NAGAR EDITION Vol. 15, No. 10 September 11-17, 2016 Child crushed under wheels as mother jumps off moving train An 18-month-old girl child died and her mother suffered multiple fractures in her leg while trying to get off a moving train in Mambalam Station on Sept. 6. The accident occurred at around 5.40 a.m when Lakshmi (32), with her daughter Ega Shree in her arms, and her husband Sundaravelan were returning to Chennai by Mannai Express after attending a marriage in Kumbakonam. Sundaravelan, a professor in a city college, told the police that they originally planned to get off at Egmore Station. However, as the train halted at Mambalam Station, a co-passenger advised them to get off there, saying it would be easier to go to their residence in Ashok Nagar. Sundaravelan told his wife about the change in plan and they decided to get off at Mambalam. By then the train had started moving and was gathering speed. Sundaravelan managed to get down safely, but Lakshmi, who was carrying the child, landed awkwardly on the platform and lost her balance. In the fall, she lost grip of her daughter who slipped into the gap between the running train and tracks and died instantly. A distraught Lakshmi got to her feet and tried to rush to her daughter s rescue but got trapped in the gap and broke her leg in a few places. On receiving the information, a team of personnel from the Egmore Government Railway Police rushed to the place and recovered the child s body from the tracks and sent it to the Rajiv Gandhi Government Medical College Hospital for autopsy. Lakshmi is undergoing treatment in Stanley Medical College and Hospital. Based on a complaint from Sundaravelan, GRP police have registered a case. R. Subburaman. The film had fifteen songs, out of which GNB sang seven in addition to a couple of duets. Those had, in fact, been composed for M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar and some had even been recorded by him, but the recording exercise was again gone through with GNB. But somehow the music did not jell and created no impact. And then GNB bade goodbye to movies. Even though he was more handsome than most heroes of his day and sang well, he did not make an impact as a film actor. He took direction well and, as we went along, he was improving as an actor. Actually I expected him to become a successful hero but somehow it did not seem to happen, Ellis R. Dungan, who directed him in Sakunthalai, told this writer in a long chat in A major drawback of GNB was his predominantly Brahmin accent which he could not shed in spite of his best efforts. With his looks, charm, singing talents and skills, GNB could have gone a long way in Tamil Cinema but sadly he did not. Well, that s the way the ball bounces in movies, and in life! MLV - A HOMAGE Madras Lalithangi Vasanthakumari was born in 1928 into a musical family. Her mother was Lalithangi, a noted musician of her day and father was Ayyasami Iyer, a scholar and teacher of music. Thus music was in her genes and she began to learn classical Carnatic music even as a tiny tot. As an attractive lass she accompanied her mother in her concerts singing seconds ( pinpaattu ). In her teens she became the disciple of GNB and it was a turning point in her life and career. She imbibed all that was best in her guru s musical genius and added her own to the inheritance. (During the early 1990s, this writer made a two-part (60- minute) TV Serial on MLV, Thiraivaanil Oru Isai Thenee! telecast by Doordarshan Kendra, Madras. It was very well received and won much praise. In it, R. Krishnamurthy (her husband) and Srividya (her daughter) spoke on camera about MLV with much emotion. V. N. Sundaram, P. Leela and Tamil film star G. Sakunthala (for whom MLV sang in Ellis R. Dungan s hit and cult film Manthiri Kumari ) also spoke recalling their association with MLV.) MLV was to have acted in M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar s come back - movie Raja Mukthi (1948) which was made in Poona (now Pune). After Bhagavathar was arrested in December 1944 for his alleged involvement in the sensational and historic Lakshmikantham murder case, he underwent a 30- month term in prison and was acquitted as Not guilty in April Then he promoted his own film unit Narendra Pictures and the first film was Raja Mukthi. MLV went to Poona for acting but, for many reasons, she chose not to act and instead she took her bow as playback singer in this film. She sang duets with Bhagavathar and the songs became popular while the movie itself flopped in spite of its prophetic title. MLV sang Kulakodi thazhaikka (raga Ramapriya); Enna Aanandham (Simhendramadhyamam, duet with MKT); Santoshamaai anbar (duet with P. Bhanumathi); Araro (Yamankalyani) and Ingum angum (Madhyamaavathi, duet with MKT). The lyrics were by Papanasam Sivan and C. R. Subburaman was the music director. Unusually in this film there was a song trainer. That was Alathur Sivasubramaniam, one of the two famous Alathur Brothers. The director was the well-known filmmaker of s, Raja Chandrasekhar who had directed MKT in the hit film Ashok Kumar (1941). One of the immortal classical Carnatic music-based melodies of Tamil cinema is the evergreen hit song Ellaam inba mayam, sung as a duet by MLV and P. Leela in the film Manamagal ( 1951) produced and directed by the cult-figure and comedian supremo, N. S. Krishnan. The civic body is looking at tapping into private property to lease out parking space. According to a Corporation official, if the proposal gets approval, it could save the additional expense of building and maintaining multi-level parking systems and, at the same time, increase the revenue. As per the proposal, Corporation plans to rope in private owners of shopping malls, apartment complexes and vacant lands for vehicle parking for a fee. It is also looking at gated communities to see if the parking lots there can be rented during the day as most residents use the lots for parking only at night. According to an official, 65 of the 143 parking lots owned by Chennai Corporation have been taken over by CMRL for Metrorail work. The revenue has since dropped from Rs. 1.2 crores to Rs. 50 lakhs and has also led to shrinkage of parking space in the city, he said.

