3 For sale freehold 3 The Old Signal House is an extremely rare coastal property situated in a private and secluded coastal setting and one of three adjoined cottages that was once The Old Signal House, formally a Trinity Lighthouse Service Signal Station. The original property was built at the turn of the last century and originally used to house the families of staff that manned the Eddystone Lighthouse which lies approximately 10 miles off shore. When the lighthouse became semi-automated the building was then used to house the controls for the lighthouse and was only made available for conversation into three residential cottages when the lighthouse became fully automated. The surrounding countryside and coastline is owned by the Mount Edgecumbe Estate that dates back to the 18th century. The immediate coastline includes an 18th Century grotto that is still preserved today and there is an Iron Age fort and the crumbling ruins of a medieval chapel on the Rame Peninsula nearby, as the area was heavily defended during the Napoleonic wars. The property lies close to the villages off Kingsand and Cawsand and all are situated within a Historic Conservation Area and designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Old Signal House itself is approached down a private lane with extensive parking for all three properties. There is a communal treatment plant for the sewage waste and there are separate storage tanks for the three independent oil-fired central heating systems. The property has both mains water and electricity. In addition to the shared parking there is a shared flight of steps down to the property from the lane above. Each of the three cottages has its own private garden as well as shared communal garden and on top of the three adjoining cottages is a flat roof, with each of the three cottages having their own private part of the terrace that is perfect for enjoying the panoramic coastal views. It is evident the cottage has been very well maintained over the years Cottage 3 is configured with the kitchen and sitting/dining room on the ground floor, with direct access out to the terrace in front of the house. On arrival, the cottage is accessed from the rear and through a side door on the first floor, through a porch and into a corridor.
4 Off the corridor are three bedrooms, a family bathroom and a first floor sitting room. Two of the three bedrooms and the sitting room enjoy lovely coastal views and all have high ceilings. The sitting room has a wood burner and a wooden floor. The principal bedroom enjoys the coastal views to the front and side and has an en-suite shower room at the front that also enjoys the panoramic scene. The family bathroom and one of the bedrooms are at the rear and the second bedroom has side views out across the coastline to Cawsand and Kingsand. Stairs lead down to the ground floor kitchen/breakfast room that also enjoys lovely waterfront views. The kitchen has an induction hob, electric oven, washing machine and fridge freezer. There is also a W.C. off the kitchen. Beyond the kitchen is a sitting room/ dining room that again enjoys lovely views out to sea. The front door off the kitchen leads directly onto the terrace to enjoy the 180 degree panoramic views with Dartmoor in the distance to the north east and Prawle Point to the south east. Outside and to the rear of the cottage are wooden steps that lead up to the roof terrace which is divided (on paper) into three for each cottage. This roof terrace enjoys some of the best panoramic views from the property. There is a private grass lawn to the front and side of the cottage which is fenced in and dog friendly. Also at the front of the house is access to the oil-fired boiler shed. To the front of the private lawn is a communal garden with a shared path leading down to the rocks on the headland itself. The Rame Peninsula The villages of Kingsand and Cawsand are situated within a Historic Conservation Area and designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with unspoilt clean beaches. The former fishing villages have remained completely unspoilt with a maze of narrow streets and pretty cottages. This is a thriving community with excellent local pubs, restaurants, tea rooms, shops and churches. The magnificent coastline of the Rame Peninsula and Mount Edgcumbe House and Park are all within easy walking distance. Also nearby are the renowned beaches of Whitsand Bay with its fine golden sand, excellent swimming and surfing facilities.
5 The city of Plymouth is easily reached via the Torpoint Ferry or the Tamar Bridge. The Cremyll Ferry, a regular foot passenger service, runs from Plymouth to Mount Edgcumbe with a second ferry running during the summer months from the Barbican in Plymouth to Cawsand Beach. You will see steps on your left hand side signposted The Old Signal House. There are 87 steps down to the old Signal House.
