3 photo: architour photo: Allard van der Hoek The Whale Baron G A Tindalplein TW Amsterdam The Whale is one of three big meteorites which have landed in-between the lowrise row houses on the Islands of Borneo and Sporenburg Thanks to its sculptural shape, this building by Frits van Dongen is a real landmark Inside are 194 apartments and 1100 m2 office and retail space Underneath is a large parking garage with 179 places The traditional closed block (100 by 60 m) has been transformed by lifting the two, so the public space flows through underneath Inside the block is a private garden, designed by West 8 The apartments are accessed from galleries running along the inner façade Floor area/size m² Main designer, Landscape architect Contractor Supplier Structural engineer de Architekten Cie West 8 Heijmans NedZink NTV Pieters Bouwtechniek Ontwikkelingsmaatschappij New Deal MI_MOA photo: Luis Monteiro 3

4 photo: Maarten Helle Studio Thonik Weesperzijde 79d 1091 EJ Amsterdam In this inner city courtyard the Amsterdam-based studio for visual communication, Thonik, has its atelier and house The two storey volume is wrapped by a polyurethane coating, a material that mergers the volume into a homogeneous building without details To emphasise on the 'plastic' effect of the material, originally bright orange had been chosen for the colour, a favourite colour from the palette of the users, Studio Thonik, graphic designers But, the inhabitants of the surrounding houses claimed they experienced serious nuisance from this colour Quote: ''The doctor had ordered me not to be preoccupied with it anymore It has given me so much private misery Orange does something to you It does not really hurt the eyes, it injures the mind" Part of the interior is designed bij Richard Hutten 2001 Main designer, Interior architect MVRDV Richard Hutten Thonik MI_MOA You can visit the inner courtyard throughout the day Tram 3, subway 51, 53, 54 stop at Wibautstraat 4

5 IJ tower Oostelijke Handelskade DN Amsterdam This seventy meters high, 20 stories apartment tower is situated on the dam towards the KNSM Island, in the former docklands, east of the centre of Amsterdam The tower has a regular facade composition with a diagonal window pattern Several 'holes' in the building give it a strong sculpturally and generate a variety of 20 different dwelling types The tower has been sculpted differently at each side The building works as an orientating element in the new dockland area The 3 stories plinth of the tower consists of a fitness club, roof garden, commercial retail spaces and a parking garage Floor area/size m² Structural engineer Contractor Neutelings Riedijk Ingenieursbureau Zonneveld Dura Vermeer Blauwhoed Eurowoningen, Rotterdam Naomi Tram 10 passes by Stop at Van Eesterenlaan 5

6 photo: Maarten Helle UVA Dek Sarphatistraat GD Amsterdam These student houses are pretty small: 35 to 55 m2 To compensate their lack of physical space they get a large window on the street The windows are set, not in a conventional matrix, but move from side to side The ground floor is reserved for commercial space and large entrée halls with big glass façades The choice of materials is based upon the old monumental canal-facing warehouses The glass windows are enclosed with metal, a modern version of the wooden frames surrounding the windows on the canal houses The brick is painted black This way the façade is perceived as a flat stretch instead of separate bricks This is an effect often seen at the canals in Amsterdam Floor area/size m² Claus en Kaan en Woonstichting De Key, De Principaal, Amsterdam MI_MOA tram 10 and 7 and subway 53 stop at Weesperplein 6

7 photo: Maarten Helle Housing Sarphatistraat Sarphatistraat GD Amsterdam These apartments are designed as units with a large open space with open kitchen and enclosed bathroom They are built for the visiting scholars of the University of Amsterdam The only fixed elements are the service ducts, thus providing a large freedom in the configuration of the service-elements Each apartment had one huge oval window, cut out of the concrete These prefabricated concrete elements are made out of polyester-concrete Floor area/size m² VMX s Universiteit van Amsterdam MI_MOA tram 10 and 7 and subway 53 stop at Weesperplein 7

9 photo: architour Borneo Sporenburg Bridges Panamakade AX Amsterdam Two red steel bridges span the water between the residential islands Sporenburg and Borneo The pedestrian bridge is very high and designed as an architectural walk, taking pedestrians to a height where they have a spectacular view over the surrounding patio houses and also allowing sail boats to access a small marina The lower bridge at the opposite end of the harbour is made for disabled persons, buggies and bikes photo: Matthijs Borghgraef Project is public! 2000 Landscape architect West 8 Ontwikkelingsbedrijf Amsterdam Naomi 24/7 in public space The nicest way to go to the Eastern Docklands, is to take the boat from the Central Station to the Java-island It leaves from behind the central station, at pier 7 It's a free ride, and takes about 10 min, to the head of the Java-island From there it's about 15 min walking to the KNSM-island and 20 min to Sporenburg and Borneo 9

