Nagar on Aug. 7. Satish Kumar (33) of Madanandapuram, Porur and his wife Subha went to T. Nagar for shopping and bought a piece of jewellery. When the couple came out of the shop after purchasing the jewellery, Ponnarasi of Puducherry, who was keeping a watch on the couple, followed them and stole Subha s handbag. But she was caught by passers-by when she tried to escape and was handed over to police. FREE

All are welcome. 8 hurt as scaffolding falls on car, share auto Eight persons escaped with minor injuries after an iron scaffolding at a construction site in T. Nagar collapsed and fell on a Mercedes Benz car and a share auto passing by at around 7.30 p.m on Aug. 9. Traffic was disrupted for about half-an-hour on the busy stretch. According to police, Murali (35) was on his way to park the car in its owner s place in Vaidyaraman Street, T. Nagar when the mishap occurred. Caught unawares, Murali was trapped as the iron structure fell on the car, damaging the roof and the windshield. Murali managed to wriggle out of the vehicle to safety. A portion of the scaffolding also fell on a share auto with 6 passengers. All of them and the driver managed to get out of the vehicle. Passersby pushed the scaffolding away from the vehicles. According to police, no case was registered as no complaint was lodged. 4 Page 4 August 13-19, 2016 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Problems aplenty as flats used as hostels by commercial entities Sir, The owners of commercial complexes in T. Nagar are acquiring flats in residential complexes close by to accommodate their employees. A case in point is a residential apartment complex in Rangan Street, T. Nagar where a big commercial entity acquired some flats as they are close to its showroom. It has provided accommodation to 10 of its male employees in the flat, thereby converting the flat into a hostel. This has led to several problems like water shortage, sewage blocks and security concerns. After several complaints by the residents, the male employees were shifted out and the flat is now occupied by about 10 woman employees. But the main problem still remains. There is no guarantee that the commercial establishments will not use these flats for commercial activities in the future. While on this, we wonder how hostel accommodation can be provided without getting appropriate approval from the authorities. As per the Act passed by the Government of Tamilnadu in respect of providing accommodation in hostels, particularly for women, severe conditions are imposed. Safety and security are another issue as one does not know the background of those who are accommodated. Sometime ago, the police department sought details of the tenants staying in residential complexes. It is not known whether the department has obtained information in such cases. What security and safety do the residents have? We, therefore, request the authorities to take suitable steps to regulate the activity of converting residential flats into hostels. If no action is taken, the Residents Association should not hesitate to move legally to restore the fundamental rights of the residents. T. Nagar Residents Welfare Association, 30, Rangan Street, T. Motorists are put to risk due to the slippery condition of the road caused by the loose gravel covering the damaged surface. The loose dirt causes severe dust pollution every time a vehicle passes. During rains, the road gets further slippery due to the slush. I request the Corporation authorities to relay the road at the earliest for the convenience of the public. S. Similarly, for some residents of Vivekanandapuram 1 st Street, Aug. 2 was Adi Perukku as they started receiving Metrowater after a number of years. It was made possible thanks to the efforts of our area Association and Metrowater AE Mani and his team who took up the long-standing issue on a war footing and solved it. After the formation of our Residents Association, the officebearers raised the issue with Mani who took immediate action to restore water supply. K. The street has also been in a bad condition for several months. It has a number of old flats which are low lying. During rains, there is a good chance of water entering the compounds of these flats. So, the authorities should mill the road and relay it. To add to the woes, outsiders and autorickshaws drivers misuse the street to park their vehicles. Nagar has toppled and fallen into the canal affecting the free flow of water. Garbage that has accumulated around the toppled wall is creating a foul smell throughout the day. Street name boards misused for sticking posters The names boards of busy streets in the neighbourhood are being misused for sticking posters. Nagar was showing the wrong time when the photo was taken. A regular park visitor said that the clock stops intermittently and has not been functioning properly for more than a month. Nagar passed away on Aug. 9. She was 63, and had been a long time resident of T. Nagar. She had acted in more than 300 films in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. A trained dancer, she made her debut in the MGR-starrer Periya Idathu Penn in 1963 and went on to act with the big heroes of South Indian cinema of the 60s and 70s. Her last film was Kavalai Vendam released this year. Her dance sequence in the movie Adimai Penn (1969) with MGR and Jayalalitha catapulted her career, said director and actor Mano Bala. Ph: Advertise in the Classified Columns of Mambalam Times for immediate response. 2 days on, MTC stops ID card check for daily travel tickets The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has temporarily revoked the proposal seeking identity proof from commuters purchasing daily travel ticket. The move comes in the wake of commuters raising objections against the MTC s circular demanding identity proof from commuters buying daily travel tickets priced Rs. 50. A senior official of the MTC said that the transport body would revisit the proposal after getting feedback from commuters. He said that the move to demand identity proof was aimed at curbing misuse of the daily travel ticket, which was valid from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. MTC had issued the circular without any notice to the conductors to check the identity proof of commuters while issuing daily travel tickets. The proposal, launched on Aug. 7, caught the conductors unawares with passengers getting into arguments with them. Various trade unions of the MTC have come out against the proposal and said it was impractical. An office-bearer of CITU MTC branch said that daily travel tickets were issued by the conductors who were already burdened with several other tasks and this measure would only add to the pressure. Citing the time constraints faced by conductors during peak hours, he slammed the MTC management for its lack of foresight and for not seeking any feedback from trade unions before introducing such measures. He pointed out that passengers purchasing long-distance train tickets had to prove their identity only during their journey and not at the purchase point. Various trade unions of the MTC have come out against the proposal and said it was impractical.

8 Page 8 Panchu Arunachalam passes away Renowned script writer and producer K. N. Panchu Arunachalam passed away on Aug. 9. He was 76, and had been a long-time resident of Bhagirathi Ammal Street, T. Nagar He introduced music director Illayaraja in the movie Annakilli. Arunachalam was a voracious reader and produced big commercial hits in the 70s and 80s with actors like Rajinikanth and Kamal Hassan. He is credited with introducing folk themes in his movies and music in the 70 s. A call taxi driver set fire to his wife inside his car in Nandanam on the afternoon of Sunday, Aug. 7. The woman, who was with her two children inside the car, had doused herself with petrol to threaten her husband following an argument. The woman N. Prema (28) threw her two children out of the car window even as the fire engulfed her and gutted the car. She died the same evening in Kilpauk Medical College Hospital where she was admitted for treatment. She gave a dying declaration to the police and doctors that her husband Nagaraj, 33, set her on fire after she had doused herself with petrol. She told the police that had she not thrown her two children, Thisanth Raj (4) and Yashwanth Raj (2), through the open window onto the road, they too would have suffered burn injuries. August 13-19, 2016 Cabbie sets fire to wife inside car According to the police, Prema and the children were seated on the car s back seat when the couple entered into a heated argument. Prema found a bottle of petrol kept beneath the seat and poured its contents on her body. In a fit of rage Nagaraj stopped the car near Lotus Colony First Extension, opposite Boston School and lit a matchstick to set off the fire. He then left the car, abandoning Prema and their children. A team of police personnel led by Saidapet Asst. Commissioner of Police S. Thangaraj rescued the children and detained Nagaraj. Prema was immediately rushed to hospital.
