3 photo: architour photo: Allard van der Hoek The Whale Baron G A Tindalplein TW Amsterdam The Whale is one of three big meteorites which have landed in-between the lowrise row houses on the Islands of Borneo and Sporenburg Thanks to its sculptural shape, this building by Frits van Dongen is a real landmark Inside are 194 apartments and 1100 m2 office and retail space Underneath is a large parking garage with 179 places The traditional closed block (100 by 60 m) has been transformed by lifting the two, so the public space flows through underneath Inside the block is a private garden, designed by West 8 The apartments are accessed from galleries running along the inner façade Project is not public! 4 photo: Maarten Helle photo: Naomi Schiphorst Studio Thonik Weesperzijde 79d 1091 EJ Amsterdam In this inner city courtyard the Amsterdam-based studio for visual communication, Thonik, has its atelier and house The two storey volume is wrapped by a polyurethane coating, a material that mergers the volume into a homogeneous building without details To emphasise on the 'plastic' effect of the material, originally bright orange had been chosen for the colour, a favourite colour from the palette of the users, Studio Thonik, graphic designers But, the inhabitants of the surrounding houses claimed they experienced serious nuisance from this colour Quote: ''The doctor had ordered me not to be preoccupied with it anymore It has given me so much private misery Orange does something to you It does not really hurt the eyes, it injures the mind" Part of the interior is designed bij Richard Hutten photo: Naomi Schiphorst Project is not public! 2001 Main designer, Interior architect MVRDV Richard Hutten Thonik MI_MOA You can visit the inner courtyard throughout the day Tram 3, subway 51, 53, 54 stop at Wibautstraat 4

5 photo: Maarten Helle photo: Naomi Schiphorst UVA Dek Sarphatistraat GD Amsterdam These student houses are pretty small: 35 to 55 m2 To compensate their lack of physical space they get a large window on the street The windows are set, not in a conventional matrix, but move from side to side The ground floor is reserved for commercial space and large entrée halls with big glass façades The choice of materials is based upon the old monumental canal-facing warehouses The glass windows are enclosed with metal, a modern version of the wooden frames surrounding the windows on the canal houses The brick is painted black This way the façade is perceived as a flat stretch instead of separate bricks This is an effect often seen at the canals in Amsterdam photo: Naomi Schiphorst Project is not public! 6 photo: Luis Monteiro photo: Luis Monteiro Nescio Bridge Buitenkerkerweg 1095 KL Amsterdam This cycle and pedestrian bridge is the longest in the, spanning the busy Rijn Kanaal in the IJburg district of Amsterdam The result of a close collaboration between architects and engineers, the bridge provides a vital connection for residents of IJburg, a suburb built on recently reclaimed land east of the city, with the Diemerpark at the mainland With its slender form, the bridge slots elegantly into its surroundingsthe bridge has a clear span of 170 m, providing the 10 cm clearance necessary for boats on the canal below The long approaches at either end have e a shallow gradient for cyclists and other bridge users Curved in plan, the bridge is designed to sit elegantly within the reclaimed landscape and to respect its unique ecological habitats A unique feature of this first suspension bridge in the is that the deck is suspended on one side only It is also Wilkinson Eyre s first project in the country photo: Bjorn Utpott 2005 Structural engineer Wilkinson Eyre s ARUP City of Amsterdam Bjorn_Utpott 24/7 Take tram 26 to IJburg, or tram 9 to Diemen 6

7 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Silodam Silodam AL Amsterdam The Housing Silo is situated on the IJ River, at the tip of the pier, next to two former grain warehouses (silos) that have been converted into housing The 157 apartments, business units and public spaces, in the Housing Silo, are compressed within a 10 storey high and 20 meters deep urban envelope The apartments, rental and owner in different sizes, are stacked, legible on the façade, each of which is expressed differently The aim of mixing functions spatially (commercial units and semi-public spaces were not to be confined automatically to ground level but distributed throughout the complex) has not been realized All commercial units have been gathered in a clearly recognisable volume At the west side is a shared roof terrace for residents, and small boats can moor between the columns underneath photo: Bjorn Utpott Project is not public! 9 photo: Museum Het Schip photo: Museum Het Schip Museum Het Schip Oostzaanstraat WG Amsterdam Museum Het Schip is the architecture and design museum about the Amsterdam School and social housing It is located in the world famous workers palace 'Het Schip' by architect Michel de Klerk in Amsterdam Along the Spaarndammerplantsoen in Amsterdam, three monumental public housing complexes are designed by famous architect Michel de Klerk The most expressionistic block is nicknamed The Ship and belongs to the top of the Amsterdam School architectural movement of the early twentieth century The unconventional building exudes an air of festivity and is a true sculpture of bright orange bricksthe Ship is still inhabited and the museum is located in different parts of the building Every hour a guided tour (often in Dutch) leads around the building, to visit three other parts of the museum Next to Dutch tours there is an English tour at 15h Groups above 10 persons can always make a reservation for an extra guided tour photo: Museum Het Schip 1921 Contractor Michel de Klerk Klaas Hille Eigen Haard dirkverwoerd tue-sun: 11:00-17:00 9

