3 January 4-10, 2014 MAMBALAM TIMES Portion of Habibullah Road caves in, damages sewage line A 2-foot-wide by 4-foot-long portion of Habibullah Road, T. Nagar, near plot 120, caved in thereby forming a deep crater, on Jan. 1. The portion of the road has been barricaded and reflectors placed to warn motorists. A foul smell is emanating from the crater. A Metrowater official said that the caving-in of the road has damaged the sewage pipeline running underneath. He said that same will be rectified in a couple of days and the crater will be filled with dirt and patched up. Contest on Vishnu Sahasranaamam for school students The Vishnu Sahasranaama Nidhi Trust will conduct its preliminary Vishnu Sahasranaamam recitation competition for school students on Feb. 2 in Virugambakkam. The contest is divided into two categories according to the age group of under 11 years and years. Participants need to chant all the 108 stotrams from Visvam to Vanamali. STS was started by Swami Dayananda Saraswati in 2006 in villages in Tiuvallur and Kancheepuram districts to empower poor students with extra classes after regular school. Its administrative office is located in Flat 4, C -block, Silverpark Apartments, 24, Thanikachalam Road, T. Nagar. Since its inception, such schools have been opened in more than 580 villages in Tamilnadu, educating more than 20,000 students from lower income groups and downtrodden families. An educated person from the village is selected and trained to conduct the classes. The schools are usually conducted in temples, community halls or even under trees. Apart from the regular subjects, the students also undergo training in yoga, pranayama and co-curricular activities. These schools function from 5.30 p.m to 8.30 p.m on weekdays. STS received the Best Educational Institution award from Kalvi Chudar magazine in November last year. R. P. Krishnammachari (Secretary, STS and Chairman, Tex Bioscience) said that the unscheduled and long power cuts in suburbs and villages are affecting the conducting of the classes. Solar lamps are a cheap alternative to conduct the classes unhindered when there is a power cut, he said. In June last year, solar lamps were installed in 150 villages, he added. Nagar To mark the 150 th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, Swami Padmasthananda is conducting a rath yatra carrying an idol of Swami Vivekananda across Tamilnadu since April last year. The rath has so far traversed over 18,000 km. The rath arrived in Bashyam Road, T. Nagar, on Jan. 2 and was taken through a number of streets in T. Nagar and Mambalam. Nagar Residents Welfare Association in Mambalam Times last week. The meet was well attended and the members discussed in detail Chennai Corporation s proposed extension of the South Usman Road flyover and the construction of a new one on North Usman Road at an estimated cost of Rs. 260 to Rs.350 crores. The existing South Usman Road flyover which begins barely 50 meters from T. Nagar bus terminus and ends in front of GRT Thangamaligai is more of a hurdle than a palliative to ease the traffic congestion. The flyover only helps commuters to skip Panagal Park junction, it does not even skip the ever busy Ranganathan Street junction. The service lanes are very narrow as the flyover was constructed without acquiring additional land on either side of the road and are therefore always congested. The already narrow service lanes are further misused for parking vehicles and encroached upon by hawkers and little action is taken by the police or Corporation to eliminate the same. The participating residents were of the unanimous view that the flyover, which was built ostensibly to ease congestion, has only created traffic chaos and a host of other problems for the residents, effectively choking the way for free movement of pedestrians and vehicles. Further various court orders obtained by the residents have not been implemented by the police or the Corporation on the removal of hawkers and for better utilization of space beneath the flyover. The present proposal of the Corporation to extend Usman Road flyover and construct a new one on both sides will only compound the woes. As a measure to decongest, the Association requests the Corporation to construct Y-shape pedestrian subways on Usman Road at Pothy s junction, near T.
