2 photo: architour photo: City of Amsterdam, Archives Borneo Sporenburg C van Eesterenlaan JK Amsterdam A total of 2500 dwellings have been built on the two former harbour peninsulas Borneo and Sporenburg The area was covered with a carpet of low-rise/high-density back-to-back patio houses, interrupted by 3 large landmark buildings Various architects each designed a type of patio house, which were grouped in small clusters and re-appear in several places on the islands The main challenge was to develop a typology in which a small patio provides daylight and private outdoor space for the inhabitants photo: City of Amsterdam, Archives Project is public! 1997 Urban planner West 8 City of Amsterdam Naomi The nicest way to go to the Eastern Docklands, is to take the boat from the Central Station to the Java-island It leaves from behind the central station, at pier 7 It's a free ride, and takes about 10 min, to the head of the Java-island From there it's about 15 min walking to the KNSM-island and 20 min to Sporenburg and Borneo You can also take tram 10 or 26 from Central Station Or rent a bike 2

3 Jan Schaeferbrug Piet Heinkade HC Amsterdam A 285 meter long bridge over the IJ canal links Oostelijke Handelskade to the new housing area on Java-island The logic location for the bridge was the place, where 1934 warehouse The Zwijger stood Instead of demolishing the old warehouse, the client decided to pierce the bridge through the building The bridge is designed for cars, bicycles and pedestrians The separate roads for these traffic types differ in inclination The underside of the bridge has an asymmetric curving shape, and its legs are set wide apart in the water Parts of the road-deck are detachable to allow incidental passing of large boats Project is public! 4 Hoogtij KNSM laan LL Amsterdam At the southern entrance of the Java-eiland, the large housing project of the Swiss architects Diener and Diener, is divided into two parts and links Java (west) and KNSM (eastern part of the island) with each other Both are made out of red bricks, but differ in shape and size West is the larger of the two: Langhaus Langhaus has large gaps on each side of the block It is 8 stories high The lower part, on the east side, is called Hofhaus It is a square shaped block, with a restaurant and ateliers on the ground floor This project raised very different reactions: some find it the little ugly duckling of the island, others think this is a masterpiece since it is very quiet photo: Maarten Helle 2000 Diener & Diener HelleBeelden Tram 10 stops at the Azartplein 4

5 Piraeus Levantkade MJ Amsterdam The masterplan for the conversion of KNSM-island consists of a central boulevard, along which large residential blocks are aligned, interspersed with some old buildings, such as a former harbour canteen Housing block Piraeus, recognizable from afar due to its sloping roof, measures 170 by 57 meters It comprises 330 apartments, commercial spaces, an underground parking garage and two enclosed public spaces It is wrapped around a 19th century office building, which now contains appartments The south side of Piraeus is 4 stories high, the north 8 The block counts 150 different types of apartments, 95 % of which are social housing All façades are different in rhythm, details and openings 1994 Main designer, Artist Contractor Hans Kollhoff Rapp + Rapp Arno van der Mark Slokker Bouwmaatschappij bv De Doelen, woningbouwvereniging, Amsterdam MI_MOA Tram 10 to Azartplein Bus 41 / 42 to Azartplein 5

6 Sky Dome KNSM-laan LG Amsterdam The only real high building on the KNSM-island is that of Wiel Arets, and with 60m it is not even that high It was one of the last additions to the new housing district of the island and appears to be four towers in one since the block has been cut The different apartment types have simply been stacked and each stacked tower is fixed to the other with balconies The facades are not of stone, but anthracite colored concrete that was cast into rubber elements of 2 by 2 meter The same façade-system was used in apartment-tower De Hoge Heren in Rotterdam 1995 Wiel Arets s Wilma Bouw MI_MOA Bus 42 to KNSM Eiland and tram 10 to Azartplein 6

8 IJ tower Oostelijke Handelskade DN Amsterdam This seventy meters high, 20 stories apartment tower is situated on the dam towards the KNSM Island, in the former docklands, east of the centre of Amsterdam The tower has a regular facade composition with a diagonal window pattern Several 'holes' in the building give it a strong sculpturally and generate a variety of 20 different dwelling types The tower has been sculpted differently at each side The building works as an orientating element in the new dockland area The 3 stories plinth of the tower consists of a fitness club, roof garden, commercial retail spaces and a parking garage Floor area/size m² Structural engineer Contractor Neutelings Riedijk Ingenieursbureau Zonneveld Dura Vermeer Blauwhoed Eurowoningen, Rotterdam Naomi Tram 10 passes by Stop at Van Eesterenlaan 8

9 photo: Julie Fuchs photo: Julie Fuchs Piet Hein Tunnel Service Building C van Eesterenlaan 1011KD Amsterdam The Piet Hein Tunnel is part of the continuing development of the eastern area of Amsterdam and is situated in the midst of several new building projects This project consists of two small service buildings These technical constructions each have a concrete core, enveloped by an asymmetrical skin of perforated steel plates and tilted roof planes In conjunction with the general asymmetry, this emphasizes the 'non-architectural', object-like character of the inaccessible service structures Rather than real, lived-in buildings, these structures function as urban signposts for the tunnel entrances These entrances are characterized by the simple application of profiled aluminium cladding Steel beams are placed crossways over the sober concrete tunnel mouths (text from architect's website) photo: Julie Fuchs Floor area/size m² UNStudio Stedelijk Beheer Amsterdam / Projectbureau Piet Hein Tunnel jfuchs Bus 41 or 43 and tram 10 or

13 photo: Het Funen Park photo: Het Funen Park The Funen Park Funenpark AK Amsterdam This is an innovative urban development concept that combines living and working in high city-centre densities with sufficient green space on Het Funen, a former industrial zone on the edge of Amsterdam s city centre It is a concept that incorporates the qualities of diverse typologies: the construction of perimeter blocks along two sides, with a novel interpretation of the garden city model to their rear The perimeter blocks shelter the inner grounds and simultaneously serve as a noise baffler for the railway behind them The inner space is composed of a park landscape with a great diversity of smaller building types, each with a distinctive identity and programme These Hidden Delights were designed by various architects The contributing architects are: de Architekten Cie, De architectengroep, NL s, Geurts en Schulze, Claus en Kaan architecten, DKV Architekten, Architektenburo L Lafour & R Wijk, Van Sambeek en Van Veen architecten photo: Gemeente Amsterdam Project is public! 14 The Funen Funenpark NL-1018 AK Amsterdam This housing project is part of the larger urban masterplan 'The Funen Park', also designed by de Architekten Cie The urban plan in characterized by an inner area with sufficient green space, a park-like area with smaller building typologies This inner-space is surrounded by these large scale mixed use buildings The peripheral construction protects the inner area and also serves as a sound barrier against noise from the railway Four small gates, which adjoin the entrance halls, and one large gateway provides access to and view of the inner area The peripheral construction was designed by a single architect The contrast between the peripheral construction and the inner area enlivens the whole complex 2005 Contractor de Architekten Cie Heijmans Heijmans MI_MOA 14
