Nagar) has been conducting social awareness programs through the year under the banner Naal Thorum Nalathu Seivom. Recently there were programs under the banner Adhisaya Ragam Anantha Ragam, Kalangalil Avan Vasantham and Guruvae Saranam by Ramanan and Tholgal Namathu Thozhirsalai by Illaku. Apart from the awareness programs, Sri Krishna Sweets organized dinner for about 40 students of Kakkum Karangal in West Mambalam and lunch for about 40 senior citizens including destitute women in Thai Old Age Home in Mylapore under the banner Indru Pudhidai Piranthom and Iniyathu Iniyathu Ulagam. R. Varalaxmi, music teacher of Vidyodaya Higher Secondary School, T. Nagar, and organizer Udayadithian were honoured with Nallor Virudhu for their outstanding contribution to the field of music. Kavithalaya Krishnan was honoured with Therntha Rasigar Virudhu under the banner Kalangalil Avan Vasantham. Ramanan with Musician Ramesh Adhityan presented an entertaining program on Kavignar Kannadasan. Under the banner Guruvae Saranam, Ramanan spoke about his guru in the program. In association with Illaku, Sri Krishna Sweets organized Tholgal Namathu Thozhirsalai in which Suresh related to food industry was honoured with Arivunidhi Virudhu. Karthikeyan Imayavaramban gave a special address on opportunities in food industry. The program was co-ordinated by Vasuki Badri.

3 February 4-10, 2017 Open Metrowater pit blocks carriageway A pit and the earth dug from it by Metrowater workers are blocking half of the carriageway of Lakshmi Street, near its junction with Pushpavathi Ammal Street, West Mambalam. They are blocking the way for motorists and pedestrians. According to nearby residents, the pit was dug more than a fortnight ago to locate leakage in the underground pipeline. They said that though the work was completed a week back, the pit has still not been closed to attend special passport camps today In response to demand from the public the regional passport office will conduct special camps on Saturday, Feb. 4 in the Saligramam, Tambaram and Aminjikarai Passport Seva Kendras. According to a senior passport official, about 3000 persons have already registered to avail of services in the camps. He said that online registration for the camps started on Jan. 31. Those wanting to make use of the services can log on to register and obtain the application reference number (ARN) after making an online payment. Applicants will be given an appointment date and time and they should bring the required documents in original, along with a printout of the ARN. Only registered applicants will be allowed at the venue. After 4-year hiatus, TET on April 30 After a hiatus of four years, the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) will be conducted on April 30 in Tamil Nadu. School education minister K. Pandiarajan made the announcement on Feb. 2, following a Supreme Court ruling in November. The apex court had cleared the pending litigation on TET, allowing a 5% relaxation in the pass marks of reserved categories, upholding a state government order which would benefit minority category candidates for securing teaching jobs as well. The TET could not be conducted for four years owing to the pending cases which affected the opportunities for a significant number of existing and aspiring teachers in the state. Residents plea to repair hand pump Residents have appealed to Corporation officials to repair the damaged hand pump located at the junction of Kodambakkam Road and Nagathamman Koil Street, West Mambalam. They said that the pump has not been functional for more than two months. 4 Page 4 February 4-10, 2017 Tanker set ablaze for running over biker Residents of Nesapakkam, K. K. Nagar set ablaze a tanker in the afternoon of Jan. 28 after it fatally knocked down a 27- year-old biker. Police identified the deceased as P. Ramesh of Erikkarai Street, Ramapuram and said the sewage tanker rammed him from behind. Ramesh was dragged under the vehicle and crushed to death. Seeing the crowd gather, the driver abandoned the tanker and fled the spot. The infuriated residents then vent their ire on the vehicle, damaging the windshield before setting it ablaze. Police said the vehicle was taking sewage from the adjacent neighbourhood of Manapakkam to the treatment plant of Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) in Nesapakkam. According to an official of CMWSSB, private lorries are used to collect sewage from septic tanks in Ramapuram, Manapakkam and adjoining Students donate exhibition proceeds to needy organizations A sum of Rs. 3,000 collected by students during the craft exhibition held in Sri Tarachand Galada School (T. Nagar) on Jan. 28, was donated to needy organizations. According to Sita Ranjit (Principal), the handicrafts were handmade by the students using biodegradable materials. More than 25 handmade articles including candles, thread, leaf plates, embroidery work, hangings and other items were displayed. CBSE changes dates for some board exam papers Addressing students concerns about the schedule of some papers in the wake of polls in five states, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has changed the examination dates of a few subjects for both Stds. 10 and 12. The dates of three papers of Std. 10, Tamil language (006), Gurung (132) and National Cadet Corps (076), have been changed. The Std. 10 Tamil language paper has been