I was cheated of Rs. 3,500 by a young girl who posed as a Indane Gas Agency representative on Jan. 5 at around 9 a.m and sold me spurious stove accessories. She said that Indane has launched a new doorto-door scheme for senior citizens in Chennai on stove accessories like Gas burner protection cover and gas saver with warranty. She also produced a gas agency receipt in the name of Indane along with registration number and contact number to prove her authenticity. I purchased the accessories in good faith from her, After using the accessories for a few hours, I realized they were of poor quality. When I later contacted the agency through the contact number printed on the receipt, they replied that there is no such scheme from Indane or any other gas agency. I immediately realised that I had been duped. I am also planning to file a police complaint as the girl s photo has been captured by the CCTV camera in the building. I wish to warn readers (especially senior citizens living alone) of Mambalam Times to be wary of such sales representatives. Gyanchand Galada, Venkatanarayana Road, T. Nagar Sir, A condemned autorickshaw has remained parked for the past five months on the road margin in front of Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya (R. R. At night, anti-social elements use the autorickshaw for nefarious activities. Often empty liquor bottles and garbage including plastic waste can be seen strewn around the auto and near the school entrance. Several complaints have been made to the Kumaran Nagar Police Station and also to the Commissioner of Police. But no action has been taken so far to remove the autorickshaw. Damaged drain blocks entrance Sir, We are residents of Maple Woods Apartments, K. K. Nagar. The stormwater drain in front of our complex is badly damaged. The slabs covering the drain were broken and removed during the recent floods to reduce inundation. It has not been closed since then and the open drain, which poses a danger, is blocking the entrance to the main gate of the complex. Nagar & Mambalam Vol. 21, No rd Issue : Bomb threat hoax leads to panic in schools Following rumours of bomb threats in Chennai schools on Jan. 4, a number of parents crowded outside Sri RKM Sarada Vidyalaya (Usman Road, T. Nagar) to pick up their children during class hours at around 11 a.m. After repeated pressure from the parents, the school authorities allowed the students to go home. A teacher told Mambalam Times that the staff tried to convince the crowd that the bomb scare was a hoax, but the parents refused to take any risk and demanded that the authorities let out the students. It caused heavy traffic congestion and policemen had to be deployed to control the crowd. The scare was traced to a hoax call that claimed a bomb had been placed in a city school. According to the police, the first call was received at the city police control room claiming that a bomb had been planted in a school in Kelambakkam. Continued on Page 2 FREE

Nagar) are in danger of toppling over as a large portion of their main roots were cut by Corporation workers while breaking the slabs of the stormwater drain. Water table in T. Nagar / Mambalam rises by 9 feet Rains aplenty in the last two months have replenished Chennai s shallow aquifers, with groundwater rising by upto 30 feet in the city. As per data collated by Metrowater Department from 145 observation wells in the city, the groundwater level has risen by between 6 feet and 30 feet across the city. In T. Nagar and Mambalam areas, the average water level has risen from the pre-monsoon level of 4.15 meters below ground level to 1.5 meters post rains which shows an increase in level by 2.65 meters (about 9 feet). He said that houses with open shallow wells will reap the benefits of the water table rise, whereas those with 100 feet borewells will not be able to tap into the fresh water brought by the rainfall. He further said that the shallow aquifers can be tapped through borewells by slotting pipes at feet below surface or by digging tube wells to draw the water. The highest recorded rise in water level of 10.7 meters (35 feet) is in Balaji Nagar, Ambattur and Saidapet 7.3 meters (24 feet). Raghavan said that the water quality has also improved as the rain water diluted the metals and other impurities below ground surface. He said that in most parts, the total dissolved solids count was less than 500 parts per million (ppm), which is the desirable limit for drinking. He further said that this big rise in water level has not been observed in densely populated areas like Ayanavaram, Tondiarpet and Thiruvottriyur due to lack of rainwater harvesting as the houses are lined up next to each other, leaving no space to sink recharge wells. Nagar) caved in at around 1.30 p.m on Jan, 6 when a loaded tanker contracted to Metrowater was moving on the stretch. Four championship shows along with obedience, agility, field, Gundog, Schutzhund (a special test for German Shepherd breed dogs) and four other specialty shows will be held.