10 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd UNStudio Tower Gustav Mahlerlaan 1082 PP Amsterdam The UNStudio Tower is located on the South Axis in Amsterdam, which connects Schiphol Airport to the major business areas of Amsterdam South The Tower office typology incorporates considerations about required office layouts, and floor organizations that maximize views and access to light Four inset voids were introduced on the façade of the building to allow for the internal clustering of offices, and to help bring daylight deeper into the floor Each of the inset voids is characterized by a different colour, providing varying identities to individual spaces throughout the building The horizontal stripes on the façade are made of white aluminum panels which vary in size in relation their position on the façade A primary function of these bands is to protect the office space from direct sunlight, whils simultaneously allowing extensive daylight penetration into the floors photo: Dirk Verwoerd Project is not public! 12 photo: Matthijs Borghgraef photo: architour Westerdok Island Westerdoksdijk 1013 AE Amsterdam Westerdokseiland is a peninsula between Westerdok harbour and Het IJ which used to house a railway yard and was redeveloped into a residential area between 2007 and 2009 The master plan concept, designed by OD 205, consists of perimeter blocks with communal courtyards The long narrow site was divided into four blocks between a straight quay along the west side, and a curving wall along the east side facing the IJ A different team of architects developed each of the four courtyard blocks The architects involved are among others: Meyer & Van Schooten, Architekten Cie en Heren 5 (La Grande Cour, 2007); and MVRDV and Jeroen Schipper en (VOC Cour, 2009) photo: Matthijs Borghgraef 2004 Urban planner OD 205 MI_MOA From Central Station by foot (5 minutes) or by bus 48 in the direction of Sloterdijk, bus stops on Westerdoksdijk 12

13 photo: architour photo: architour IJdock IJdok 1013 MM Amsterdam The masterplan for the IJDock, a mixed-use complex of 89,000 square metres, was devised by Dick van Gameren and Bjarne Mastenbroek of SeArch The process started with a volume of maximum size and height, which then was excavated to create individual buildings Sightlines, views of the surrounding neighbourhoods, transportation access and the on-water location influenced the design of the sculptural volume Planning of the individual buildings was handed off to Claus en Kaan en for the Palace of Justice, Jan Bakers and Ben Loerakker for the Hotel, and Zeinstra van Gelderen for the Water Police Offices, apartments and office spaces A marina provides space for boat slips and improves water-based travel and connectivity photo: Matthijs Borghgraef 2012 Main designer, Dick van Gameren search Roderick 13

15 photo: Richard Zeinstra photo: Ronald Tilleman The Edge Gustav Mahlerlaan LA Amsterdam Amsterdam's Zuidas area is rapidly emerging as one of Europe's most significant business districts, with excellent connections to the public transport, cycle route network, and new high speed train station The project is the first of this scale which will achieve a BREEAM-NL Excellent sustainability certificate The work space is organized around a grand 15-storey atrium, a window animated by circulation bridges, lift cores, and office activity The base of the atrium is activated by a grand café, a restaurant, exhibition spaces and conference facilities The atrium is the lung of the building, ventilating the office space The shape of the building allows north light into 60% of the offices East, west and south walls have smaller openings in a dense load bearing structure; on the south, photovoltaic cells shade the openings (source: PLParchitecture) photo: Ronald Tilleman Project is not public! 16 photo: Thea van den Heuvel photo: Thea van den Heuvel Energy-neutral Community School Houthavens Revaleiland Amsterdam The building - situated in Houthavens, a former dockland district in Amsterdam - is a compact, robust block built up of prefabricated brickwork facade elements with a finely detailed rosette relief, with deep reveals and with glazed openings in varied rhythms It is topped by a cornice which integrates with tall, narrow windows The building projects a welcoming air, with its wide oriel on the street side, inward-curving entrances, the double height loggia, large areas of glazing and double height outward-opening doors on the ground floor The smart use of materials in combination with the flexible, compact interior organization generates a highly sustainable building The HVAC and lighting systems play an important part in this respect A mass with a large thermal accumulative capacity (concrete core activation) reduces the peak energy requirement The residual energy demand is met by rooftop photoelectric panels, the net result being an energy-neutral building photo: Thea van den Heuvel Marlies Rohmer City of Amsterdam Marlies_Rohmer_s_Urbanis ts 16
