K. P. Sebastin (Sub-Inspector) said that a number of commuters are likely to purchase jewellery and other expensive items that day and could become soft targets for criminals. He said the station has eight CCTV camerasat strategic locations which will be moni- tored intensively to keep a lookout for known criminals, pickpockets, passenger movement and any suspicious activities. He added that eight more cameras will be installed in and around the station. A public assistance booth will also function round the clock to assist the passengers, he said. More RPF personnel will be deployed in both the platforms and the trains to safeguard the passengers, he added. Blood donation drive in Vani Mahal today Mahalakshmi Badminton Club (T. His contact number is Solar powered traffic lights removed within a month of installation Double murder of elderly sisters solved after 3 years Police arrested seven persons, including a couple and a juvenile, in connection with the brutal murder of two elderly women in West Mambalam on May 10, Police said that the couple Mahendran (48) and Vijayalakshmi (42) masterminded the murder of the sisters Jayalakshmi (75) and Kamakshi (72) who were residing together in a flat on K.R. Koil Street (West Mambalam). On interrogation, Vijayalakshmi confessed to the crime and its modus operandi. According to the police, Vijayalakshmi had visited the sisters a couple of times in connection with a maidservant job and had noticed them wearing lots of heavy jewellery. She presumed they must be having lots of cash at home. She along with her husband then planned to rob the women. They sought the help of a cousin (a former convict) and four other friends in committing the crime. On the night of May 10 she knocked on the door of the unsuspecting sisters and barged in along with her husband and other friends. They choked the sisters to death and made way with the jewellery and Rs. 20,000 in cash kept in the almirah. Their body was found the next morning when the regular maidservant came to work. Investigating officers said the women were wearing imitation jewellery and the killers only gained Rs. 20,000 that they found as cash in the house. The sisters had lived in the building for two years with six tenants. Kamakshi, who was a spinster, was a postgraduate in chemistry from Calcutta University. She had retired from King Institute of Preventive Medicine (Guindy). Jayalakshmi was a divorcee and had no children. The investigating officers faced several setbacks in their probe. The women had no relatives who could estimate how much money had been taken from the house. Investigators found Rs. 12 lakhs in their bank accounts which had been untouched. The sisters had nominated each other as beneficiaries. There are frequent accidents at the junction because of the lack of safety measures for pedestrians. At the centre of the junction, though there is a signal, it caters only to the vehicles and there is no zebra crossing. The pedestrians are forced to exercise extreme caution as they have to cross based on the direction the vehicles are plying.