postponed by eight days, from March 10 to March 18, while that of Gurung language has been advanced from March 23 to March 10. NCC exam has also been delayed by eight days and it will be held on March 23 instead of March 15. For Std. 12, the date of Physical Education paper has been changed from April 10 to April 12, and of Sociology exam from April 12 to April 20. Tree trunk blocks pavement in West CIT Nagar The trunk of a huge tree with roots, which toppled over during the cyclone last December, is still lying on the pavement outside the apartment complex in 5, 3 rd Cross Street, West CIT Nagar. Corporation workers cut and removed the branches of the fallen tree after the cyclone, but left behind its trunk. The underground live EB cables, which were lifted out of the ground by the roots of the uprooted tree, are also lying exposed on the pavement posing a risk of electrocution to unwary passersby. Nagar is riddled with traffic problems due erratic driving by bikers in its service lanes. As per norms, the service lanes are meant for vehicles coming from the road where a subway or a flyover is located. But the service lanes on both sides of the subway are used as 2-way streets for both entering and leaving the subway which is causing congestion at the entrance of the subway. This gets worse during peak hours and school opening and closing times. The subway, which was constructed in 1960, was widened from 2 meters to 5.6 meters last year and the floor height raised to prevent flooding during rains. Motorists living nearby also prefer to use the service lanes to go around it instead of using Mambalam High Road to enter the subway which adds to the problems. Motorists have appealed for posting of a constable at the entrance to the subway to regulate traffic and prevent motorists from using the service lanes to get access to the subway. Srinivasan was one of the founding fathers and pillars of Sri Ram Samaj. 5 February 4-10, 2017 Pedestrian plaza 2nd trial this month Chennai Corporation is planning to conduct a second trial run of the pedestrian plaza in T. Nagar in mid-february. The first trial was organized in November last year. A 700-metre stretch between Thanikachalam Road junction and Panagal Park will be made exclusive for pedestrians, and no private and public vehicles or hawking will be permitted from 9 a.m to 6 p.m. Traffic diversions, alternative parking areas and other arrangements will be similar to those made during the previous trial. A Corporation official told Mambalam Times, the difference is that last time the trial was for three hours, but this time it will be for the whole day to help us understand the pros and cons in one of the city s busiest areas. When Panagal Park was put to test last November, pedestrians and residents enjoyed the reclaiming of a public place, but traders downed shutters in protest saying their livelihood will be affected by the project. The Rs. 80-crore project was announced in 2012, which was to be funded by the World Bank, and the Corporation released a blueprint of the plan in But when the collaboration with World Bank was shelved after several procedural delays, the pedestrian plaza project was eventually included in Chennai s smart city proposal. LETTER TO THE EDITOR Appeal for traffic regulation at Kasi Viswanathar Koil junction Sir, Traffic needs to be regulated, especially during peak hours, at Kasi Viswanathar Koil junction, West Mambalam. Vehicles coming from Kuppiah Street along Madley Subway and going towards Ashok Nagar cross the junction and the entire stretch is congested during peak hours. To add to the problem, the road width is further reduced near the junction as the carriageway is blocked by roadside vendors and vehicles of devotees visiting the temple. It is a nightmare for pedestrians to cross the junction. They have to literally weave through the non-stop flow of vehicles. Senior citizens and students are the worst sufferers. During weekends and on festive occasions, the traffic issue is there throughout the day. I appeal to traffic police to post a constable, at least during peak hours, to regulate the traffic at the junction. Man held for torching autorickshaw Subramani of Ramapuram was arrested on Jan. 30 for setting fire to the parked autorickshaw of Nagaraj in West Mambalam on Jan. 29. On the night of Jan. 29, Nagaraj (43) had parked his autorickshaw outside his house in Umapathi Street, West Mambalam. He suddenly heard a lot of noise from outside and rushed out to see his auto going up in flames. He, along with his family members and neighbours, tried to douse the fire with water but the vehicle got badly damaged. He immediately filed a complaint with Ashok Nagar Police Station. A police team under Ashok Nagar Asst. Commissioner Hari Kumar, and led by inspector Ramesh, arrived at the spot. They saw a CCTV camera installed in the building opposite where the auto was parked. They checked the footage and saw a man set the auto on fire and flee from the spot. Though it was dark, his face was revealed in the headlight of a passing bike and he was immediately identified by Nagaraj as his friend s lover Subramani of Narasimha Perumal Koil Street, Ramapuram. Police arrested Subramani from his house. He told the police that he was angry with Nagaraj s increasing closeness to his lover and decided to destroy his autorickshaw, which was Nagaraj s only means of livelihood.
