8 photo: Richard Jansen photo: Richard Jansen Public Library Amsterdam Oosterdokskade DL Amsterdam The Public Library is the central one of three large new buildings on the restructured Oosterdokseiland, near the Central Station The main shape of the building is attuned to the surroundings: both the apartments to the west of the library and the street to the eastmust receive enough daylight At the same time, situated as it is beside the open waters of the Oosterdok, the library had to contribute to an attractive skyline A raised plinth offers a refined transitional area between the upper and lower floors, and the reading and study rooms resemble terraces, arranged around large voids The top floor accommodates the library theatre and conference rooms Project is public! m² Jo Coenen City of Amsterdam Naomi photo: Richard Jansen Every day from 1000 to 2200 h From the Central Train station in Amsterdam, it's about 5 min walking For more information on the developments of this Island, take a look at 8

9 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Bjorn Utpott Parkrand Dr Colijnstraat CP Amsterdam The neighbourhood Geuzenveld is located in the western garden cities of Amsterdam There is plenty of public space available but most of these green spaces lack grandeur The project is regarded to be a 'key-operation within the urban renewal of Geuzeveld-Slotermeer The building should provide an iconographic quality to the neighbourhood which it was lacking before The housing block is situated at the edge of a park and consists out of 5 towers, positioned on a deck, carrying a two level roof plate The positioning of the towers provides a clear view from all apartments to the park Because of the holes, or empty spaces in-between, the dwellings behind the big block also still have a view on the park The title of the project - Parkrand means park-edge photo: Bjorn Utpott Developer MVRDV Kristal Het Oosten Bjorn_Utpott The Geuzenveld neighbourhood is west of the city centre of Amsterdam Tram line 13 takes you from the Central Train Station to the neighbourhood Geuzenveld Stop at Dhr H Colijnstraat You can also take bus number 21 and 192 from the centre Stop at Dhr H Colijnstraat 9

11 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst The Funen Funenpark NL-1018 AK Amsterdam This housing project is part of the larger urban masterplan 'The Funen Park', also designed by de Architekten Cie The urban plan in characterized by an inner area with sufficient green space, a park-like area with smaller building typologies This inner-space is surrounded by these large scale mixed use buildings The peripheral construction protects the inner area and also serves as a sound barrier against noise from the railway Four small gates, which adjoin the entrance halls, and one large gateway provides access to and view of the inner area The peripheral construction was designed by a single architect The contrast between the peripheral construction and the inner area enlivens the whole complex 2005 Contractor de Architekten Cie Heijmans Heijmans MI_MOA photo: Naomi Schiphorst 11

14 photo: DKV en photo: DKV en The Meander Carolina MacGillavrylaan XE Amsterdam The student accommodation building is a part of KCAP s urban plan for University grounds in east Amsterdam Projects by various architectural offices, including DKV, Claus & Kaan, Gigon & Guyer, 24H and HvdN, will be realized here The City of Amsterdam, the Organisation for Scientific Research and the University of Amsterdam plan to turn this Science Park into an international centre of knowledge A number of university buildings are on the northern section of the parcel, with housing along the southern edge in a series of 5 volumes that are called the Archipelago DKV designed a meander: the 200m street front is interrupted and 2 courtyards are formed, allowing access to the buildings 3 Green garden courts are created on the railway side The strict programme is entirely oriented to the relatively noise-free side and comprises a mixture of student units, two and four-room apartments, living/working houses, and a day nursery photo: DKV en 2007 Contractor DKV en Heijmans DuWo Bjorn_Utpott Science Park Amsterdam is located just to the east of Amsterdam, on the north-east section of the Watergraafsmeer polder in the borough of Oost/Watergraafsmeer From railway stations Amstel and Muiderpoort travelling time is less than 10 minutes by bus 40, bicycle or taxi Bus 40 goes approximately every 15 minutes 14

15 photo: Luuk Kramer photo: Luuk Kramer Albatros Johan van Hasseltweg WV Amsterdam The area around the van Hasseltweg in Amsterdam North is to be developed, setting large urban scale projects amongst the existing small 'garden-village' housing estates The planning activity is concentrated around the location of the new North/South axis metro station and the Albatros is the first of the projects to come on stream The most important challenge in designing the Albatros was reconciling the confrontation between the scales of the new large developments and that of the surrounding housing In order that the building would not act as a huge barrier within the neighbourhood, it was decided to 'break it up' by dividing it into four tower-like fins arranged on a base or plinth This plinth contains all the commercial and community orientated services and is equal in height to the neighbouring structures The 130 dwellings are housed in the four fins above The building as a whole has the appearance of a large scale sculpture Contractor hvdn architecten Bouwbedrijf De Waal De Principaal hvdn-architecten photo: Luuk Kramer 15

