3 Beurs van Berlage Damrak ZJ Amsterdam The Beurs van Berlage (stock exchange of Berlage) is a milestone in the history of modern architecture It is build in the same period as Amsterdam s Centraal Station and the State Museum, but what is really special about the Beurs, however, is that 80% of it is authentic The Beurs van Berlage was built by Hendrik Petrus Berlage ( ) for the Municipality of Amsterdam to accommodate all forms of stock trading Construction started in 1898 and was completed in 1903 It was Berlage s first really large commission and it would make him world famous The building was constructed on a reclaimed tract of land alongside the Amstel river, where trading ships used to moor photo: Fernando Miguel García Martín Project is public! 1903 Hendrik Petrus Berlage MI_MOA Cafe opening hours: Monday - Saturday: 10-18h Sunday: 11-18h Tel: (0) , Beurs van Berlage Café: (0) In the Main Hall of the Beurs van Berlage exhibitions are hosted on a regular basis For an overview of current and coming exhibitions see their website Take a train, tram or bus to Amsterdam Centraal Station Follow the signs to the Centrum exit and walk towards Dam Square (southern direction) On your lefthandside you can already see the Beurs van Berlage, a large orange-brick building with several towers etc 3

4 photo: Bastiaan Jongerius photo: Bastiaan Jongerius Two Glass Houses Eerste Goudsbloemdwarsstraat JV Amsterdam All houses in the Jordaan (a former working-class neighbourhood in the centre of Amsterdam) are very small, and so is the site of this smart urban plot At this petite area the two glass houses have an open floor plan with the service-zone in the centre The large transparent façade and small elevations and see-through views in the interior, give the apartments a broad perspective The living room is situated at the front When the large glass folding elements in the façade are opened, the room transforms into a free outside-space The perforated wooden panels provide a mobile sunscreen The ground floor has a high story and is divided into a souterrain for storage and a bel-etage with the actual entrances Together with the segmented façade and articulation of space the two apartments correspond to their old neighbours, in a both a modern and traditional way photo: Bastiaan Jongerius m² Structural engineer Contractor Building costs consultant Bastiaan Jongerius ABT Houtman, Gouda Swets en van Voorden Niels Bon, Amsterdam bastiaanjongerius From Central Station take bus 18 or 21 (direction East), stop at Buiten Oranjestraat 4

9 photo: architour photo: City of Amsterdam, Archives Borneo Sporenburg C van Eesterenlaan JK Amsterdam A total of 2500 dwellings have been built on the two former harbour peninsulas Borneo and Sporenburg The area was covered with a carpet of low-rise/high-density back-to-back patio houses, interrupted by 3 large landmark buildings Various architects each designed a type of patio house, which were grouped in small clusters and re-appear in several places on the islands The main challenge was to develop a typology in which a small patio provides daylight and private outdoor space for the inhabitants photo: City of Amsterdam, Archives Project is public! 1997 Urban planner West 8 City of Amsterdam Naomi The nicest way to go to the Eastern Docklands, is to take the boat from the Central Station to the Java-island It leaves from behind the central station, at pier 7 It's a free ride, and takes about 10 min, to the head of the Java-island From there it's about 15 min walking to the KNSM-island and 20 min to Sporenburg and Borneo You can also take tram 10 or 26 from Central Station Or rent a bike 9

11 photo: Adrian Welch Six Dwellings in Borneo Eiland Scheepstimmermanstraat WT Amsterdam The Borneo project is a large scale intervention, in the central harbour at Amsterdam The Six Dwellings are a very small part of it EMBT depart from the existing planning conditions; a house on each side of the street and they transformed it into a single long house that faces both streets The first hypothesis is the abstract planning; a single long house from street to street Then, the small street that existed in the planning becomes an empty house EMBT wanted to investigate the Dutch tradition about single room constructions From this abstract hypothesis, a much more intuitive way of working with living conditions is developed The architect like to play with abstract dimensions that later will become living conditions photo: Adrian Welch Project is public! 18 photo: Kruunenberg en photo: Kruunenberg en Canal houses on Java Island Lamongracht / Brantasgracht 1019 RK Amsterdam In this project, both popular tastes and the demand for individualisation were answered by choosing this particular type of housing and commissioning several architects This canal house is designed for co-habitation by two independent households The 'duo-home' has a common living room, kitchen and bathroom and two individual living areas of equal size In order to make the residence suitable for various forms of 'co-habitation' the floors are well connected to each other and yet can be used independently The entry to the house in situated in the side street However, the residents can also gain entry via the garden and reach their own individual living areas without having to pass through the common rooms The living room on the ground floor can be accessed directly from the canal; hence this space is also suitable for other uses The house features outer walls of red brick and wood window frames In the lower level where the common spaces are situated, the casings are finished wit photo: Kruunenberg en m² Kruunenberg Van der Erve en Stichting Bedrijfspensioenfonds voor de Bouwnijverheid, Amsterdam Kruunenberg_en 18

21 photo: architour photo: Matthijs Borghgraef Café-restaurant OPEN Westerdoksplein AZ Amsterdam An old turn track bridge on Westerdokskade in Amsterdam, dating from 1922, has been transformed into a café-restaurant by Dutch architect Pi de Bruijn / De ArchitektenCie A simple, transparent volume was placed on top of the old bridge The modernist box has an all-round folding glass façade, giving visitors a view of the surrounding harbour and water from every angle Inside, two separate units containing the kitchen, toilets and bar are placed freely within the volume, giving the interior a light and open character photo: Maarten Helle Project is public!
