10 PRIORS HARDWICK VILLAGE Priors Hardwick derives its name from the fact that it was originally a manor belonging to the Priors of Coventry. The term Hardwick is derived from the Old English word heorde meaning herd or flock and wic describing an outlying farm or settlement. The land was one of 24 vills which formed Earl Leofric s original endowment to the monastery he founded in Coventry, a gift which was confirmed in 1043 by Edward the Confessor. At the Dissolution of the monasteries the manor of PRIORS HARDWICK was granted, in April 1542, to Sir Edmund Knightley and the Lady Ursula his wife. It was sold in 1633 to William, Lord Spencer and is currently held by Earl Spencer. The small village of Priors Hardwick occupies an elevated position along a ridge of high ground within the open countrywide of south Warwickshire. The largely dispersed settlement has evolved around a central triangular area of open meadows, the site of an abandoned medieval village. Clustered around the dominant feature of St. Mary's Church are picturesque cottages and houses and the well-known Butchers Arms. Also in the sister village of Priors Marston just 1.5 miles away is a school, sports club, pub, village hall and post office.
