NAGAR EDITION January 10-16, 2016 Bomb threat hoax leads to panic in schools FREE Following rumours of bomb threats in Chennai schools on Jan. 4, a number of parents crowded outside Sri RKM Sarada Vidyalaya (Usman Road, T. Nagar) to pick up their children during class hours at around 11 a.m. After repeated pressure from the parents, the school authorities allowed the students to go home. A teacher told Mambalam Times that the staff tried to convince the crowd that the bomb scare was a hoax, but the parents refused to take any risk and demanded that the authorities let out the students. It caused heavy traffic congestion and policemen had to be deployed to control the crowd. The scare was traced to a hoax call that claimed a bomb had been placed in a city school. According to the police, the first call was received at the city police control room claiming that a bomb had been planted in a school in Kelambakkam. This call was transferred to the Kancheepuram district police, said a police officer. Soon, rumours flew thick and fast through WhatsApp and other social media sites, leading to a perception that many schools were being targeted, with the result worried parents began to pick up their wards from schools. Police also took to WhatsApp and Facebook to counter the rumours and assure the citizens that the bomb threat was a hoax and there was no need to panic. 23,000 copies of this edition are delivered FREE every Sunday!

She was seen giving finishing touches to the decorative pots on sale for Pongal. She told Mambalam Times that there is a good demand for decorative pots, especially from corporate and residential associations, and groups for community celebrations. Nagar / Mambalam rises by 9 feet Rains aplenty in the last two months have replenished Chennai s shallow aquifers, with groundwater rising by upto 30 feet in the city. As per data collated by Metrowater Department from 145 observation wells in the city, the groundwater level has risen by between 6 feet and 30 feet across the city. In T. Nagar and Mambalam areas, the average water level has risen from the pre-monsoon level of 4.15 meters below ground level to 1.5 meters post rains which shows an increase in level by 2.65 meters (about 9 feet). He said that houses with open shallow wells will reap the benefits of the water table rise, whereas those with 100 feet borewells will not be able to tap into the fresh water brought by the rainfall. He further said that the shallow aquifers can be tapped through borewells by slotting pipes at feet below surface or by digging tube wells to draw the water. The highest recorded rise in water level of 10.7 meters (35 feet) is in Balaji Nagar, Ambattur and Saidapet 7.3 meters (24 feet). According to Sekar Raghavan (Director, Rain Center), the water quality has also improved as the rain water diluted the metals and other impurities below ground surface. He said that in most parts, the total dissolved solids count was less than 500 parts per million (ppm), which is the desirable limit for drinking. He further said that this big rise in water level has not been observed in densely populated areas like Ayanavaram, Tondiarpet and Thiruvottriyur due to lack of rainwater harvesting as the houses are lined up next to each other, leaving no space to sink recharge wells. to Rs. 600, she added.