16 photo: Piotr Krajewski photo: Piotr Krajewski Parkside Apartments Am Park Berlin Germany The Parkside Apartments are so named due to their exclusive location directly on the Tiergarten park in the centre of Berlin The 10 storey apartment building forms the northern border of a new hotel, office and residential development, namely Beisheim Center on Potsdamer Platz The building accommodates 36 apartments The high degree of flexibility in the design of the floor plans - spanning traditional to flowing room concepts forms the basis for all apartments, as does the constant presence of the surrounding green space All apartments have balconettes and generous loggias The 9th-floor apartments are maisonettes, the upper floors of which provide access to the roof terrace with its far-reaching views over the Tiergarten park and the city of Berlin Public facilities such as cafes, restaurants and shops are located on the ground floor The main entrance to the apartment block is located in the centre of these facilities (text from website architects) m² David Chipperfield s IMMAGO Real AG pkrajewski_pl photo: Piotr Krajewski 16

19 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd La Grande Cour Westerdokseiland EH Amsterdam The apartment building La Grande Cour was the first completed building on the newly regenerated Westerdokseiland The redevelopment is part of the large-scale development along the south bank of the IJ The urban plan by Peter Defesche (OD205) made a clear distinction between the buildings along the IJ (high-scale) and on the other hand the city centre side (small-scale) La Grande Cour is the most southern of the three urban blocks The architecture of the south block is allocated to three architects Each office was given a courtyard and a periscope tower to develop During the planning process continual coordination between the three schemes was paramount in order to ensure a unified architectural outcome, similarly a high level of attention was given to the architectural details The three courtyards (cours) each contain a more individual architecture They all have varying heights, the IJ side (eastern side) is higher than the western edge photo: Dirk Verwoerd Main designer, MVSA s de Architekten Cie Heren 5 architecten City Cour Combination VOF dirkverwoerd This recently developed area lies just west of Central train station, about 5 minutes walking along side of the IJ 19

21 photo: Philip Driessen photo: Philip Driessen Ripperdahof Ruys de Beerenbrouckstraat BP Amsterdam In the 1950s, the architect Van Eesteren designed an urban development plan for part of Geuzenveld: characteristic L-shape residential blocks, with public park-like courtyards Now, 50 years later, these blocks need to be replaced due to their poor condition and inadequate facilities Ripperdahof is a new residential block that will replace one of the original blocks: a U-shaped complex that encloses a garden more strongly than previously The outside of this block, with (closed) walls without balconies or galleries, has a more or less urban character Only the dwellings on the ground floor can be accessed from the surrounding streets The interior, by contrast, is more open and transparent; wide, open galleries with a good view of the public spaces border the common courtyard They provide access to the apartments, but also serve as balconies In every house it is also possible to enclose this balcony with glass folding doors photo: Philip Driessen 2006 Teeken Beckers en BV Het Oosten Kristal BV Amsterdam Teeken_Beckers_en_BV This project is located near Haarlemmerweg and Eendrachtspark 21

22 photo: Primabeeld photo: Primabeeld IJburg College Pampuslaan Amsterdam A good example of a combination project is the IJburg College with housing in Amsterdam On a spacious plot that was initially only intended to house a sports hall, LIAG proposed that it also could be used for a housing programme This made it possible to satisfy the city planning conditions that prescribed a substantial high building With the extra housing programme of approximately 80 dwellings, 'extra ground value' was created on a plot that had an initial book value of 'nil' It was a conscious choice in the project on IJburg to give the complex an identity The dwellings are characterised by their balconies and the lower height between floors The theme 'stacked city" had been used on IJburg, then the buildings would naturally have been better characterised using a different architecture The project consists of a school building for secondary education, a sports complex on the roof and 23 dwellings Part of the parking level is semi-sunken under the school and the schoolyard Public access unknown! m² Main designer, Interior architect Building physics consultant Contractor Services engineer Structural engineer LIAG architects Ateliers DGMR HBB groep Schreuder Groep Van Rossum Raadgevende Ingenieurs HEVO dirkverwoerd photo: Primabeeld 22