10 photo: architour photo: City of Amsterdam, Archives Borneo Sporenburg C van Eesterenlaan JK Amsterdam A total of 2500 dwellings have been built on the two former harbour peninsulas Borneo and Sporenburg The area was covered with a carpet of low-rise/high-density back-to-back patio houses, interrupted by 3 large landmark buildings Various architects each designed a type of patio house, which were grouped in small clusters and re-appear in several places on the islands The main challenge was to develop a typology in which a small patio provides daylight and private outdoor space for the inhabitants photo: City of Amsterdam, Archives Project is public! 1997 Urban planner West 8 City of Amsterdam Naomi The nicest way to go to the Eastern Docklands, is to take the boat from the Central Station to the Java-island It leaves from behind the central station, at pier 7 It's a free ride, and takes about 10 min, to the head of the Java-island From there it's about 15 min walking to the KNSM-island and 20 min to Sporenburg and Borneo You can also take tram 10 or 26 from Central Station Or rent a bike 10

16 photo: Luuk Kramer photo: Luuk Kramer Hermitage Amsterdam Amstel DP Amsterdam photo: Luuk Kramer The Amstelhof building, which was built in the 17th century as a home for the elderly, has been renovated and refurbished to house a branch of the Hermitage Museum from St Petersburg The Hermitage has a collection of three million works of art, far more than can ever be shown in St Petersburg Pieces from the collection were first shown in the Nieuwe Kerk After several successful exhibitions of Russian art, the idea was born to establish an annex of the Hermitage here in Amsterdam Besides fine arts, this centre of Russian culture is used as a venue for concerts and symposiums, houses a library, a documentation centre and shops Project is public! 19 Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer Strawinskylaan XZ Amsterdam The new offices for this law firm are located in an existing freestanding building It's located between the new Amsterdam WTC, a dynamic cluster of new towers, and a residential neighbourhood of modest mid-century villas The project was initially only office interior design and grew into an architectural project The existing building had a strongly articulated façade of tinted glass, bow windows, reverse ziggurat corners, and pale cladding While impractical to reclad, it was important to renovate the base building architecture to some degree to improve its presence whilst emphasising its new life The architectural modifications concentrated on a clearly delineated T section through the building plan which encompasses all of the public environment of the building The new façade, whilst being much more transparent, has an integral strength in its finish and construction, respecting the structural matrix of the existing building Floor area/size m² David Chipperfield s Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer Naomi Take subway/tram or train to 'Amsterdam Zuid WTC', and walk for another 2 minutes 19

22 photo: Ger van der Vlugt photo: Ger van der Vlugt Library of special collection Oude Turfmarkt GC Amsterdam The complex houses the University of Amsterdam's museum and the special collection belonging to the university library All other library components are located in the grounds of the former hospital (Binnengasthuis) backing onto it The entire site has listed status The crux of the plan is an interior street which gives the complex a new main structure This central passage runs parallel with Oude Turfmarkt and is also to be reached from the old hospital grounds by way of a solar court This last-named feature is to endow the cluttered rear of the buildings on the side of the Binnengasthuis grounds with an ambience worthy of a traditional court or hofje The solar court doubles as a glass case for displaying the obliquely placed back section of the building a physical reminder of the site s medieval land division photo: Jeroen Musch Project is public! 24 Hubertushuis Plantage Middenlaan DB Amsterdam Van Eyck's work lies in line with that important tradition of humanitarian modernism central to 20th century Dutch architecture The 6-storey Hubertus House cannot be viewed in isolation, although its social success is clearly a result of the way its particular design was carried out It is concerned with the spirit and the establishment of a comfortable scale for the building of this type and size (an open 'home' for single parents and their children) with the creation of a non-stressful environment, in a block that seems to say 'house' Like so many of Van Eyck's schemes, it was a cooperative effort with contributions from Hannie van Eyck and Theo Bosch in particular ( text from Dennis Sharp Twentieth Century ure: a Visual History p363) Project is public! 25 Apolloschool Willem Witsenstraat AZ Amsterdam In the 1980s, Hertzberger designed the Apollo School, a combination of two different schools with two different educational systems He organized all the classrooms around an internal space, an amphitheatre-like organization that has been wholeheartedly emulated since There are smaller corridors and blocked-out areas that allow students to work outside the classrooms The 1990s were a time of shrinking budgets for school construction in the, said Hertzberger To stretch the money, he spent it on creating cohesive organization This tactic was also a response to the wave of immigration: by organizing space well, students of all languages and levels of understanding could feel comfortable photo: Wing-Ni Lam 1983 Herman Hertzberger Wing-Ni 25

26 photo: Adrian Welch Six Dwellings in Borneo Eiland Scheepstimmermanstraat WT Amsterdam The Borneo project is a large scale intervention, in the central harbour at Amsterdam The Six Dwellings are a very small part of it EMBT depart from the existing planning conditions; a house on each side of the street and they transformed it into a single long house that faces both streets The first hypothesis is the abstract planning; a single long house from street to street Then, the small street that existed in the planning becomes an empty house EMBT wanted to investigate the Dutch tradition about single room constructions From this abstract hypothesis, a much more intuitive way of working with living conditions is developed The architect like to play with abstract dimensions that later will become living conditions photo: Adrian Welch Project is public!
