3 photo: architour photo: City of Amsterdam, Archives Borneo Sporenburg C van Eesterenlaan JK Amsterdam A total of 2500 dwellings have been built on the two former harbour peninsulas Borneo and Sporenburg The area was covered with a carpet of low-rise/high-density back-to-back patio houses, interrupted by 3 large landmark buildings Various architects each designed a type of patio house, which were grouped in small clusters and re-appear in several places on the islands The main challenge was to develop a typology in which a small patio provides daylight and private outdoor space for the inhabitants photo: City of Amsterdam, Archives Project is public! 1997 Urban planner West 8 City of Amsterdam Naomi The nicest way to go to the Eastern Docklands, is to take the boat from the Central Station to the Java-island It leaves from behind the central station, at pier 7 It's a free ride, and takes about 10 min, to the head of the Java-island From there it's about 15 min walking to the KNSM-island and 20 min to Sporenburg and Borneo You can also take tram 10 or 26 from Central Station Or rent a bike 3

4 Piraeus Levantkade MJ Amsterdam The masterplan for the conversion of KNSM-island consists of a central boulevard, along which large residential blocks are aligned, interspersed with some old buildings, such as a former harbour canteen Housing block Piraeus, recognizable from afar due to its sloping roof, measures 170 by 57 meters It comprises 330 apartments, commercial spaces, an underground parking garage and two enclosed public spaces It is wrapped around a 19th century office building, which now contains appartments The south side of Piraeus is 4 stories high, the north 8 The block counts 150 different types of apartments, 95 % of which are social housing All façades are different in rhythm, details and openings 1994 Main designer, Artist Contractor Hans Kollhoff Rapp + Rapp Arno van der Mark Slokker Bouwmaatschappij bv De Doelen, woningbouwvereniging, Amsterdam MI_MOA Tram 10 to Azartplein Bus 41 / 42 to Azartplein 4

5 Hoogtij KNSM laan LL Amsterdam At the southern entrance of the Java-eiland, the large housing project of the Swiss architects Diener and Diener, is divided into two parts and links Java (west) and KNSM (eastern part of the island) with each other Both are made out of red bricks, but differ in shape and size West is the larger of the two: Langhaus Langhaus has large gaps on each side of the block It is 8 stories high The lower part, on the east side, is called Hofhaus It is a square shaped block, with a restaurant and ateliers on the ground floor This project raised very different reactions: some find it the little ugly duckling of the island, others think this is a masterpiece since it is very quiet photo: Maarten Helle 2000 Diener & Diener HelleBeelden Tram 10 stops at the Azartplein 5

6 photo: Museum Het Schip photo: Museum Het Schip Museum Het Schip Oostzaanstraat WG Amsterdam Museum Het Schip is the architecture and design museum about the Amsterdam School and social housing It is located in the world famous workers palace 'Het Schip' by architect Michel de Klerk in Amsterdam Along the Spaarndammerplantsoen in Amsterdam, three monumental public housing complexes are designed by famous architect Michel de Klerk The most expressionistic block is nicknamed The Ship and belongs to the top of the Amsterdam School architectural movement of the early twentieth century The unconventional building exudes an air of festivity and is a true sculpture of bright orange bricksthe Ship is still inhabited and the museum is located in different parts of the building Every hour a guided tour (often in Dutch) leads around the building, to visit three other parts of the museum Next to Dutch tours there is an English tour at 15h Groups above 10 persons can always make a reservation for an extra guided tour photo: Museum Het Schip Project is public! 1921 Contractor Michel de Klerk Klaas Hille Eigen Haard dirkverwoerd tue-sun: 11:00-17:00 6

8 photo: Jeroen Apers photo: Jeroen Apers Crystal Court Willem van Weldammelaan KT Amsterdam Crystal Court is located in Buitenveldert, next to the Gijsbrecht van Aemstelpark To keep a connection between the neighbourhood and the park and not to be a barrier, it was designed as an accumulation of square volumes with big openings in between As a result of the concept, all apartments have different plans and fascinating views through the building The basin around the building floats through the open spaces between the pile of housing volumes, marking the entrances with a clear relation between inside and outside These entrances can also be seen as the winter garden as it is designed as a hothouse photo: Matthijs Borghgraef Floor area/size m² TANGRAM Architekten Hillen & Roosen Apers 8

