4 Page 4 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY N. C. VASANTHAKOKILAM - 3 Venuganam had in its cast, besides NCV, noted artistes like K. Sarangapani, V. V. Satagopan (the well known Carnatic musician who enjoyed movie stardom for a brief while), Kulathu Mani, A. Sakunthala (later Mrs. P. U. Chinnappa), S. M. Subbaiah and M. V. Mani. It was made at the Central Studios, Coimbatore which played a significant role in the history of Indian cinema. Vasanthakokilam sang songs in ragasmanirangu, Hindustani Naattai, Senjurutti, Behag, Kapi and Jonpuri(the song, its lyrics and tune were of the famous Eppo varuvaaro, duly adapted to suit the film!) With her patron and life-guide Sachi losing his hold in the movie world and not getting films to make, Vasanthakokilam realized that she would not get heroine roles any more. Besides, her career as performing Carnatic musician began to take off and Sachi concentrated in promoting her as a competitor to MS. Whatever MS did, NCV too did. When MS cut discs of Hindi songs, which was in fashion during the 1940 s, NCV followed suit! While the music was tunefully melodious, her accent and pronunciation of Hindi were atrocious! However her discs of Carnatic music sold well and spread her fame. However she did not give up the movies. By now she was well into her thirties. Generally Brahmin and other Indian middle class women of that era did not bother to take care of their figure and form, and NCV was no exception! The familiar middle agespread began to creep over her! Sachi realized that now she could only play supporting roles. One such role came to her in that memorable movie of 1944, Haridas featuring the first superstar of South Indian cinema, singing star, and icon of early Tamil cinema, a legend in his lifetime, M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar and the oomph girl her day, T. R. Rajakumari in lead roles. NCV was cast as MKT s wife. Produced by the well known producers of s, the Madurai-based Rayal Talkie Distributors, the film was directed by the multi-lingual filmmaker Sundar Rao Nadkarni and shot at Central Studios, Coimbatore. Others in the cast included N. S. Krishnan, T. A. Mathuram, Pulimoottai Ramaswamy, T. E. Krishnamachari and M. M. Radhabai. A folk myth tale of sinner-turning-saint, Haridas was a musical extravaganza and became a super hit. Indeed, to this day, it holds the unbroken record for the longest run at a single cinema theater by a non-hindi, regional language film in India. It ran for 116 weeks at Broadway Cinema, Madras, and witnessed three consecutive Deepawali festivals, ! The reason was its music. The lyrics and music were by the legendary icon of Carnatic music and cult figure, Papanasam Sivan, and the orchestration and background music score were done by the noted film composer G. Ramanathan and also S. M. Subbaiah Naidu. Many songs of Haridas became hits. NCV sang songs in Bilahari ( Kadhiravan Udayam kandu, a popular one), Suddha Dhanyasi ( Kannaa Vaa Mani Vannaa Vaa, also a popular song), a Hindi film-based tune( Enadhu manam thulli ) and Mayamaalava Gowla ( Enathuyir naathan ). She also sang a duet with MKT (Vasantha Rudhu Mana Mohaname) which fell rather flat! In 1940 M. S. Subbulakshmi created sensation and news when she played the male role of the musical sage Narada in Y. V. Rao s Savitri. The popular Hindi and Marathi film star of her days, Shanta Apte, played the heroine who spoke and sang in Tamil with her voice with no play-back singer and dubbing - a fact that would stun many today when few stars speak and sing in their own voices even in their mother-tongue! After MS set the ball rolling, Vasanthakokilam too donned the male garb of Narada in Jupiter Pictures Valmiki (1946). Not many are aware that M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar was the first choice to play the hero in this movie but regretfully he was arrested in December 1944 for his alleged involvement in the sensational Lakshmikantham murder case which shook not only south India but also the rest of the nation and other lands during the late 1944-early He was in prison for thirty months and came out only in April, Valmiki had the Mysore State-based Carnatic musician and actor C. Honnappa Bhagavathar (who replaced MKT Bhagavathar) as hero, with T. R. Rajakumari, T. S. Balaiah, U. R. Jeevaratnam, Kali N. Ratnam, C. T. Rajakantham and Nott Annaji Rao in the cast. Directed by Sundar Rao Nadkarni, the film did fairly well at the boxoffice. NCV as Naradar sang many songs in this film - Jaya Jaya bhuvana pathey, Sundaranandaa vaikunttaaa, Poi thavazhum (Simhendramadhyamam and Kambodhi) and Puvi meedhu(sankarabharanam). All the songs became popular. (Nott Annaji Rao was a well known actor of his day. His son was the famed singing guru and cult figure Haridas Giri. He told this writer that his father named him after the hit film of 1944!) 