For more details, call or GST cut on restaurant bills not passed on, rue customers When the Central Goverment announced slashing of GST in restaurants from 18 to 12 to 5%, customers were enthused that the food bills will come down. However, customers have found that most restaurants and hotel chains, instead of passing on the benefit to the customers, have raked in the benefit by increasing the base price of the food items. T. Anand (a local resident) told Mambalam Times that he regularly eats in a popular South Indian restaurant in G. N. Chetty Road, where there is no change in prices of dishes though GST has come down by 13%. When questioned, the manager said that the rates are decided by the management, Anand added. While this has irked consumers, restaurateurs argue that they are merely compensating for the benefit of input tax credit taken away from them. The Centre on Nov. 10 slashed the GST rates for restaurants by upto 15 per cent, barring those that serve food in luxury hotels and banquet halls. But at the same time, it took away the benefit of input tax credit for food outlets with an annual revenue of Rs. 1 crore or more. We expect to reduce the price eventually once we have a clearer idea about the input tax we lose. But until then many food outlets will continue to hike prices, said T. Natarajan, honourary secretary of the South India Hotels and Restaurants Association (SIHRA).

Nagar & Mambalam Vol. 23, No th Issue : November 25 - December 1, 2017 Restoration of water bodies prevents flooding in low lying areas The restoration of water bodies well before the monsoon ensured that there was minimal to almost nil flooding in most low lying areas in the city during the recent spell of rains. It also benefited in recharging of groundwater. The work of cleaning, desilting, deepening and restoring 32 water bodies across Tamilnadu including Chennai, was carried out by volunteers of the Environmentalist Foundation of India (EFI) in association with the urban local bodies. In the city, ponds in West Mambalam, Chellaperumal Nagar, Ranga Nagar, Karasangal, and the Seekana channel were restored. According to a senior official of EFI, a large number of both natural and manmade water bodies have been lost permanently due to the rapid and unplanned urbanization. He said that there is an urgent need for mass sensitisation on water conservation and immediate field-based efforts to revive fresh water habitats to prevent future calamities It takes around three months to restore a water body. The Corporation has also been campaigning for installation, restoration and cleaning of rain water harvesting systems in houses, which too has contributed to recharging of ground water, said an official. Permission was sought from Chennai Corporation last year. According to CMRL officials, a 5-meter stretch of the canal had to be blocked to build a station box for the underground Nandanam station. After a part of the canal was closed, a 100-meter stretch was built to reconnect the two ends of the canal for continued water flow. The 6-metre-deep Nanda-nam canal is connected to Mambalam water channel, which empties into the Adyar River. The 120-meter diversion has been provided around Defence Quarters on Anna Salai which is close to the entry and exit gates of the metro station. Suicide note leads to film financier, goes missing A special police team searched the residence and office of Anbuchezhiyan (a film financier), who is on the run following his name being mentioned in the suicide note of B. Ashok Kumar, who took his own life at his residence in Valsaravakkam on Nov. 21. The suicide note of Ashok Kumar alleged that the accused Anbuchezhiyan issued life threats to his family and that he was paying interest for the loan during the past 10 years. Ashok Kumar was a co-producer of the production company run by the actor and director Sasikumar. According to police sources, teams have been formed to locate Anbuchezhiyan and alerts have been issued at airports, train and bus stations. She can be contacted in / LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Page 5 Threatening suicide is no way to protest Sir, I recently read a media report that a youth climbed the cell phone tower opposite US Consulate (Anna Salai) and threatened to commit suicide if his demands such as resignation of the Tamilnadu Chief Minister/Deputy Chief Minister were not met. After Police and the Fire and Rescue Department official talked to him, the youth was safely brought down. One must thank all those who had persuaded the youth to come down. Notwithstanding one s right to protest on any given issue, under no stretch of imagination does the protest of the above nature, which is on the increase, make sense. While there are various peaceful means of protest through which the attention of the authorities can be drawn, the one indulged in by the youth is nothing but a veiled threat amounting to blackmailing the establishment. Irrespective of whether these are by one s own volition or instigation, these types of protest deserve stringent punishment. Aside from endangering one s own life, the protester also makes the lives of the officials miserable. Nobody, including the officials, can be held responsible if a youth tries to climb atop a cell phone tower and attempts to commit suicide protesting on various issues. This type of protest must be treated with the contempt it deserves as these are the height of arrogance. If the public does not attach much credence to such protests and no help is offered, naturally, the protestor will think twice in making such an attempt. The next time, when somebody climbs up a tower in protest against any issue, leave him alone. Fearing for his own life, he will finally climb down much faster than the time he took to climb up. Jayaraman Sivaraman, T. Nagar Thozhan conducts road safety campaign in Natesan Park Thozhan, a NGO involved in promoting road safety in Chennai, organised an awareness campaign in Natesan Park, T. Nagar recently to promote road safety. A Thozhan member told Mambalam Times that most accident victims can be saved if first aid is provided within the first 15 minutes of the accident. He said that just calling the ambulance will often not save the victim, but the first aid will.
