2 WElcome Langara House was designed, like many other detached private residences of the early Victorian era, to face east, so that the master of the house would wake naturally with the light of the rising sun. Great consideration was also given to orientating the house to benefit from the uninterrupted view across its own and neighbouring gardens, as far as Dalkey and Killiney Hill. To this end, the architect James Edward Rogers ( ) designed Langara House with no less than six bay windows from which to benefit from the light and the views. Commissioned and built circa 1860 by Arthur Samuels ( ), a practicing solicitor and Proctor of Office for the then Archbishop of Dublin, as his country home, the property still retains the peace and serenity of a country estate, yet is located within a short stroll of the seafront and the extensive facilities of Dun Laoghaire, Sandycove and Glasthule. Located within a few minutes stroll of the seafront, numerous local yacht clubs, Glenageary and Sandycove Tennis Clubs, Dart (Glenageary and Sandycove) and bus (No. 7) transport links, restaurants, farmers markets and the extensive shopping facilities and amenities of Dun Laoghaire, Glasthule, Sandycove and Dalkey. The outer section of the main hall is tiled with classical sandstone flags with slate insets. Above dado, the walls have been hand painted with murals depicting classical architectural features and putti. Marble effect plasterwork decorates the area below the dado rail. A pair of decorative arches lead to the inner hallway and the staircase. Apart from the cornices, ceiling roses and period features generally associated with a property of this stature, the hallway is further enhanced by a set of four magnificent Georgian solid mahogany panelled internal doors, which are believed to have come from a house on Merrion Square.

4 DOUBLE DRAWING ROOM (12.6 into bay x 4.65) Two separate but interconnecting drawing rooms are located to the left of the hallway, with original polished floorboards, cornicing, centerpieces, working shutters, antique style radiators and numerous tall windows providing bright and elegant space for entertaining. Both rooms, connected by a large pair of fold-back panelled doors, feature open fires with matching pillared Carrara marble mantlepieces with slate inset and brass surrounds. A bay window overlooks the front garden and there are three other south facing windows/french doors, which provide access via the conservatory and a wrought iron terrace with spiral staircase, to the suntrap patio below. CONSERVATORY (4.35 x 3m) Accessed directly from the drawing room, the south facing conservatory includes Edwardian leaded glass panels, a sandstone with slate inset tiled floor and French doors to the wrought iron terrace with spiral staircase to the patio below. 6 LANGARA HOUSE DINING ROOM (6m into bay x 4.5m) To the right of the hallway, the dining room, with cornicing, centerpiece, picture rail, working shutters, original polished floorboards, antique style radiators and pillared Carrara marble mantlepiece with gas fire, overlooks the gardens via the large bay window. BUTLER S PANTRY (2.2m x 2.1m) To facilitate entertaining, the Butler s pantry provides wall and floor unit storage for china and glass, Siemens dishwasher, Beko under counter fridge, Siemens stainless steel 5 ring gas hob, Siemens Microwelle Plus (microwave/regular oven) and stainless steel sink, set in a granite counter top. STAIRCASE TO FIRST FLOOR An elegant carpeted staircase with brass stair rods and mahogany handrail lead to the first floor. The half landing features an arch top window.

22 GARDEN The gravel entrance driveway is lined with majestic 200 year old beech trees beneath which grow woodland flowers such as daffodils, bluebells and wild garlic. The garden is stocked with a variety of mature trees, hedges, shrubs and flowering plants including holly, yew, laburnum, plum, acacia, acur palmatum, silver birch, box hedging, vine, wisteria and a large pink flowering magnolia. A short flight of York stone steps leads down from the graveled forecourt to the lawn, ideal for entertaining in a marquee. One such wedding reception was recorded in 1937 when the owners at the time, Mr. & Mrs. George Ackerley hosted the celebration when their daughter Betty ( one of the Akerley girls ) married Edward Brownett. The marriage service was held at St. Paul s Church on Silchester Road and the reception held at their home, Langara House, in a marquee on the lawn. Many celebrations have been staged on the lawn since then. The lawn is also used for less formal events and features a timber framed two storey children s play house with ladder steps and a slide. A garage with storage area is located in the north west corner of the garden, accessed via a continuation of the gravel driveway. Sheltered by a high granite wall, the south facing York stone patio is the location of choice for both entertaining and impromptu everyday meals in the garden, due to its convenient proximity to both the main house kitchen and the mews kitchen. Further easy access to the conservatory and drawing room above is via the wrought iron spiral staircase and terrace.
