4 Page 2 MAMBALAM TIMES Aug Sept. 6, 2013 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 65 Sama Iyer did not make much of an impact on the screen with Dumbachari for the simple reason that an actor doing eleven-quick-change roles was no great shakes in a movie! Critics also felt that the hero Krishnamurthy should not have done such modern day roles! Interestingly the title of the play and film Dumbachari became an idiomatic expression in Tamil language to denote a vain fun-loving spendthrift! Another popular film of 1935, also based on a successful stage play, was Ratnavali written by one of the founding fathers of the Renaissance of Tamil theatre, Pammal Sambandam Mudaliar. AV. Meiyappan produced this film in Calcutta and the now-forgotten pioneer R. Prakash was engaged to direct the film. For reasons never disclosed Prakash walked out of film after the first day s shooting. The latter-day noted writer-director A. T. Krishnaswamy made his debut in cinema as Assistant Director with this film on a princely salary of Rs. 35 per month. Shooting of Ratnavali began in Pioneer Studios with Krishnamurthy as the hero and P. S. Ratna Bai and P. S. Saraswathi Bai as the two heroines. They always acted together and were paid Rs. 25,000 by Meyyappan, a fortune in The sisters were extremely popular and were household names. They were very businesslike in their dealings and would work for a period of only 45 days in a picture. If the production dragged on they had to be paid extra on a pro-rata basis. If the producer failed to pay in advance on the morning of the 46th day the two women would vanish leaving no trace behind, not even a whiff of perfume! Before he walked out of this movie, Prakash noticed an extra (now called junior artiste in India), a slim seductive young woman, light-skinned with large expressive eyes playing the minor role of a palace maid. Prakash told the assistant director A. T. Krishnaswamy, ATK, mark my words, that smart dame will go a long way! The barely-known beauty from Srirangam was the latter-day star, legendary comedienne, T. A. Mathuram, wife of N. S. Krishnan! In the credit titles of Ratnavali, her name appears as T. R. A. Mathuram. (R. Prakash, one of the pioneers of Indian Cinema and a sadly neglected figure today, seemed to have possessed an ESP (extra sensory perception) of noticing the mighty oak in the tiny acorn. He was directing a film during the 1950s, a few years before his demise, when a slim lovely girl from Tirunelveli district, totally unknown, brought to play a bit role, attracted his discerning farseeing eye. He told his crew that the girl would make it to the top. She was the latter-day Indian movie star, Waheeda Rehman!) With the director taking the train back to Madras, Meiyappan had to think fast and overnight a popular Bengali film director who had made silent and talking pictures in Hindi and Tamil, Profulla Ghosh was engaged to take over and direct the film. As he did not know Tamil, Krishnaswamy had to translate every word written or spoken in English! While Ratnavali progressed without any hitch, problems of a different kind surfaced later. When the film was edited, it was found that the lip synchronization was faulty. In technical lingo the picture was non-sync. When artistes on screen opened their mouths no sound was heard and when sounds were heard the artistes lips were sealed shut! Ratnavali (1935) did not fare as well as expected in the box office in spite of the popular star cast, pleasing music (composed by the legendary Papanasam Sivan) and comedy. Moviegoers found it annoying and irritating to watch a film in which the picture and sound went their separate ways! State Government makes meters mandatory for autos, announces revised fares Just two days before the Supreme Court deadline of Aug. 27, Tamilnadu Government made using meters mandatory for autorickshaws throughout the state and has also announced revised fares. The new fares are Rs. 25 for the first 1.8 km and Rs. 12 per km thereafter. The night fares between 11 p.m and 5 a.m will be 50% more than the base fares. The waiting charge has been fixed at Rs for every five minutes and Rs. 42 for an hour. The Auto Drivers Association has sought time till Sept.15 to collect the new rate cards from RTO offices. The deadline for calibration of the meter is Oct.15. Two temporary helpline numbers and have been set up for the benefit of commuters to lodge complaints against erring auto drivers who are reluctant to turn on the meters. At present, auto drivers are allowed to use the old meters set to the outdated tariff. However, the department has released a conversion chart that will help the driver and commuter calculate the new fares over specific distances. For instance, if the meter reading shows Rs.14 for 2 km, the commuter will have to pay around Rs ( x12); similarly, when the meter indicates Rs. 68 for 11 km, the fare to be paid is Rs ( x12). The State government will also spend around Rs. 80 crores to install GPS-enabled meters with digital printers in autorickshaws. According to a traffic official, this will ensure that commuters are charged the exact fare and will also enable in monitoring of the location of the vehicles in case of an emergency. The meters will also be provided with a panic button that commuters can press in case of any danger or emergency. The button which will be wired to the GPS will send an alert to the police control room for assistance. The State Government has also issued a warning that in case any auto driver is caught overcharging a customer or found using a tampered meter, his license will be cancelled and the vehicle seized. Autorickshaw unions have welcomed the fact that the new meter system will help weed out vehicles that run without permits. There is a plan to give identity cards to the drivers. To get the ID and tariff cards, the drivers will have to produce their permits. This procedure will ensure that those who run the vehicle illegally, without permits, will be off the roads, said J. Seshasayanam, general secretary of the Madras Metro Auto Drivers Association. Commuters have also given a sigh of relief since they need not haggle any more with the drivers over fares. However a number of them were skeptical about the enforcement over the long run.

