The road surface on the flyover is sloped to allow the rainwater to flow to the margins from where through pipe conduits the rainwater is collected and let into 10-foot-deep pits dug under the flyover. These pits are not deep enough for water absorption as the soil at 10 feet in most parts of Chennai including this neighbourhood is clayey. Soil tests done by Gammon India during construction of G.N. Chetty Road flyover showed that it is clayey soil up to 18 feet depth, so the pits need to be deeper than that for effective rain water harvesting. Sir, I wish to bring to your notice that Baroda Street Extension, which connects Thambiah Road and Lakshmi Narayana Street (West Mambalam), is in a bad condition. The surface which was concreted many years ago has worn out. On April 27, at around 10 p.m, when I was returning home in my car, I took the western end of Usman Road service lane which connects to Ramanathan Street. A group of hawkers near Annai Sathya Bazaar blocked my way and told me the lane was banned for vehicular traffic and I should take the circuitous route via Burkit Road- Dhandapanai Road-Pinjala Subramaniam Street- Rameswaram Road to reach Ramanathan Street. Since it was well past 10 p.m, and the hawkers were packing up, I requested them to let me through. But they stood their ground and were also rude in behavior. I immediately called the traffic police help-line who immediately sent a patrol to the spot. In the meantime I also alerted T. Nagar Residents Welfare Association. I explained to the patrol team the predicament of residents, who, for no fault of theirs, are forced to take circuitous route to reach their homes. Once the policemen intervened, the hawkers relented and allowed me to pass. The patrol team also asked me to lodge a complaint in this regard for them to take suitable action. I have also reported the issue to the local MLA. My questions are as follows: When the service lane on the eastern end of Usman Road is open to vehicular traffic, why is it blocked on the westernend? Are the hawkers who occupy the entire stretch of the service lane licensed by the Corporation? If the western-end lane is reserved exclusively for hawkers, during emergency, is a fire tender or an ambulance allowed enter the lane to reach the nearby streets or take the circuitous route to the distress of the ailing resident? I request the authorities to take immediate steps to regulate the hawkers on the western end of the service lane and open it to vehicular traffic. Mohammed Hussain, 19, Ramanathan Street, T.
