The police had received a tip that ganja was being peddled in areas like Triplicane, Marina and Ice House. Sources revealed the involvement of a gang that supplied the contraband to several junior artistes in the cine industry. Following this, police found one Moorthy alias Ganja Moorthy, a junior movie artiste, actively involved in the operation. A police team headed by Marina inspector G. Harikumar managed to locate Moorthy going on a bike on the afternoon of Oct. 25. Realizing that he was being trailed, Moorthy abandoned his bike in Sivarajapuram and escaped. After almost three hours, when no one came to claim the bike, police decided to change tact. They posed as fogging staff from the Corporation and started calling out the owner of the bike to remove it. When Moorthy came with his accomplice to remove the vehicle, police caught both of them. Moorthy told the police that he sourced the contraband from suppliers in Sivarajapuram. He had rented a house in West Mambalam for Rs. 3,000 where he packaged the ganja. Police raided the house and seized 5 kg of ganja.

3 Anbu Karangal appeals for donation to celebrate Deepavali Anbu Karangal (an orphanage and old age home at 1/216, Vivekanander Street, Kottivakkam) has appealed for donations to celebrate Deepavali on Nov. 10. M.R.S. Lakshmi (founder) said that the home has 100 residents of which 50 are senior citizens and the rest are studying in schools and colleges. N. Chetty Road (T. Nagar). They pose a hazard to motorists. Snake in Kamaraj Colony escapes before fire personnel arrive Suresh (a resident of Kamaraj Colony, T. Nagar) found a 5-foot long snake in his house at around 10 a.m on Oct. 26. He immediately rushed out, locked the house and called the Fire Department. In spite of a deep search, the Fire Department staff could not locate the snake in the house or anywhere nearby. A large crowd had gathered to watch the search operation. The residents said a vacant and ill-maintained plot with overgrowth of bushes next to the colony is a convenient place for snakes to take refuge. Garments made by prisoners to be sold from van near Panagal Park The prison department is planning to set up a mobile showroom near Panagal Park to sell garments made by the inmates of Puzhal Jail. The prison officials have modified a van that will be put to use for selling the garments by the end of this week. On sale will be about 500 shirts, shorts and T- shirts of all sizes. Assistant jailer V. Bharathi will supervise the sales along with G. Arun who teaches prisoners tailoring. Krishnamaachari (Managing Director, Tex Bio Science, and resident of Ashok Nagar) donated Rs. 75,000 towards the medical expenses of Arvind (a student of Vaideegam at Sri Sankara Gurukulam Acharya Vidya Peetam, Tanjore District) last week. Arvind, who hails from a poor family, had to undergo an expensive surgery after he slipped and fell into an open trench and broke his spine recently. He is undergoing treatment in a private hospital. His contact numbers are and Couple held for cheating chit fund investors A couple Gunasekaran and Mayil alias Indumathi, residents of Kaliyamman Koil Street, Porur, were arrested for cheating the public to the tune of Rs. 80 lakhs by Crime Branch Police on Oct. 26. Based on the complaint made by N. Selvaraj (resident of Muthalamman Koil Street, West Mambalam) and his neighbours, police arrested Gunasekaran and his wife Mayal on Oct. 26 for cheating investors who invested in the Deepavali chit fund run by them. The couple defaulted on payments and absconded when the investors started to put pressure for repayment. Police formed a special team to nab the couple. They were remanded to judicial custody. Water filled trench on South Boag Road poses danger A 10-foot deep circular pit dug on South Boag Road, (opposite Corporation Division Office 117, T. Nagar) is filled with rainwater and poses a danger to motorists and pedestrians. Dried palm tree fronds are kept around the pit to warn road users. An official said that the pit was dug for harvesting rainwater and will soon be closed with a slab. Barricades placed to prevent parking on Muthurangan Salai Barricades have been placed permanently on the road margin of Muthurangan Salai, T. Nagar, since last week to prevent parking of vehicles. Calling volunteers for free service in Tirumala Sevas (Pallavaram) sends volunteers for a week-long service to pilgrims in Tirumala starting on Mondays and ending on Sundays. Nagar). Yes, these roads have been cleared of the decades-long encroachment both by the vendors/ hawkers and also the complex owners. To some extent, the encroachments have also been cleared on the services lanes of Usman Road. With the encroachments gone, one can really appreciate the width of these roads. I hope it is not a temporary measure to ensure hassle-free movement of shoppers for the oncoming Deepavali season but a permanent measure to rid T. Nagar streets of encroachments. V.S. I drive a converted 2-wheeler and have to cross Duraisamy Subway to reach my workplace. The subway has been in a bad condition for a number of years. The road is full of potholes and it gets worse during rains. The subway walls have developed several cracks from which water leaks during monsoon thereby flooding the subway.
