NAGAR EDITION To rein in skyrocketing vegetable prices in the open market and bring some relief to the consumers, Tamilnadu Government, on June 20, inaugurated 31 shops titled Farm- Fresh Consumer Outlets to sell vegetables in different parts of Chennai. Of the 31 outlets, 2 are mobile units (in Mylapore and Koyambedu) and the rest are attached to various cooperative societies. The initiative which was announced in the state budget Farm-Fresh outlets sell at less-than-market rates follows the recent launch of budget canteens. The Farm Fresh consumer outlet for the benefit of the residents of this neighbourhood has started functioning in a shed adjacent to the ration shop at the junction of Muthurangan Salai and Kamarajar Colony in T. Nagar. M. Saraswathi (in-charge of the outlet) told Mambalam Times that the shop is open from 8 a.m to a.m and Book bank lends free text books to engineering students Sumathi Vishal Jain Book Bank (2, Thiru Kumaran Apartments, Rameshwaram Road, T. Vegetables are sourced and sorted by Cooperative societies in these locations, he said. In the long run, procurement will be done directly from farmers by eliminating middlemen and this will also ensure fair price to farmers, he added. Vegetables are brought and stored at Kamadhenu Cooperative Society (Teynampet) which has a cold storage facility and distributed to the 31 outlets from there. Solar lamps worth Rs lakhs installed in single teacher schools Under the Single teacher school program of Swami Vivekananda Rural Development Society (T. Nagar), solar lamps worth Rs lakhs were installed in 100 single teacher schools in villages of Tiruvallur district this month. R. P. Krishnammachari (Executive Secretary) told Mambalam Times that the unscheduled and long power cuts in suburbs and villages are affecting the conducting of classes in these schools which usually takes place in the late evenings after regular school hours. Solar lamps would provide relief and help in conducting the classes in case of power cuts, he said. The project was started in 2006 with 30 schools. It has since grown to 570 and at present 17,000 children have benefitted from it, he said. He said that total cost of the solar lamp project is Rs.26 lakhs and he has appealed for donations.