10 photo: Jan Bitter photo: Jan Bitter Bloembollenhof Arsenaal 2141 NE Vijfhuizen Vijfhuizen is a small town near Amsterdam Airport Schiphol S333 designed 56 houses adjacent to this village The density of the housing, the small plots and the intense mixture of different cost categories implied that traditional row housing proved insufficient to meet this challenge A simple series of houses have been designed and systematically located in an innovative way Through arranging the housing plots in a 'regular irregularity', the desired atmosphere has been created of cosy village-like density with a remarkable contemporary openness S333 has designed the scheme with the template of a rural farmyard in mind - or at least, the idea of clusters of barns, stables and outbuildings around a farmhouse The interior layout also varies from open-plan models with ceilings that are twice the typical height to more conventional, compartmentalised dwellings The façades have been wrapped by vertically grooved hard wood (Cumaru) siding and ribbed steel plating in equal proportion photo: Jan Bitter Floor area/size m² Main designer, Urban planner Landscape architect Services engineer Structural engineer Contractor S333 Dok en Hosper Adviesburo Nieman Constructie-adviesbureau Steens Thunnissen Bouw Gemeente Haarlemmermeer & Dura Bouw Franks Public transport: From Schiphol Airport, take bus 300 to Haarlem After 15 minutes, get out at Vijfhuizen and walk 5 minutes to Bloembollenhof By car: Take the A9 to Haarlem Before you reach Haarlem, take exit N205 (Hoofddorp-West) Then follow the blue signs to Vijfhuizen, following the N205 After 3,2 km, take a right turn at Stelling and after that, take the second exit at the roundabout (go straight ahead) After 100 m, the project will be on your left hand 10

11 photo: Olivier van den Hoven Cube Housing Overblaak MH Rotterdam The cube house (pole- or tree house) is designed as an abstract tree, the total complex (Blaak Heights) a wood (village) The village is like a safe oasis where several functions could take place: small-scale business, shops, school and a children s playground downstairs (promenade level) and living in the cube houses upstairs The strong interaction between the private (upstairs) and the public is characteristic for this situation The inhabitant has a great view because of the sloping windows The complex is in fact a pedestrian bridge, crossing a traffic artery This was an idea of the municipality at the time Piet Blom was asked to furnish this bridge The cube house could be called an architectonic experiment, in which Blom has considered form, aesthetics and spatial effects of greater importance than functionality and practical purpose Living in a cube (the top) reminds of a tree house which is accessible through the pole (the trunk) An archetypical way of living really photo: Dirk Verwoerd Project is public! 12 photo: João Morgado photo: João Morgado Ciboga Terrain Bloemsingel BZ Groningen The urban concept developed by the municipality extends the network of routes and views through the site The municipality's desire to establish 'openness' through an equal relationship between landscape and building was central to the success of the plan However this ambition had to be negotiated with the market requirements for programmatic density This led the municipality to create the concept of 'schotsen' A 'schots' is considered a compact building block eroded internally by new forms of semi-public space Thirteen 'schotsen' are distributed across the site in an open landscape that operates as a filter zone between the city centre and 19th century housing extensions S333 have developed Schots 1 and 2, which forms a strategic link in the city's ecological corridor linking the canal with an existing urban park, as the first phase of the project on the original Europan 3 site photo: João Morgado Services engineer S333 DGMR ING Vastgoed, Amstelland Ontwikkeling, Bouwbedrijf MoesBV, Amvest Vastgoed and Nijestee Vastgoed JMMM 12

13 photo: Christian Richters photo: Christian Richters Block 16 Koetsierbaan Almere Block 16 is part of the masterplan designed by OMA for a new prestigious city centre in Almere The autonomous expressive block reacts on two conditions: the billowing end marks as a kind of gatekeeper and the building fits in with the right angled grid of the adjacent glass high-rise housing blocks The clock is sited on a basement car park (design OMA) serving as a pedestal The elevated deck level is half occupied by the common entrance and the storerooms The other part is a gym which continued on the parking level below where it ends in the fitness-café, an autonomous pavilion The design of Block 16 is largely based on an analysis of tunnel formwork constructions Implementation of this mode of construction is financially attractive in developing major housing projects Variation in the length of adjacent tunnels breaks the monotonous structure The result is a wavy facade surface providing the block with a dynamic quality (Maarten Willems for René van Zuuk Architekten) Floor area/size m² Contractor Roof & facade consultant Structural engineer René van Zuuk Architekten Dura Vermeer Metaalbouw TSV Pieters Bouwtechniek Ontwikkelingscombinatie Almere Hart cv Rene_van_Zuuk photo: DJ Hoogerdijk 13

14 photo: João Morgado photo: João Morgado Waterwijk Ypenburg Stiemensvaart ZE Den Haag Hagen Island offers an attractive image, for consumption by a broad range of people Clearly, the project does not aspire to appeal to just an elite group of artistic souls 'receptive' to such housing Almost half the houses are for the rental sector, while the rest are for sale at prices of between 35 and 55 million guilders One section of the neighbourhood is now inhabited and signs of domesticity are already visible - flower pots, paved paths, lace decorations MVRDV styling, it would seem, has not influenced residents' preferences The large sliding glass doors on each floor reveal the interiors ranging from curving plastic bedroom kitsch to Scandinavian timber cosiness The greatest quality of these houses is just how smoothly they accommodate the everyday Personal touches do not detract from the overall picture, as so often happens with housing schemes that aspire to the title ure photo: Rositsa Andreeva MVRDV Amvest Vastgoed Amsterdam JMMM go from The Hague to the neighbourhood of Ypenburg Hageneiland 14
