A cultural show was also held to entertain the beneficiaries. Abandoned tricycle blocks pavement An abandoned garbage tricycle has been lying upside down on the pavement outside 25/11, Rajagopalan Street, West Mambalam for several weeks. It is blocking the way for pedestrians. Corpn. rebuilds damaged wall of temple tank Reconstruction of the damaged portion of the wall around Kothandaramar Temple tank adjoining Kittu Park, Elliamman Koil Street, West Mambalam is in progress. The contractor told Mambalam Times that the work will be completed in a month. An excavator was employed to pull down the damaged section of the wall and level the surface for laying the foundation. A 30-feet portion of the wall had collapsed last November. New health mix on sale S. She can be contacted in / Transformers replaced with RMUs The transformers in Subba Street, West Mambalam were replaced with Ring Main Units (RMU) on Nov. 2. The work was supervised by senior TNEB officials. According to an engineer at the site, RMU is a superior and safer technology to distribute power. Unlike transformers, which have to be erected on 30- ft high posts for safety, RMU is installed on 6-ft high platforms and is also easier to service in case of power outage. Bike thieves arrested Sikhander (33) and Sabeer Basha (32) were arrested on Oct. 23 for stealing 2-wheelers in the neighbourhood and around. They were apprehended by a special team of Ashok Nagar Police while trying to steal a bike outside a park in Ashok Nagar. According to a police officer, several cases of 2-wheeler thefts were reported from K. K. Nagar, Ashok Nagar and MGR Nagar in the past two or three months. To solve the series of thefts, a special team led by Sub- Inspector Arul kept a close watch on the two suspects for more than 40 days and nabbed them in the act outside a park. The accused confessed that they used to target bikes that were parked in front of parks, especially those not locked. A closed circuit television (CCTV) camera in K. K. Nagar Police Station opposite Sivan Park gave the police a lead wheelers were recovered from the accused. While Sikhander is a resident of Pudupet, his cousin Sabeer Bhasha is a resident of Thiruninravur. Both were produced before a judicial magistrate who remanded them to custody. They were sent to Puzhal prison. In a similar case, MGR Nagar police busted a gang of 2- wheeler thieves and arrested Mahendran alias Mahi, Lakshmanan, Ramesh, Rajesh Kumar and Murugan. Police said that Mahendran had earlier been arrested in a case of bike theft and is wanted in connection with several other cases. He is believed to have roped in the others who are suspected to be first-time offenders. Police are interrogating them to recover the stolen bikes. Nagar, residents have had to put up with the inconvenience caused by the earth dumped in the middle of the road around the chamber. The workers dug a 15-ft deep trench in the middle of the road to lay the manhole chamber. Even after the work was finished, the earth heaped on the road was not removed. It has been causing a lot of Sports Yogasana Association (West Mambalam) and Bodhi School of Yoga (Anna Nagar) in Chandrasekar Kalyana Mandapam, Ellaiamman Koil Street, West Mambalam last month. M. Babu (President, Yogasana Association) told Mambalam Times that the event was held to promote yoga among students. Prizes were awarded to the winners. Uncleared earth on Damodaran Street hampers motorists inconvenience to motorists, especially in the night as it poses a serious danger due to poor visibility. The heavy rains in the last couple of days have made the road slushy and slippery. Raised manhole cover poses danger The cover of a manhole in the junction of Rajan Street and Thirumurthy Street, T. Nagar has been fixed a foot above the road level. It poses a danger to motorists, especially 2-wheeler riders as they can trip and fall while going over it. It is also not visible during night. 