It is not only an eyesore but is also blocking the carriageway. Will the Corporation authorities arrange to remove it from the spot? R. Selvi, Lake View Road, West Mambalam Storm water drains full of sewage water Sir, Apart from the civic woes which haunt the residents every now and then, they now have to bear the brunt of yet another health related problem. Many of the storm water drains in the neighbouhood have become conduits for sewage water. Recently, in Rangan Street, T. Nagar there was overflow of sewage water on the street. When the Corporation officials said that it was due to a leak in the Metrowater sewer line, the residents felt that it could be due to diverting of waste water into the storm water drains by commercial establishments and shopping complexes. More than 20 lorry loads of sewage water were lifted from the drain. The officials are unable to fix the problem and the drain still contains sewage water. If the problem continues, there is a likelihood of the contamination of metrowater supplied through the pipeline. Many such storm water drains in the neighbourhood are filled with sewage water. If the Corporation s claim of leakage in sewage line as the cause for it is accepted, then it means that there is something seriously wrong with the Metrowater sewer lines. They are probably aged or do not have the capacity to meet the increasing demand of the overgrowing population in the city. Frequent dumping of waste/plastic bags, leftover food waste and other such items in the storm water drains by commercial establishments is also one of the primary causes for the blocks. Further, with a number of flats being rented out as hostels to big showrooms to accommodate upto 15 to 20 staff members, it causes a severe strain on the existing sanitation facilities. With the monsoon approaching, unless the Corporation takes steps on a war footing to fix the problems, the storm water drains will not be able to carry the rain water resulting in inundation of streets. Nagar Irregular garbage clearance in Motilal Street Sir, On the evening of Sept. 9, a resident of Motilal Street, T. Nagar, called a conservancy inspector of the Ward 136, Zone 10 on the inspector s official mobile phone to inform about the non-clearance of garbage for several days from the bins kept on the street. The lady inspector spoke rudely to the resident for disturbing her after office hours. It must be understood that it is not the intention of the public to disturb Corporation officials after office hours, as many a time calls are not being attended even during working hours. In the instant case, the resident was only trying to tell the official about the problems faced by the residents due to non-clearing of garbage by employees of the conservancy contractor Ramkay. Instead of giving a dressing down to the caller, she could have simply heard the complaint and said politely that the matter will be looked into the next day. The very idea of providing official mobile phones for Corporation officials is defeated if they display such a rude attitude. If the officials do not want to entertain calls after office hours, they can as well switch off the phones. But this again is not the intention of the Corporation to improve its services. Nagar No inlets for storm water drains in Bharathidasan Colony Sir, The Corporation has recently constructed storm water drains (SWD) in Bharathidasan Colony Main Road and the interconnecting 5 th, 6 th and 7 th Streets. As the SWDs have not been provided with inlets, during rains there is water stagnation on the road as its level is lower than that of the slabs covering the drains. We fear that during heavy rains, the water may enter the ground floor of houses as some of them are below the road surface. As the monsoon is fast approaching, we appeal to the Corporation officials to provide inlets in the drains for the rain water to flow into them and not flood the streets and houses. Concrete surface for Aranganathan subway Chennai Corporation has started the work of repairing the carriageway of Aranganathan subway that connects CIT Nagar with West Mambalam and Saidapet. The surface that was badly damaged and ridden with potholes has been completely milled. Work has begun to relay the surface with concrete and measures are also under way to prevent water stagnation in the subway. To avoid closure of traffic, relaying work has been taken up on one half of the subway. According to an official, the storm water drains that open into the subway will be closed to prevent flooding during heavy rains. He said that a pipe has also been laid to divert water from the drain to a nearby canal. The work is expected to be completed before the end of the month. Wins first prize in State-level spell bee contest Aswath Govindarajan, a resident of Ashok Nagar, came first in the final of the Tamilnadu State-level Wiz National Spell Bee contest in the age category conducted in Tiruppur recently. 50 students competed in his age category.