23 photo: Stefan Mueller photo: Stefan Mueller De Loodsen Piet Heinkade HC Amsterdam In the series of new buildings along the IJ harbour, there is a sub-plan called De Loodsen which forms the link between the western and eastern sides of this urban development The ensemble comprises six towers in eleven layers with a slab of five layers along the harbour Two of the towers - apartment blocks are the corners of the plan on the city side This is a highly urbanised context in which both corner towers have been developed as shells, thus giving the letting company maximum flexibility in dividing up each floor The towers are worked out as separate, but at the same time related, buildings They differ from each other in terms of their position, volume and the rhythm of the windows However, they are related in expression: the horizontal concrete railing and the eloquent brickwork The robust character of these buildings harks back to the warehouse buildings which have determined the appearance of the area for so long m² photo: Stefan Mueller Wingender Hovenier en VOF Loodsen (Hopman Interheem en Ymere), Amsterdam winhov 23

24 photo: Maarten Helle photo: Maarten Helle Office Claus & Kaan Krijn Taconiskade HW Amsterdam The private accommodation of Claus and Kaan Amsterdam is an integral part of the building construction which will form block 49A on IJburg, the new Amsterdam neighbourhood which Claus and Kaan have been involved in designing The concrete office block is rectangular and without any frills It is bare architecture in which the structure is integrated into the façade and in which the interior fully exposes the structure In the façade, a regular pattern of large windows has been introduced which offer a picturesque view of the IJmeer and the Dutch cloudscapes The design of the office building is quite simple: it is a stack of spacious open-plan floors One side of the building contains all the facilities including the elevator and a gentle, broad staircase which is finished off in grey like the rest of the building and where the only accent is the reflection from the stainless steel of the banister photo: Maarten Helle m² Claus en Kaan en Claus en Kaan architecten HelleBeelden 24

26 photo: Paulien Borst photo: Jan Bitter Huys Azie Jollemanhof GW Amsterdam Along the banks of the river IJ in Amsterdam, the former dockland has been transformed into a high-density residential and working area On the site known as De Pakhuysen (The Warehouses) along 'Oostelijke Handelskade', old warehouses and new blocks form a differentiated complex of interlocking buildings that preserve the views through to the IJ The buildings stand on a shared base containing a car park, and the entrances are set along a narrow, oblong public space As well as drawing up the urban development plan, KCAP designed the car park and two of the four sculptural blocks Building B, known as 'Huys Azië' (House Asia), consists of two sections A large, L-shaped brick volume which rests on a low-rise block that gives the impression of being a stripped-down old warehouse Both sections are in fact new, and as a combination of two architectural volumes with different dimensions and materials they fit well with the character of the buildings on the rest of the site , Urban planner KCAP s & Planners Oosterveem, Amsterdam KCAP photo: Paulien Borst 26

27 photo: Paulien Borst photo: Paulien Borst De Opgang Tussenmeer DS Amsterdam 'De Opgang', situated at one of the important crossings in the urban extension masterplan of Van Eesteren for Amsterdam, combines several different functions in one building: 79 dwellings, a church, child day care facilities and a parking garage The aim was to create a unity between these different functions while still showing their individual identity The church is placed on a platform which gives the impression that it is hovering above street level Due to its formal differentiation and slate materialisation, the church still appears as an independent and recognisable building in the whole ensemble The platform on which the church stands is filled with water to create a basin, thus giving feeling that the church is floating The church hall opens to the park and the water, whereas the meeting hall opens to the perpendicular streets Instead of a classic introverted space for the church presents an open space which is orientated to the public domain photo: Paulien Borst Project is public! m², Urban planner KCAP s & Planners NL-development bv KCAP 27

32 photo: architour photo: architour IJdock IJdok 1013 MM Amsterdam The masterplan for the IJDock, a mixed-use complex of 89,000 square metres, was devised by Dick van Gameren and Bjarne Mastenbroek of SeArch The process started with a volume of maximum size and height, which then was excavated to create individual buildings Sightlines, views of the surrounding neighbourhoods, transportation access and the on-water location influenced the design of the sculptural volume Planning of the individual buildings was handed off to Claus en Kaan en for the Palace of Justice, Jan Bakers and Ben Loerakker for the Hotel, and Zeinstra van Gelderen for the Water Police Offices, apartments and office spaces A marina provides space for boat slips and improves water-based travel and connectivity photo: Matthijs Borghgraef Project is public! 2012 Main designer, Dick van Gameren search Roderick 32
