3 Beurs van Berlage Damrak ZJ Amsterdam The Beurs van Berlage (stock exchange of Berlage) is a milestone in the history of modern architecture It is build in the same period as Amsterdam s Centraal Station and the State Museum, but what is really special about the Beurs, however, is that 80% of it is authentic The Beurs van Berlage was built by Hendrik Petrus Berlage ( ) for the Municipality of Amsterdam to accommodate all forms of stock trading Construction started in 1898 and was completed in 1903 It was Berlage s first really large commission and it would make him world famous The building was constructed on a reclaimed tract of land alongside the Amstel river, where trading ships used to moor photo: Fernando Miguel García Martín Project is public! 1903 Hendrik Petrus Berlage MI_MOA Cafe opening hours: Monday - Saturday: 10-18h Sunday: 11-18h Tel: (0) , Beurs van Berlage Café: (0) In the Main Hall of the Beurs van Berlage exhibitions are hosted on a regular basis For an overview of current and coming exhibitions see their website Take a train, tram or bus to Amsterdam Centraal Station Follow the signs to the Centrum exit and walk towards Dam Square (southern direction) On your lefthandside you can already see the Beurs van Berlage, a large orange-brick building with several towers etc 3

4 photo: Jan de Vries photo: Jan de Vries INIT Jacob Bontiusplaats PL Amsterdam This Multi-company building occupies a central position in the inner-city Oostenburgereiland industrial estate which has been earmarked for redevelopment The size (approx 90 by 190 metres and some 19 metres high), the no-nonsense detailing and materials (concrete, steel, glass), and the neutral Manhattan grid of internal streets give the building an industrial character One-third of the total gross floor area of m2 is in use on the two lowest levels as a depot for the city sanitation department This underworld has been topped by a second ground level above which there are three floors of lettable business premises, car parking and collective facilities Two wide streets and, at right angles to these, three alleyways containing vertical circulation and sanitary units, divide the building into twelve blocks The façade has a double glass skin capable of acting as an information carrier for advertising and suchlike photo: Jan de Vries Project is public! 2004 Building physics consultant Structural engineer Groosman Cauberg-Huygen DHV Heijmans Vastgoed Groosman 4

5 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Bjorn Utpott Parkrand Dr Colijnstraat CP Amsterdam The neighbourhood Geuzenveld is located in the western garden cities of Amsterdam There is plenty of public space available but most of these green spaces lack grandeur The project is regarded to be a 'key-operation within the urban renewal of Geuzeveld-Slotermeer The building should provide an iconographic quality to the neighbourhood which it was lacking before The housing block is situated at the edge of a park and consists out of 5 towers, positioned on a deck, carrying a two level roof plate The positioning of the towers provides a clear view from all apartments to the park Because of the holes, or empty spaces in-between, the dwellings behind the big block also still have a view on the park The title of the project - Parkrand means park-edge photo: Bjorn Utpott Developer MVRDV Kristal Het Oosten Bjorn_Utpott The Geuzenveld neighbourhood is west of the city centre of Amsterdam Tram line 13 takes you from the Central Train Station to the neighbourhood Geuzenveld Stop at Dhr H Colijnstraat You can also take bus number 21 and 192 from the centre Stop at Dhr H Colijnstraat 5

6 Timorplein Celebesstraat EJ Amsterdam New housing replacing existing buildings in 4 locations, comprising a total of 128 apartments, in 3 different phases The first section, on Timorplein (square) was built in 2002 The second section is on the corner of Borneostraat and Delistraat The third section includes the end of the flats on Celebesstraat These end flats are linked by a car park that runs underneath Delistraat The flats on Celebesstraat are along the railway line Despite the need for sound reduction the architect decided to use the same storey-high windows that characterize the neighbors The large amount of space gives the apartments a very light, spacious feel The 72 units in this 3th section are very diverse in type, ranging from apartments to maisonettes, to penthouses and studio apartments The project also includes 21 social sector apartments, 2 of which are studio apartments This is a very beautiful urban plan, interacting with the existing structures in a very sensitive and subtle way 2004 Contractor Structural engineer Dok en Vink Bouw Nieuwkoop Strackee De Alliantie MI_MOA Take tram 9 from Central Station direction Diemen Stop at Lineausstraat and walk north, into the 'Eerste van Swindenstraat' Go left at the Celebesstraat, walk for 100 m and you'll see the houses on your left 6

7 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Luuk Kramer IJburg Block 14 Bert Haanstrakade DK Amsterdam Block 14 lies at a unique location within the Haveneiland grid, consisting of streets and closed blocks Due to the slight change of angle of the site, the block has a trapezium shape Taking into account the scant depth and the exceptionally positive conditions along the edges, it was logical to situate as many houses as possible along the banks and to allocate maximum openness to the inner area As a consequence, the houses profit fully from their situation on the IJ Water and also have a direct relationship with the more sheltered, semi-public inner area The court is connected to the quay via a spacious platform stairway The difference in height at the site offers the possibility of generating extraordinary transitions between public and private areas In addition to single-family dwellings with access to gardens, an unusual type of house has been introduced: the 'Zwebo', which is an abbreviation of the Dutch for 'floating single-family upstairs apartment' photo: Luuk Kramer m² Structural engineer Contractor DKV en ABT Smit's Bouwbedrijf IJ-Delta Ontwikkeling (Smit's Bouwbedrijf, Era Bouw, Bouwfonds, Ymere) DKV 7

