5 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Bicycle Flat Stationsplein AB Amsterdam The 100 metre long bicycle flat at the Central Station was built to temporarily store thousands of bikes during the period that old bicycle-stands had to be removed during the large renovation of the surroundings at Central Station The building was built over water to maximise land-use (or in this case: water-use) It consists out of three slightly sloping parking decks There is a small surveillance facility in the centre of this quayside structure The bicycle flat was supposed to be closed and removed in 2004 In 2006 it still exists Now the flat is planned to be removed in 2009 There are plans to built a second one photo: Maarten Helle Project is public! m² VMX s Amsterdam City Council MI_MOA 24/7 Next to Central Station 5

15 photo: Mieke Vullings photo: Mieke Vullings Overhoeks Information Centre Buiksloterweg 5d 1031 CC Amsterdam This small highlight glasshouse on a floating pontoon is located opposite the Central Station on the north bank of het IJ, the water that separates the north and south of Amsterdam The glasshouse, which houses the Overhoeks Information Centre, has a first storey, so that an extra surface area is created for the users The objective of the information centre is to provide information for the future inhabitants of the new district Overhoeks (former Shell site), which is to be realised in the coming years The name Overhoeks refers to the wayward diagonal orientation of the Shell tower at site The new district will combine functions as living, working and leisure Around 2200 apartments and penthouses will be developed, aswell as offices and workingplaces in new and historic buildings, restaurants, terraces, a hotel and a public parc at the banks of het IJ The new Filmmuseum and Tolhuistuin will become the cultural attractions of this new part of Amsterdam at a unique location photo: Mieke Vullings Project is public! 19 photo: Luuk Kramer photo: Luuk Kramer Hermitage Amsterdam Amstel DP Amsterdam photo: Luuk Kramer The Amstelhof building, which was built in the 17th century as a home for the elderly, has been renovated and refurbished to house a branch of the Hermitage Museum from St Petersburg The Hermitage has a collection of three million works of art, far more than can ever be shown in St Petersburg Pieces from the collection were first shown in the Nieuwe Kerk After several successful exhibitions of Russian art, the idea was born to establish an annex of the Hermitage here in Amsterdam Besides fine arts, this centre of Russian culture is used as a venue for concerts and symposiums, houses a library, a documentation centre and shops Project is public! 24 photo: Maarten Helle Cancer Center Amsterdam De Boelelaan HZ Amsterdam The Cancer Center Amsterdam (CCA) is part of and built in the direct vicinity of the VU Medical Centre (VUmc) It is an academical cancer expertise centre for research and treatment The CCA is financed mainly through private means and therefore built their semi-permanent housing with prefabricated building units that look like stacked containers The building has 7 storeys, each covering some 1425 m2 The whole complex was built within a year The team of project members supported the CCA by delivering the building system and their services for cost-price Project is not public! 25 Milos Housing Carolina MacGillavrylaan XA Amsterdam This housing complex Milos is part of a larger mixed-used development around the Science Park Amsterdam, located in the neighbourhood Watergraafsmeer The Science Park is transformed into an international knowledge centre, and next to new educational buildings and related companies, the area is completed with housing Milos is the most western building with a plinth of 4 to 5 layers, and a 45m high tower The complex gives the impression of a modern castle, surrounded by water Pedestrians and cyclists enter the building by passing a bridge The closed inner courtyard is furnished with wooden floors Because of the situation next to the railway tracks, the building has a double façade: a glass screen is placed in front of the thermal skin, and serves as a sound barrier Project is not public! 26 photo: José F García Martín photo: José F García Martín Eerste Openluchtschool Cliostraat Amsterdam The Eerste Openluchtschool (First Open Air School) in Amsterdam is a model example of Modernist architecture, of the Dutch 'Nieuwe Zakelijkheid' (New Objectivity) to be exact Johannes Duiker projected a concrete and glass building that shows proudly its glass-free corners thanks to the white-painted cantilevered structure The school is a pure cubic volume rotated 45º degrees to the courtyard block where it is located The only addition to the cube is the gym area in the ground plan Project is not public! 1930 Johannes Duiker Jose_Garcia photo: José F García Martín 26
