Nagar is to be converted into a gas powered one. The renovation cost is estimated at Rs 3 crores. According to a Corporation official, electric crematoriums are expensive to maintain and faults take longer to repair. He said that gas crematoriums are cheaper and easier to maintain. Currently, there are three units within Kannamapet burial ground, one of which is maintained by the Jain community. Of the remaining two units that are maintained by the city corporation, one is non-functional. The unit that is not functional now will be divided into two with a furnace each, and would be powered by Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). The crematorium will also have a renovated space for performing the final rites in the place of the building that is now being used, said the official. Along with the conversion, landscaping work will also be undertaken to improve the ambience. The maintenance of the crematorium will be handed over to Coimbatore-based Isha Foundation after the conversion. Put together at an estimated cost of Rs. 87 lakhs, the team comprises a video creator, two designers and a content writer. According to Corporation officials, the team will create interactive content to help explain the complexities of the projects in a simple manner. The team will create poster material or banners that can be placed on project sites. The content the team creates will also be shared with the media regularly to create awareness on projects, a Corporation official said. The official said that the communications team will create and upload YouTube videos and other digital content. Free tabs with educational content for middle school students The State govt. plans to distribute free android based tablets among government school students in Tamilnadu. According to K. A. Sengottaiyan (School Education Minister), the proposal is to distribute free tabs among Std. 6, 7 and 8 students in government/govt. aided schools across the state. He said that the govt. has sought assistance of Rs. 500 crores from the Union Human Resources Development Ministry for the project. The tablet will contain lessons, recorded lectures and related education material to help the students learn and understand better. He said that the students will also able to download contents prescribed under the revised syllabus and get trained on various subjects, particularly English. CMRL to launch van service at metro stations To improve last-mile connectivity for commuters, Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) will soon begin operating a fleet of airconditioned vans from stations to nearby localities. CMRL has floated tenders to identify an operator who can own, operate and maintain the vans. For a start, CMRL has planned to operate four 14-seater vans from Alandur metro station to DLF, Porur, mainly for IT employees. We decided to start with Alandur station as we received many requests from IT employees working in and around Porur saying that they were unable to use metro service due to lack of connectivity to their offices. The route for these vans will be fixed, the official said.at Alandur metro, which is the elevated transit hub connecting the two corridors of Phase 1, there will be a van available every 15 minutes. The charge (for the van service) is yet to be fixed but it is likely to be around Rs. 20, the official said. The service will be extended to other stations depending on the Alandur experiment. Last-mile connectivity has been a major issue for CMRL to attract more commuters. In the last few months, bicycle rental was introduced at nine stations while motorcycle rental, small buses, buggy services and tie-ups with cab aggregators were done for 16 stations. FREE

Tamil book on Narasimhar temples released A Tamil book on temples titled Ninaithathai Niraivetrum Narasimhar Thalangal written by K. The 352-page book is priced at Rs.150 According to Sai Kumar, the book provides information on 404 Narsimhar temples in Tamilnadu, Andhra, Telengana, Karnataka and Kerala. July 7-13, 2018 App helps cops curb inter-state robberies In an attempt to curb inter-state robberies, Chennai police have expanded the use of their FACETAGR app to other Southern states. The FACETAGR app was first adopted in October 2017 by T. Nagar police station in the city. With FACETAGR, once a suspect is scanned, it generates details about the person including the cases that have been registered against him/her and the police station the person comes under. After the scanning is complete, further steps are taken to deal with the criminals. According to police sources, so far only Pondicherry Crime Record Bureau has provided the criminal data. Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala and Karnataka are yet to provide the details. Currently, the database has records of 80,000 criminals. This app will help police departments find details of a person who belongs to another State. Access to this technology has been given to all beat policemen. Residents meet owners of commercial establishments Since T. Nagar turned into a commercial hub decades ago, residents have been feeling the heat not only over traffic and parking woes, but because of issues like lack of space for pedestrians, garbage clearance and overflow from storm water drains. Residents met businessmen including owners of textile and gold establishments in T. Nagar on June 30 to highlight problems like encroachments, irresponsible garbage disposal and parking woes. Residents urged the businessmen to exhibit social responsibility. B. Kannan (a long-time resident of Rangan Street and Secretary of T. Nagar Residents Welfare Association) said that there is no space to move about in T. Nagar today, where as a kid he used to play cricket on North Usman Road. He said that with commercial buildings coming up in residential areas, storm water drains are getting clogged with plastic, kitchen waste and other garbage. He said that despite a flyover, a leading textile showroom managed to get permission for an 8-storeyed structure to be re-built. In spite of the fire, no lessons have been learned. Due to the underground work in the reconstruction site, those living in the nearby building feel the tremors daily but there is no response from the owner or the administration, Kannan added. Businessmen and representatives from Jeyachandran Textiles, Pothys, Chennai Silks and GRT, who attended the meeting, promised to do their best to resolve the issues. The senior citizens need to bring their original Aadhaar card and copies to obtain fresh/renewed free bus passes and tokens. For every quarter, the passes are issued from the 21st of the last month of the previous quarter to the 30th of the next month (in effect, for 40 days) for free travel for 3 months. But in T. Nagar bus terminus there is only one counter to issue free passes. Due to this, often there is a long queue forcing many to come several times to get the free passes.
