16 photo: Jan Bitter Gallery Borzo Keizersgracht EJ Amsterdam The historic Amsterdam canal house on Keizersgracht 516, which dates back to 1882, used to be an average canal house It now accommodates Gallery Borzo, which opened in January 2006 after a period of careful reconstruction and restoration When the building was assigned for reconstruction in October 2004, its previous structural alternations were rather disguised At the beginning of the 20th century the building was converted into a warehouse In 1932 it was once again remodeled, this time into a bookstore with various routing paths A hanging steel construction was added during this period to allowed the façade to be opened up andallow more natural light into the deep and narrow bookstore A vertical column containing the book elevator spatially balanced these mostly horizontal elements m² Wiel Arets s WielAretss photo: Jan Bitter 16
17 photo: Kruunenberg en photo: Kruunenberg en Canal houses on Java Island Lamongracht / Brantasgracht 1019 RK Amsterdam In this project, both popular tastes and the demand for individualisation were answered by choosing this particular type of housing and commissioning several architects This canal house is designed for co-habitation by two independent households The 'duo-home' has a common living room, kitchen and bathroom and two individual living areas of equal size In order to make the residence suitable for various forms of 'co-habitation' the floors are well connected to each other and yet can be used independently The entry to the house in situated in the side street However, the residents can also gain entry via the garden and reach their own individual living areas without having to pass through the common rooms The living room on the ground floor can be accessed directly from the canal; hence this space is also suitable for other uses The house features outer walls of red brick and wood window frames In the lower level where the common spaces are situated, the casings are finished wit photo: Kruunenberg en Project is not public! m² Kruunenberg Van der Erve en Stichting Bedrijfspensioenfonds voor de Bouwnijverheid, Amsterdam Kruunenberg_en 17
18 photo: Iwan Baan Synagogue annex Community Centre Zuidelijke Wandelweg RK Amsterdam SeArch designed the new synagogue annex community center of the Liberal Jewish Congregation in Amsterdam The unstable relationship between Judaism and other religions and the dispersal of the Jewish diaspora have hindered the evolution of a recognized architectural style, this, in contrast to the strong and self-conscious personal Jewish identity Ceremonial traditions and rituals present few recognizable reference points in a synagogue s physical expression And while the identity of a church or a mosque is carved in stone, it is usually conspicuous in its absence with regard to synagogues In this shul the classical parallel installation is reduced to only the heart with the shaft between Biema (pulpit) and Aron Hakodesj (cabinet with the Torah), pointing to the east, being Jerusalem This traditional installation, which was used in the old synagogue for years, as well as the use of daylight are the main principles for the design photo: Iwan Baan search MI_MOA Telephone: +31 (0) or info@verbondeu The building is located on a small island in the water that separates the Zuidelijke Wandelweg and the famous cemetery Zorgvlied In about one and a half year, the buildings on the west side will be demolished to create a larger space for water and a newly constructed dock, perpendicular to the Zuidelijke Wandelweg The already constructed bridge to the island built leads to the entrance on the ground floor 18
