Nagar gave a barren look as the public was glued to the TV as the counting of votes for declaration of the election results began at 8 a.m on May 16 and the initial trends started to pour in by 10 a.m. This picture was taken at the junction of Madley Road and Usman Road at a.m. Man robs old woman using toy gun, gets caught by neighbours 25-year-old Saravanan who looted gold jewellery worth Rs lakhs and Rs. 2 lakhs in cash from the house of Kasi Manickam (a DMK functionary) in MGR Nagar on May 14 was caught by the neighbours before he could escape from the house. He was handed over to Teynampet Police where a case was pending against him. Savaranan, who was earlier employed as car driver in Kasi s house, entered the house knowing that Manickam s mother was alone. He threatened her with a toy gun and grabbed the cupboard keys, tossed the jewellery and cash from the cupboard into a bag and ran out. The mother screamed and alerted the neighbours. Before Saravana could scale the compound wall and decamp, he was caught and overpowered. Police said that in January, when Saravanan was employed with Kasi, he absconded with Rs. 10 lakhs cash kept in a bag in the car when the family was shopping in T. Nagar. The abandoned car was later found in Tambaram. Teynampet Police recovered the car and launched an unsuccessful manhunt for Saravanan. On interrogation, Saravanan said that he had escaped to Goa and had splurged the entire money by living lavishly and on drinks and gambling. When the money got exhausted, he wanted to try his luck again in Kasi s house and had been keeping a vigil on the house to look for an opportune moment. Highway gang trapped through stolen SIM card After tracing them through a stolen SIM card, police arrested Rajiv (29) of Ashok Nagar and Karthikeyan (25) of West Mambalam along with four more of their accomplices (Krishnamoorthy, Marisamy, Babu and Ashok Kumar) on May 10 for abducting a lorry driver and robbing goods worth Rs. 1 crore from his truck when it was parked near Sunguvarchatram (on Chennai Bangalore highway) on its way to Mysore on May 3. They attacked, handcuffed and blindfolded the driver Shoaib Akthar and put him in the back of the lorry and drove it away. It was loaded with auto parts and iron rods worth Rs. 1 crore. They dumped him on the roadside near Oragadam, transferred the goods to another truck and abandoned the lorry on Urapakkam Service Road. Shoaib was rescued by a passerby. Police had little to go by except Akhtar s description of the kidnappers and the fact that the gang also took his SIM card. Police then put the number on tracking which brought them to the doorsteps of a man named Babu. Police arrested Babu who on interrogation revealed that two of his aides Krishnamoorthy and Rajiv had hatched the plan to hijack the vehicle based on a tip that it had valuable consignment. Police made Babu speak to Krishnamoorthy and tell him that he had found a customer for the stolen goods. Krishnamoorthy was asked to come to a spot near Meenambakkam to discuss the deal. He was arrested when he got there. On the basis of the information provided by him, police seized the goods that the gang had stored in a godown in Chrompet and also located and arrested the other accomplices in the crime. Krishnamoorthy was found to be a history-sheeter and had been involved in similar cases in Sriperumbudur. MTC directed to pay Rs. 9.5 lakhs relief to injured commuter The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal directed MTC to pay a compensation of Rs. 9.5 lakhs to A. Murugan (a labour-hand residing in K.K Nagar) who sustained severe injuries in an accident while traveling in a MTC bus on June 6, Murugan s counsel had submitted to the tribunal that the driver of the MTC bus was in the wrong as he was speeding and was on the wrong side of the road when it hit the lorry coming from the opposite side and MTC was hence statutorily liable to pay compensation. MTC had countered saying that it was the lorry driver s mistake and Murugan s claims were wrong. The lorry had fled from the accident spot and could not be traced. The police too had registered a case of rash and negligent driving against the lorry driver. As Murugan did not take any steps to find the driver, owner and insurer of the lorry, MTC was not responsible for payment of compensation. In his orders, Judge J. Chandran said that Murugan was a bonafide passenger who sustained injuries without any negligence on his part in the accident. Though the FIR had been registered against the unknown lorry driver, there were no witnesses to prove the bus driver wasn t responsible. It then held the bus driver guilty of rash and negligent driving.

Teen from Mambalam swims 19 km in sea off Mumbai 15-year-old Aditya Bharadwaj (past resident of Thambiah Road, West Mambalam) conquered the high seas and was the first teenager to swim breaststroke a distance of 19 km in 4 hours and 10 minutes, from Kasa Island to Elephanta Caves (near Mumbai). He said that the first two hours of the swim was the most challenging as he had to face strong winds and currents, which put more burden during breaststroke swimming as the entire body has to work to propel him ahead. The feat was accomplished by Aditya under the joint guidance of the Navi Mumbai Sports Association (NMSA) and Open Water Sea Swimming Club. He underwent training under Sanket Sawant (coach, NMSA) and international swimmer Santosh Patil. The training schedule apart from swimming included endurance workouts like kicking, drill sets and cycling for 4 hours everyday, he said. MTC buses coming from Kodambakkam ply on the Y- shaped flyover to go towards Valluvar Kottam. Cab driver wanted in dietician s murder arrested Sitaram (25), a cab driver and the prime suspect in the murder of 25-year-old Rekha (resident of Annai Sathya Nagar, Nesappakkam) last week, was arrested by a special police team on May 15. They traced him down in Pondicherry where he was hiding in a friend s house. On interrogation, he confessed to the murder.he told the police that Rekha was a BPO employee and he used to drive her to work and back. He had been infatuated by her and had become depressed when she turned down his proposals. She later left her job and joined a gym in Koyambedu as a dietician. When Rekha got married, he became jealous and angry and plotted to kill her. He kept a tab on her and found an opportune moment when she was alone and kidnapped her in his cab.
