam, the picturesque small town near Thanjavur. Here he eked out a precarious living, teaching music and as a performing artiste. He composed music for stage plays and conducted bhajans, going round the streets of Papanasam. Hence he came to be known as Papanasam Sivan! In this town he befriended K. Subramaniam who would play a great role in his life soon. Looking for greener pastures, Papanasam Sivan migrated to Madras, the cultural capital of south India then and now. Here he found a Good Samaritan in a Mylapore lawyer, V. Sundaram Iyer. Mylapore had been the strong-hold of successful lawyers, mostly Brahmins, and is to this day a hectic hive of culture with an artistic ambience of its own! Sundaram Iyer became his friend, guide and patron. Sivan taught music to the lawyer s children, the strikingly handsome artistic teenager S. Rajam and his sister Jayalakshmi. The youngest, a lad of six watching it all and absorbing music by mental osmosis, would soon emerge as a multi-faceted genius of music and movies. His name was S. Balachandar, the latterday veena-wizard! Meanwhile, back at Kolhapur, V. Shantaram, one of the greatest filmmakers of India, then making his way in movies with the celebrated Prabhat Pictures, wrote to a Madrasbased movie magazine Sound and Shadow seeking its help to make a Tamil film using the sets, props and all of his Hindi film Sairandhri (1933, India s first film in color). The film had not done well and the company was trying to cut its losses by launching a Tamil film using the same re-usable sets and other materials. Soon the Mylapore lawyer, his children, and members of an amateur drama troupe boarded a train at Madras to Miraj (a railway junction) en route to Kolhapur. Accompanying them was Papanasam Sivan as music composer, blissfully unaware as the train chug-chugged its way, that he was on his way to fame and fortune! In Kolhapur, Sivan composed songs for Seetha Kalyanam. It was his first film and he had no knowledge of film music, orchestration and its nuances. But he knew music! He chose the tunes and melodiesof the songs of Saint Thyagaraja (Telugu) and Purandharadasa (Kannada) and wrote Tamil words using the same ragas, meters and melodies for the film tunes. And lo, the Tamil film tune was born! (To be continued) 20-ft breach in compound wall of TNHB quarters A 20-ft stretch of the compound wall of TNHB staff quarters on Dr. Ramasamy Salai, K. K. Nagar toppled over several months back. It has still not been rebuilt. The residents told Mambalam Times that the buildings too are not maintained properly. Most buildings have cracked walls and ceiling with seepage problems, they said. The breach in the compound wall is a major security risk and they have appealed to TNHB to rebuild it at the earliest.

S Rajan (40), a resident of Ashok Nagar, had lodged a complaint that his daughter s bicycle was missing. A special team headed by G. Hari Kumar (Asst. Commissioner of Police, Ashok Nagar) obtained security camera footage from various spots in the locality. Based on the footage, police arrested Senthil (39) of Ennore and his friend Akbar (35) of Manali. Police said the duo confessed to having stolen bicycles parked in schools, tuition centers and apartment complexes. They sold the bicycles with the help of two others. The gang had been into bicycle lifting for the past two months, police said. Since CCTV cameras are helping us in major cases, we have advised residents in the locality to install CCTV cameras in their houses. We have also increased visible policing in the area to deter anti-social elements from committing crimes, said Hari Kumar. The arrested men were remanded to judicial custody.
