3 photo: José Manuel Alorda photo: José Manuel Alorda MAS Nieuwpoortkaai The MAS (Museum aan de Stroom) is located on an island (het Eilandje) in the heart of the old harbour close to the city centre It will house 3 different collections (the Volkskundemuseum, the National Maritime museum and partly Het Vleeshuis) The new museum was a winning design of an open architecture competition, a 60m high tower with stacked exhibition spaces, in total 10 storeys Each level is twisted 90 degrees to form a giant spiral This glazed space becomes a vertical galleria Elevators guide the visitors to the top of the building in a journey through the history of Antwerp and through the panoramas of the city On the upper floor a restaurant, a conference room and a sky deck are situated Square, docks and tower are designed to form one continuous space for exhibitions and events The stacked concept refers to the old warehouses where goods were packed and stacked Now Antwerp's history, traditions, artefacts, stories and objects are stacked in one new warehouse photo: Dirk Verwoerd Project is public! 4 photo: Serge Brison photo: Serge Brison Hoopnatie Timmerwerfstraat The area of this project looked chaotic because it lacked design unity Due to the existing relationship between a number of large buildings, the perspective had already been determined by and large Conix s felt compelled to put an end to this mish-mash of building styles Their final organization of the buildings lies between urban compacting and spatial perception The project comprises three buildings The triangular space between the three buildings is turned into a private courtyard Conix s used lines more or less everywhere to unite the designs of these buildings and thus create a unique and recognizable character for the entire complex Façades were interrupted in places to make incidences of light and air possible Because of this design choice, the surrounding streets has become more airy and spacious, in contrast to the enclosed and massive surrounded buildings photo: Serge Brison Floor area/size m² Conix s Himmos Conixs 4

6 De Kaai Plantinkaai A long, narrow site on the river quay has been divided into two zones: a strip along the dividing wall containing the services and a long, freely sub divisible living area overlooking the river The living area has been organized along to the dramatic view: a twelve-metre-long panorama window follows the slow-moving current; a large floor-to-ceiling window frames the view on the river bend There are four floors of apartments with the top apartment designed as a duplex with roof terrace The curved volume of the apartment block is clad with horizontal wooden siding 1992 Neutelings Riedijk jpmm 6

7 Maison Guiette Populierenlaan 32 Antwerp Guiette House designed by Le Corbusier's in 1926 is considered one of his most unknown works It's an early and classic example of the "International Style" and built in 1927 as the residence and studio of the painter René Guiette The building has a cellar, ground floor, first and second floor, and a roof terrace on the third floor (at the back) The large window on the top of the front facade is from the studio of the painter It was once inhabited by Belgian fashion designer Ann Demeulemeester who supposedly despised architecture tourists gazing at her house, although she had restored the house in 1985 by Georges Baines and built an extension next to it 1927 Le Corbusier Réné Guiette jpmm photo: José Manuel Alorda Pre-metro/tram: There is a stop nearby called "Antwerpen Olympiade" Just a small walk away Car: in the southern suburbs of the city, 100 metres from the motorway A12 7

8 photo: Bram Goots photo: Bram Goots London Tower Londenstraat 60 The London Tower is the northern pendant of the south-gate formed by the new Law Court, it marks the beginning of the 'Leien' This landmark was created in a well-considered way The result is a building which volumetrically integrates itself on the 'Leien' and restores the original street line A raw dark-grey stone is the main material used for the façade and is brought to life by the carried pattern of window openings The structure and materials of these elements evoke the image of water drops and link the building to the nearby harbour The verticality of the tower is emphasized by the sculptural excision between the tower and the lower volume of the adjacent office building The London Tower is a contemporary example of a high-rise building and illustrates the qualities of urban density The project engages in a dialogue with the local urban landscape on an architectural and urban level and at the same time, it creates a new strong visual identity for the skyline of Antwerp photo: Bram Goots Floor area/size m² Conix s Immpact Vastgoed Conixs 8

9 photo: CSM photo: CSM Antwerp Theatre Square Theaterplein At one time or another, we all pay a visit to an open air market Since the redevelopment of Antwerp's theatre-square market, it has been possible to shop there even on a rainy day The square has been provided with a colossal free-standing steel canopy, more than 20m in height and with a surface area of ca 70 x 70m Despite the powerful overall visual impression it makes, a careful look at the canopy will reveal that it is comprised of relatively simple steel components Another immediately apparent element of the square are the fire escape stairs of the Municipal Theatre Following hot-dip galvanisation, the stairs were assembled on the ground floor, and the handrails in turn attached Then, the entire stairs 'measuring 12m in length) were hoisted and attached to the canopy construction Almost 1000 tonnes of steel were employed in realising the project photo: CSM Project is public!
