Continue over the brick railway bridge and bear left at the next junction. Continue until reaching the traffic lights, turning left onto Morda Road. Continue over the speed humps and just after the main entrance to the Marches School on your right hand side, turn left into Weston Lane. Continue straight on, following the road around to the right. Plas Wilmot can be found on your right hand side. Situation Oswestry is a charming market town on the English/Welsh border which is well situated for commuting to the North, the West Midlands and Wales. Oswestry has a number of amenities including high street shops, restaurants, boutiques and supermarkets along with a Saturday market and farmers market. There are a number of highly regarded schools in the private and state sector including Oswestry School, Bellan House Preparatory, Moreton Hall and The Marches. 4 History In 1829, a gentleman joiner from Oswestry, by the name of Edward Salter began building Plas Wilmot - a charming villa, on the edge of his native town. In 1842 the house passed to his eldest daughter Mary Salter, who married Edward Shaw, the son of a local farmer. Plas Wilmot came into its own as a family home during this time, and was considerably enlarged and altered, to accommodate Edward and Mary Shaw, their four children, a governess, a cook and a housemaid. In 1891 the Salters third daughter Susan married local railway man Tom Owen, and they too joined the household. Their son, Wilfred Edward Salter Owen (later known throughout the world as the First World War poet, Wilfred Owen), was born under the coved ceiling of the main bedroom, his grandfather s room, on 18th March, Wilfred Owen Widely recognised as one of the finest voices of the First World War, Wilfred Owen ( ) was born at Plas Wilmot, Oswestry and brought up in Birkenhead and Shrewsbury. Through the bleak realism of his poetry, and in vivid descriptions in letters home, Owen strove to give voice to the soldiers in his care, to show the world the Pity of War. Although he was virtually unknown in his lifetime, poems such as Anthem for Doomed Youth, ( What passing bells for those who die as cattle? ) still resonate today and modern scholars regard Owen s work as the most significant poetry to come out of the First World War. His influence on later generations of poets and readers is widely acknowledged, with several of his poems having been included in Benjamin Britten s War Requiem. A Doomed Youth himself, Owen died in battle in 1918, a week before Armistice Day, at the age of just twenty five.

6 Description Plas Wilmot dates back to the 1800 s with later additions up to the 1940 s. The house has beautiful sash windows representing the Georgian era along with ceiling rose, high ceilings, coved ceiling cornicing and parquet flooring.