Nagar, Mambalam, K. K. Nagar and Ashok Nagar to spread awareness about the new compulsory meter rule for autorickshaws and the revised fares. At present, the auto drivers are allowed to use the old meters set to the outdated tariff but commuters have to pay as per the revised rate using a conversion chart. Year-long free certificate course in Malayalam from tomorrow Akshara Malayalee Association (Bharathi Colony, 1 st Avenue, Ashok Nagar) and Malayalam Mission (Government of Kerala) will jointly conduct a free 1-year-long certificate course in Malayalam from Sunday, September 1, in Hari Om Vidyalaya (5 th Sector, K. Prabhakaran in LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Blue Cross rescues injured stray dog Sir, A stray dog in our street got injured in an accident. It was in severe pain and was howling all the time. It could not move much and remained confined to a shaded spot on the street. Since the residents were scared to handle it and take it to a veterinarian, one of the residents contacted Blue Cross. A couple of their employees reached the spot within an hour and handled it carefully even though it resisted and took it away in their rescue van for treatment. I thank Blue Cross for their excellent service in the rescue, treatment and adoption of such aggrieved animals. I appeal to the readers of Mambalam Times to not ignore any animal in plight that they see and instead contact any of the animal welfare associations like Blue Cross or SPCA. Sadanand s column Aadhar Torture published last week in Mambalam Times. He has given expression to what many of us think but cannot communicate so clearly and cleverly. I personally made three futile attempts to register for this Aadhar card and flew from the Center of excellence fearing flu. Among my friends, only one senior citizen succeeded in registering his biometric data. He had to send his wife abroad and so he haunted the Aadhar center day in and day out to fulfill this Nandan Nilekani mission. Even now, every morning a large number of admirers gather round him in the park to listen to his fulfilled Aadhar mission. The basic premise of Aadhar I reckon is to simplify the mundane lives of the sons of the soil, but instead it has complicated everything with tons of toil. Any error can be rectified if we approach it with an open mind. I welcome the suggestion of Sadanand. If unemployed graduates are employed for this task, we are prepared to even host them. A couple of days back, I was pleasantly surprised to receive a call from the T. Nagar constituency MLA, V. P. Kalairajan. He informed that a woman resident of our colony had called him to complain that CMWSSB officials are not clearing the blocks in the sewer lines on Motilal Street in spite of several complaints by our Association. He said that he had spoken to the concerned AE and that necessary action will be taken in this regard. He also requested me to pass on this information to the resident who had made the complaint as he had lost her number. While on my way to meet this lady to convey Kalairajan s message, I was also pleasantly surprised to see that SMWSSB workers had already started the work on clearing the blocks in the sever lines. While it is an oft-made complaint that the elected representatives be they MPs, MLAs or the councilors seldom interact with the public and show up their faces only when elections are held, but there are a few like Kalairajan who keep themselves in the loop with the public. Nagar) on Aug. 28. Traffic personnel nearby came to the rescue to clear the traffic. The vendors who showed a lackadaisical attitude adjusted their carts to make way for the ambulance. The patient s relatives pleaded with the vendors and other vehicles to make way for the ambulance. Watch tower erected to regulate traffic near Usman Road flyover Traffic Department installed a new watch tower below Usman Road flyover between Nageswara Road and Prakasam Road in T. Nagar on Aug. 26. R. Thiruvengadam (Traffic Inspector, T. Nagar Range) told Mambalam Times that the new tower will be used to regulate traffic for a longer length of the road with the help of microphones.