1947 witnessed another film Kundalakesi with NCV which is scarcely remembered today. Based on a Tamil classic it was written by the first star writer of Tamil Cinema, Elangovan and directed by Bomman Irani. It had C. Honnappa Bhagavathar, G. Pattu Iyer, G. M. Basheer, T. R. Ramachandran, M. R. Swaminathan, N. C. Vasanthakokilam, K. L. V. Vasantha and others in the cast. Papanasam Sivan wrote the songs and also set the tunes while G. Ramanathan and S. M. Subbaiah Naidu took care of the musical score and orchestration. NCV sang songs in Hindolam and Shanmughapriya but those did not create any impact and were forgotten as fast as the film itself did! Nagar) has donated Rs.50,000 to Gurupriya Vision Research Foundation (a wing of Radhatri Nethralaya, T. Nagar) for its Balanethra project under which free cataract/eye correction surgeries are performed on infants born to parents from poor and economically weak background. Lakshmi made the donation in memory of her parents. Roads not relaid properly in West CIT Nagar A number of roads in West CIT Nagar were re-laid with concrete recently. The new road surface, which is almost 4 inches thick, has not been laid properly. The sides of the roads have not been tapered causing problems for residents who find it difficult to take out their vehicles. 2-wheeler riders are likely to lose their balance while riding close to the road edges. Two on bike snatch 5-sovereign chain from woman A 32-year-old woman, who was on an evening walk with her child, was relived of her 5- sovereign chain by a two persons on motorbike in K. K. Nagar on the evening of March 21. Police said Chithra, a resident of Vanniyar Street, K. K. Nagar, had gone to a park in 11 th sector for an evening stroll. When she was nearing the park, two persons on a motorbike came close to her and snatched her gold chain. A case registered in K. K. Nagar Police Station is under investigation. Signboard cautions about trench A hotelier has placed a signboard in front of a trench to warn road users on P. V. Rajamannar Salai (K. K. Nagar). The 2 feet wide and 4 feet deep trench has been dug by Metrowater workers to carry out repairs to the underground pipeline. Shivpprasadh Amitabh Bachchan (popularly called AB) has paid glowing tributes to veteran director S. Ramanathan in his latest blog. Ramanathan, who had passed away in 2013, was a resident of Giri Road, T. Nagar for more than four decades. He had directed the movie Madras to Pondicherry which was remade as Bombay to Goa in Hindi with Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role. V. Koil Street, West Mambalam including mine got damaged. TNEB staff at that time drew a single phase connection from a nearby junction box to provide temporary power connection to the two houses. But till date, the damaged cable has not been repaired or replaced. In spite of repeated complaints to the fuse call office and personal requests made to the AE, no action has been taken to repair the cable even after a lapse of three months. A complaint registered in Amma Call Centre has also not evoked any response. Due to single phase supply, the residents are not able to use high power appliances like geyser, microwave and air-conditioner. Nagar are acquiring flats in residential apartments close-by to accommodate their employees. A case in point is a residential apartment complex in Rangan Street, T. Nagar where a big commercial entity acquired some flats as they are close to its showroom.it has provided accommodation to 10 of its male employees in the flat, thereby converting the flat into a hostel. This has led to several problems like water shortage, sewage blocks and security concerns. After several complaints by the residents, the male employees were shifted out and the flat is now occupied by about 10 woman employees. But the main problem still remains. The practice of letting out flats to commercial entities for the greed of higher rent defeats the very purpose of the concept of apartment living. There is no guarantee that these commercial establishments will not use these flats for commercial activities in the future. While on this, we wonder how hostel accommodation can be provided without getting appropriate approval from the authorities. As per the Act passed by the Government of Tamilnadu in respect of providing accommodation in hostels particularly for women, severe conditions are imposed. Safety and security are another issue as one does not know the background of those who are accommodated. Sometime ago, the police department sought details of the tenants staying in residential complexes. It is not known whether the department has obtained information in such cases. What security and safety do the residents have? We, therefore, request the authorities to take suitable steps to regulate the activity of converting residential flats into hostels. If no action is taken, the Residents Association should not hesitate to move legally to restore the fundamental rights of the residents. - T.
