10 photo: DKV en photo: DKV en The Meander Carolina MacGillavrylaan XE Amsterdam The student accommodation building is a part of KCAP s urban plan for University grounds in east Amsterdam Projects by various architectural offices, including DKV, Claus & Kaan, Gigon & Guyer, 24H and HvdN, will be realized here The City of Amsterdam, the Organisation for Scientific Research and the University of Amsterdam plan to turn this Science Park into an international centre of knowledge A number of university buildings are on the northern section of the parcel, with housing along the southern edge in a series of 5 volumes that are called the Archipelago DKV designed a meander: the 200m street front is interrupted and 2 courtyards are formed, allowing access to the buildings 3 Green garden courts are created on the railway side The strict programme is entirely oriented to the relatively noise-free side and comprises a mixture of student units, two and four-room apartments, living/working houses, and a day nursery photo: DKV en Project is not public! 2007 Contractor DKV en Heijmans DuWo Bjorn_Utpott Science Park Amsterdam is located just to the east of Amsterdam, on the north-east section of the Watergraafsmeer polder in the borough of Oost/Watergraafsmeer From railway stations Amstel and Muiderpoort travelling time is less than 10 minutes by bus 40, bicycle or taxi Bus 40 goes approximately every 15 minutes 10

17 photo: Jeroen Apers photo: Jeroen Apers The 4th Gymnasium Stavangerweg AX Amsterdam In 2007 it was decided that the secondary school 'Het 4e Gymnasium' will be located in the new district of Amsterdam's Houthavens to the west of the centre Until that time, for the coming 5-10 years, this interim building is used To help it fit in with the adjacent temporary container student housing and so it can be used afterwards at different places, it was built using a modular system To create an enclosed inner space in this open area, it's been built around a courtyard The sports facilities with a gym and a large fitness suite are behind the main school This way, all the qualities of the Houthavens district are well used As well as classrooms, the 4000m2 building has modern facilities, such as a media centre and a large auditorium The façade has 2 elements that help intensify the character of the building; the flat aluminium façade of the inner courtyard, which also runs through to the outside, and the wooden façade which has been developed more spatially and in depth photo: Jeroen Apers Project is not public! m² hvdn architecten Esprit-Groep + Stadsdeel Westerpark Amsterdam Apers 17

19 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Bjorn Utpott Parkrand Dr Colijnstraat CP Amsterdam The neighbourhood Geuzenveld is located in the western garden cities of Amsterdam There is plenty of public space available but most of these green spaces lack grandeur The project is regarded to be a 'key-operation within the urban renewal of Geuzeveld-Slotermeer The building should provide an iconographic quality to the neighbourhood which it was lacking before The housing block is situated at the edge of a park and consists out of 5 towers, positioned on a deck, carrying a two level roof plate The positioning of the towers provides a clear view from all apartments to the park Because of the holes, or empty spaces in-between, the dwellings behind the big block also still have a view on the park The title of the project - Parkrand means park-edge photo: Bjorn Utpott Project is not public! 28 photo: Adrian Welch Six Dwellings in Borneo Eiland Scheepstimmermanstraat WT Amsterdam The Borneo project is a large scale intervention, in the central harbour at Amsterdam The Six Dwellings are a very small part of it EMBT depart from the existing planning conditions; a house on each side of the street and they transformed it into a single long house that faces both streets The first hypothesis is the abstract planning; a single long house from street to street Then, the small street that existed in the planning becomes an empty house EMBT wanted to investigate the Dutch tradition about single room constructions From this abstract hypothesis, a much more intuitive way of working with living conditions is developed The architect like to play with abstract dimensions that later will become living conditions photo: Adrian Welch Project is public! 34 photo: Mieke Vullings photo: Mieke Vullings Overhoeks Information Centre Buiksloterweg 5d 1031 CC Amsterdam This small highlight glasshouse on a floating pontoon is located opposite the Central Station on the north bank of het IJ, the water that separates the north and south of Amsterdam The glasshouse, which houses the Overhoeks Information Centre, has a first storey, so that an extra surface area is created for the users The objective of the information centre is to provide information for the future inhabitants of the new district Overhoeks (former Shell site), which is to be realised in the coming years The name Overhoeks refers to the wayward diagonal orientation of the Shell tower at site The new district will combine functions as living, working and leisure Around 2200 apartments and penthouses will be developed, aswell as offices and workingplaces in new and historic buildings, restaurants, terraces, a hotel and a public parc at the banks of het IJ The new Filmmuseum and Tolhuistuin will become the cultural attractions of this new part of Amsterdam at a unique location photo: Mieke Vullings Project is public!
