5 The Low Town was once a thriving port along the banks of the River Severn, while the High Town held the castle, the churches, and many fine 16th and 17th century mansions. Charles I declared the view to be the finest in all my kingdom. Bridgnorth is renowned for its antique shops and open-air markets which attract shoppers from far and wide. Each Saturday the High Street and Meredith s Yard host the popular market which includes a range of fresh fish, flowers and preserves to name a few. There are a number of high street shops and restaurants along with a cinema and supermarkets for everyday amenities. History St Leonards Close in Bridgnorth is one of the oldest parts of Bridgnorth. The original church on the site of St Leonards was believed to date back to late Saxon or Norman times with additions made over the centuries. During the Civil War, St Leonards was used by Cromwell s troops as an ammunition store: a cannon shot caused it to explode and the ensuing fire swept through the town. Today, the Church no longer has regular services but is extremely well cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. The bells ring between the hours of 8am and 7pm and it hosts the annual English Haydn Festival and many other recitals and exhibitions. Schools in the area include: Bridgnorth Endowed, Moffats, King Edward VI College, Wolverhampton Grammar School, Wrekin College, Shrewsbury School and Shrewsbury High School. Recreation is well catered for with many golf courses, including Astbury Hall, Bridgnorth and Worfield, as well as good riding, walking and fishing. The Severn Valley Railway runs between Bridgnorth and Kidderminster following the River Severn for much of its route and hosts numerous special events throughout the year Telford and access to the M54 is 12 miles away and provides onwards travel to the Midlands business centres and the wider road network.