5 November 5-11, 2016 CCTV grab helps police arrest car thief Ashok Nagar Police on Nov. 2 arrested a car thief from his scrap shop in Pudupet. They recovered 8 cars from him. The man, identified as Syed Abbas (55), was arrested based on CCTV footage from MGR Nagar. On Oct. 13, police recovered the CCTV footage in which two men were seen stealing a car. A special team under Hari Kumat (Asst. Commissioner, Ashok Nagar) was formed to nab them. According to the police, Syed confessed that he and his friend Riaz had stolen more than 30 cars from Chennai and nearby areas in the past six months. They used to target cars that remained parked on the roadside for several days. Abbas, who runs a scrap and secondhand car sales shop in Pudupet, sold the stolen vehicles after changing their registration numbers. Police have launched a hunt for Riaz. Interested applicants are requested to register online by Nov. 25 by visiting the website Two home alone women murdered within 48 hours In a span of 48 hours, two elderly women were found murdered in their homes in T. Nagar. On the evening of Nov. 2, a 58-year-old lawyer, P. Lakshmi Sudha, was found stabbed to death in her flat in Devan Colony, Muthalamman Koil Street and on Nov. 1, 60-yearold Shanthi was found gagged and smothered to death in her house on Habibullah Road, T. Nagar. Sudha s maid Vimala came to clean the house at around 5 p.m and found the door locked from inside. When the doorbell went unanswered, she called Sudha s elder sister Vidya living close by. She had a duplicate key to the flat. The two women let themselves in and were shocked to find Lakshmi s blood-ridden body in the bedroom. They immediately called the police. According to the police, Sudha s body was badly decomposed when found and she must have been murdered at least 2 days back. According to her uncle Sundaram living in the same apartment, Sudha, a divorcee, had stopped practising and was living alone in the flat. He told the police that her son Karthikeyan lived in Bengaluru. The police said that there were around ten stab marks on the back and there were no signs of robbery. In the other murder, Shanthi was found dead with her hands gagged and throat slit, suggesting a pre-planned murder. Relatives of the victim, visited the house as she had not responded to phone calls since Deepavali night and were shocked by what they saw inside the house. Police officers suspect Shanthi, a spinster, could have been murdered by robbers since her close relatives said that about 60 sovereigns of jewellery were missing from the house. The team found a cement window grille broken and suspect the robbers must have entered the house through the opening. Family members told police that they had last spoken to Shanthi on Oct. 30. Police are looking at CCTV footage from the houses on the street for leads. Shanthi had been staying in an old building, her ancestral home, for nearly three decades. According to the police, there have been no breakthroughs in either of the cases so far.

Once a person registers his/her details, the police will give the person a patta book to be signed once daily by a police personnel from the local station. The Police Department will also depute an officer to each police station to monitor the verification process and address any grievances in this regard. Vigneshwaran, a resident of Prakasam Street, T. Nagar and a 2nd year B. Com student, gave chase and retrieved his uncle, B. Vijaykumar s stolen autorickshaw on the morning of Nov. 1. The auto had been stolen from outside Shanthiniketan Flats, Prakasam Street on Oct. 5. A case was filed in Teynampet Police Station and the thief was also identified with the help of footage from the CCTV camera fixed at the apartment gate. The police had been unable to locate the auto or the thief. On the morning of Nov. 1, when Vigneshwaran was distributing newspapers at houses on Thirumalai Street, he noticed an auto bearing the same registration number as his uncle s auto on the road. He followed it on his 2-wheeler and noticed that it was being driven by the person who was identified as the thief in the CCTV footage. He immediately started following the auto. The thief, realizing that he was being followed, sped towards Valluvar Kottam with Vignesh following him closely. Vignesh also picked up a constable at Valluvar Kottam junction after briefly explaining about the theft but, during the chase, the constable got off near College Road, Nungambakkam saying that the area was outside his jurisdiction. In the delay, Vignesh lost sight of the auto. After searching around, he found it abandoned near College Lane. He immediately informed his uncle who came to the spot and retrieved his autorickshaw. His uncle found that the thief had driven the auto for almost 2500 km. to earn money. Vijaykumar depended on the auto for his livelihood and used to transport students to and from schools in the neighbourhood. Even after the auto was stolen, he did not stop the routine and hired an auto for the sake of the students. Vigneshwaran was honoured for his action by S. Sruuthi (a resident of 44/21, Bagirathiammal Street, T. Nagar), one of the students who travels daily in the auto.