11 Sky Dome KNSM-laan LG Amsterdam The only real high building on the KNSM-island is that of Wiel Arets, and with 60m it is not even that high It was one of the last additions to the new housing district of the island and appears to be four towers in one since the block has been cut The different apartment types have simply been stacked and each stacked tower is fixed to the other with balconies The facades are not of stone, but anthracite colored concrete that was cast into rubber elements of 2 by 2 meter The same façade-system was used in apartment-tower De Hoge Heren in Rotterdam 1995 Wiel Arets s Wilma Bouw MI_MOA Bus 42 to KNSM Eiland and tram 10 to Azartplein 11

15 Single family houses Borneokade AW Amsterdam These are 28 single family houses, all situated on the ground floor They all have their entrance on the street side (Borneokade) but when you walk by, you would hardly see that there are indeed 28 front doors Half of them lay behind the first row of houses, reached through a sort of alley These houses have their backside on the waterfront of the canal Go see the satellite images to get an idea of the composition 1999 Van Herk & de Kleijn Bouwbedrijf MJ de Nijs Naomi Take the Borneo Island bus number 43 from Amsterdam Central Station, and walk all the way to the end of the island 15

16 Jan Schaeferbrug Piet Heinkade HC Amsterdam A 285 meter long bridge over the IJ canal links Oostelijke Handelskade to the new housing area on Java-island The logic location for the bridge was the place, where 1934 warehouse The Zwijger stood Instead of demolishing the old warehouse, the client decided to pierce the bridge through the building The bridge is designed for cars, bicycles and pedestrians The separate roads for these traffic types differ in inclination The underside of the bridge has an asymmetric curving shape, and its legs are set wide apart in the water Parts of the road-deck are detachable to allow incidental passing of large boats Project is public! 23 photo: Luuk Kramer photo: Luuk Kramer Lootsbuurt Lootstraat AH Amsterdam The Lootsbuurt in Amsterdam is a neighbourhood of 19th century worker's housing The project is split between two locations on the Jacob van Lennepstraat, one on a corner of the Lootsstraat and the other further along the street Both buildings are flanked by 19th century buildings The corner block contains 20 social housing units of which four are suited for wheelchair users and five are designed for supervised accommodation The corner of the block is open allowing contact between the street and the block's enclosed interior The dwellings are accessed via open double-height galleries that give the project a bright and airy feel While the building attaches itself to its neighbours by adopting their 19th century fenestration and detailing, it distinguishes itself by the subtle execution of these parts of the design The end product represents a contemporary addition that shows respect for its surroundings photo: Roos Aldershoff Structural engineer hvdn architecten Vink Bouw Nieuwkoop De Alliantie Huizen hvdn-architecten 23

25 photo: Maarten Helle Studio Thonik Weesperzijde 79d 1091 EJ Amsterdam In this inner city courtyard the Amsterdam-based studio for visual communication, Thonik, has its atelier and house The two storey volume is wrapped by a polyurethane coating, a material that mergers the volume into a homogeneous building without details To emphasise on the 'plastic' effect of the material, originally bright orange had been chosen for the colour, a favourite colour from the palette of the users, Studio Thonik, graphic designers But, the inhabitants of the surrounding houses claimed they experienced serious nuisance from this colour Quote: ''The doctor had ordered me not to be preoccupied with it anymore It has given me so much private misery Orange does something to you It does not really hurt the eyes, it injures the mind" Part of the interior is designed bij Richard Hutten 2001 Main designer, Interior architect MVRDV Richard Hutten Thonik MI_MOA You can visit the inner courtyard throughout the day Tram 3, subway 51, 53, 54 stop at Wibautstraat 25

36 photo: Jeroen Musch photo: Jeroen Musch Huys Afrika Residential Building Vemenplein AT Amsterdam The new Huys Afrika residential building has been designed as a periscope that overlooks the old Afrika warehouse in the direction of the river, with respect to the cruise ship terminal The entrance to the new Afrika warehouse has been formed by maximizing the integration of living and working, as well as the creation of a mix between old and new The façade is made of rust-coloured, prefabricated concrete elements that form a 'fabric' in order to emphasise the sculptural properties of the volume The northern façade, which faces the river, has been tilted up and is in its entirety constructed of glass This double façade forms a barrier to the noisy ships Due to the disturbing noise levels from the adjacent railway line, the other façades are to be made of extra thick glazed elements The newly placed columns interact with the existing ones in a manner by which the building's proportions are retained, thus doing justice to this monument photo: Jeroen Musch KCAP s & Planners Heijmans IBC Property Development KCAP 36
