2 photo: Snøhetta photo: Statsbygg Opera House Kirsten Flagstads plass 1 N-0150 Oslo The New Opera House has 3 main parts First the 'Front of House': the public areas located in the building s western section These include the main foyer, and 2 auditoriums The foyer is a grand, open room with a variety of lighting conditions and views to the surroundings This space is characterised by simple use of materials and minimal details Secondly the Back of House : these are the production areas of the building with workshops, storage areas, rehearsal rooms etc The architecture is functionally appropriate, the exterior façade is composed of metal panels Last part is the Roofscape: describes the building s monumental character The horizontal and sloping plane of the roof provides the opera with an unusually dramatic expression, quite different from the surrounding buildings Clad in white stone, and it s details will provide a holistic and symbolic character to the building while also allowing for a variety of experiences as one moves past it photo: Snøhetta Floor area/size m² Client Snøhetta Statsbygg Snohetta 2

3 National Museum Bankplassen Oslo The main building, designed by Christian Heinrich Grosch, was completed in 1830 as a division office for Norges Bank It was adapted and extended by Sverre Fehn before opening as a museum in 2008 The building is a juxtaposition of classicism and modernist architecture - an encounter between Grosch and Fehn, 's most important architects of the 19th and 20th centuries respectively 2008 Sverre Fehn 3

4 Astrup fearnley museum Strandpromenaden Oslo Astrup Fearnley Museum was built as part of Tjuvholmen Icon Complex ( ) and was designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop in collaboration with Narud-Stokke-Wiig (Oslo) The project is set in a wonderful position at the outermost point where the city stretches into the Fjord; it is a big shelter for art over three buildings integrated in the landscape, the natural destination of the promenade from the City Hall along the harbor quay The Museum starts outside: the park is an organic game of canals, bridges and lawns where sculptures of the Selvaag collection are displayed in the nature and in the Piazza Once inside the visitors experience the temporary exhibition of the Astrup Fearnley Museet in a big double-height space, where natural light is filtered from a glass roof Renzo Piano 4

5 DnB NOR Headquarters Trelastgata Oslo In 2003, MVRDV, together with Norwegian firms Dark and a-lab, won the competition for the Bjørvika waterfront development and designed a dense urban master plan along Nyland Allé, the Oslo Barcode, that will be developed and realised by OSU in phases The international Norwegian financial institution DnB NOR decided to concentrate their twenty office locations currently dispersed over the city in the Barcode In 2007, the master plan team was commissioned by developer OSU to design the urban concept A new cluster of three volumes and a common basement with a 3,000m2 underground concourse, which interlinks the three buildings of the bank, was developed MVRDV was commissioned as architect for the central building and co-responsible for the concourse 2013 MVRDV 5

6 Doblouggården store Biskop Gunnerus' gate Oslo German modernist Erich Mendelsohn, who with Rudolf Emil Jacobsen built Oslo's propulsively curved Doblouggården department store of 1933 The building is located in main part of the city, close to the Central Station 1933 Erich Mendelsohn 6

7 Deloitte Bygget Dronning Eufemias gate Oslo Deloitte Bygget, or Isfjellet is inspired from a breaking glacier according to the architects Isfjellet is the third building from the west been built in OperaKvarteret, a line of 11 high-rise buildings facing the fjord and the new Oslo Opera House The two lowest storeys of the building will have shops and refreshment areas From the 2nd floor to the 11th floor there will be offices The 12th floor to the 15th floor will hold a canteen and conference rooms with adjacent green roof terraces The building's design has developed from the point of intersection of the building's internal room design, the external limitation and the desire to create a building that is sculptural in form The building complies with the barcode principles, but in addition it introduces an intersection of surfaces on the horizontal and vertical planes The creation of interplay with the Station Common's landscape has been of great importance Snøhetta 7

8 DnB NOR Bygg A Dronning Eufemias gate Oslo Bygg A is the main building in the DnB NOR clauster Its a pixelated building, designed by MVRDV The project aims to create synergy and identity for the firm translating social and democratic culture into the design and making the space an enviable working facility MVRDV's building is conceived as a steel?rack? which permits adaptation to the flexible nature of the organisation The steel rack is wrapped in a stone skin, which adopts Norwegian environmental standards It appears as a rock, a strong shape within the boundaries of the Barcode The niches of this rock provide space for vegetation growth: the positioning of the pixels creates roof gardens or outside areas for every floor At street level the building volume is opened by sheltered entrance zones, and intersected by a public passage leading to the Oslo Central Station The pixelated design allows this specific response whilst being highly efficient and flexible 2013 MVRDV 8
