There will be taken in a procession at 6 p.m. LETTER TO THE EDITOR Chennai needs a federation of flat owners associations Sir, The recent collapse of a multi storeyed apartment complex under construction in Mugalivakam is a glaring example of the real estate affairs of the city and the State Govt. apathy in regulating the same. With ever increasing aspiration of citizens from all walks of life to own flats, building promoters are queuing up by the mile with tall promises and exotic offers. The buyers are facing untold difficulties like one-sided agreements, astronomical prices, unprecedented delays in delivery, retaining of full maintenance against the will of the flat owners, sale of parking and common areas and bungling of FSI. There are umpteen cases of unauthorized/ unapproved constructions wherein the buyer after ownership is forced to face the wrath of the govt. officials and pay huge sums in regularizing them. There are already thousands of flats in Chennai having their own associations (either registered or unregistered). Time has now come to form a federation to unite them all under one umbrella to take effective action for the safety of the flat owners/buyers, take their issues to the concerned civic authorities and to get the undertakings of the promoters fulfilled within a reasonable time-limit. I am prepared to start this movement of promoting such a federation. I appeal to the senior members of Resident Associations to contact me in this regard. D.
