9 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Bjorn Utpott Vinoly tower Mahlerlaan LS Amsterdam The Viñoly tower is part of the Mahler 4 complex on the Amsterdam Zuidas (south-axe) This is the first project Viñoly completed in Europe Next to this tower, the complex consists out of office buildings by Toyo Ito, Michael Graves, en Cie and Skidmore, Owings & Merill The overall masterplan was designed by Dutch architect Pi de Bruijn of the en Cie The construction of this 91m high tower if made out of steel, with a concrete core for stability Very recognizable characteristics of this building are the carved flight stairs and the prominent façade-profiles The Dutch designing counterpart was Van den Oever, Zaaijer & partners m² Main designer, Structural engineer Structural engineer Rafael Vinoly s van den Oever, Zaaijer & Partners architecten Deerns Raadgevende Ingenieurs Ingenieursgroep Van Rossum ING Real Estate Bjorn_Utpott photo: Norbert van Onna Take the train, or the subway to the WTC trainstation Mahler4 is situated at the best site on the A10 ring road, with easy access from two exits (S108 and S109) There are optimal traffic facilities, most of which will be at underground level in future Close to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, with the high speed train on the doorstep By tram it s only a short ride to the Dam or Amstelveen There are plenty of parking places (capacity for 1,950 cars, underground) 9

10 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Bjorn Utpott Parkrand Dr Colijnstraat CP Amsterdam The neighbourhood Geuzenveld is located in the western garden cities of Amsterdam There is plenty of public space available but most of these green spaces lack grandeur The project is regarded to be a 'key-operation within the urban renewal of Geuzeveld-Slotermeer The building should provide an iconographic quality to the neighbourhood which it was lacking before The housing block is situated at the edge of a park and consists out of 5 towers, positioned on a deck, carrying a two level roof plate The positioning of the towers provides a clear view from all apartments to the park Because of the holes, or empty spaces in-between, the dwellings behind the big block also still have a view on the park The title of the project - Parkrand means park-edge photo: Bjorn Utpott Developer MVRDV Kristal Het Oosten Bjorn_Utpott The Geuzenveld neighbourhood is west of the city centre of Amsterdam Tram line 13 takes you from the Central Train Station to the neighbourhood Geuzenveld Stop at Dhr H Colijnstraat You can also take bus number 21 and 192 from the centre Stop at Dhr H Colijnstraat 10

12 photo: Luuk Kramer photo: Luuk Kramer Hermitage Amsterdam Amstel DP Amsterdam photo: Luuk Kramer The Amstelhof building, which was built in the 17th century as a home for the elderly, has been renovated and refurbished to house a branch of the Hermitage Museum from St Petersburg The Hermitage has a collection of three million works of art, far more than can ever be shown in St Petersburg Pieces from the collection were first shown in the Nieuwe Kerk After several successful exhibitions of Russian art, the idea was born to establish an annex of the Hermitage here in Amsterdam Besides fine arts, this centre of Russian culture is used as a venue for concerts and symposiums, houses a library, a documentation centre and shops Project is public! 13 photo: Rien van Rijthoven photo: Rob Hoekstra Zouthavenbrug Piet Heinkade BR Amsterdam The new concert hall Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ is the figurehead on the bow of the Amsterdam Eastern Docklands The nautical character of the location is enhanced by connecting the building with the mainland by a bridge that is inspired by a gangplank Next door the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam welcomes cruise ships and offers a short walk to the canal boat marina under the bridge As befits a real gangplank, the bridge slopes somewhat askew from the quay to the entrance The only thing visible above the bridge deck are the railings on both sides which incorporate the lighting Underneath, a steel construction of 200 feet long and weighing almost 220 tons supports the bridge It's like a spinal column with 21 trusses that are kept in place by tension cables below During fabrication and after installation full-scale vibration tests determined the position and calibration of shock absorbers They assure that the bridge is firmly in place photo: Rien van Rijthoven Project is public! 17 photo: Naomi Schiphorst Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer Strawinskylaan XZ Amsterdam The new offices for this law firm are located in an existing freestanding building It's located between the new Amsterdam WTC, a dynamic cluster of new towers, and a residential neighbourhood of modest mid-century villas The project was initially only office interior design and grew into an architectural project The existing building had a strongly articulated façade of tinted glass, bow windows, reverse ziggurat corners, and pale cladding While impractical to reclad, it was important to renovate the base building architecture to some degree to improve its presence whilst emphasising its new life The architectural modifications concentrated on a clearly delineated T section through the building plan which encompasses all of the public environment of the building The new façade, whilst being much more transparent, has an integral strength in its finish and construction, respecting the structural matrix of the existing building photo: Naomi Schiphorst m² David Chipperfield s Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer Naomi Take subway/tram or train to 'Amsterdam Zuid WTC', and walk for another 2 minutes 17

18 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Luuk Kramer IJburg Block 14 Bert Haanstrakade DK Amsterdam Block 14 lies at a unique location within the Haveneiland grid, consisting of streets and closed blocks Due to the slight change of angle of the site, the block has a trapezium shape Taking into account the scant depth and the exceptionally positive conditions along the edges, it was logical to situate as many houses as possible along the banks and to allocate maximum openness to the inner area As a consequence, the houses profit fully from their situation on the IJ Water and also have a direct relationship with the more sheltered, semi-public inner area The court is connected to the quay via a spacious platform stairway The difference in height at the site offers the possibility of generating extraordinary transitions between public and private areas In addition to single-family dwellings with access to gardens, an unusual type of house has been introduced: the 'Zwebo', which is an abbreviation of the Dutch for 'floating single-family upstairs apartment' photo: Luuk Kramer m² Structural engineer Contractor DKV en ABT Smit's Bouwbedrijf IJ-Delta Ontwikkeling (Smit's Bouwbedrijf, Era Bouw, Bouwfonds, Ymere) DKV 18

21 photo: Jeroen Apers photo: Jeroen Apers Crystal Court Willem van Weldammelaan KT Amsterdam Crystal Court is located in Buitenveldert, next to the Gijsbrecht van Aemstelpark To keep a connection between the neighbourhood and the park and not to be a barrier, it was designed as an accumulation of square volumes with big openings in between As a result of the concept, all apartments have different plans and fascinating views through the building The basin around the building floats through the open spaces between the pile of housing volumes, marking the entrances with a clear relation between inside and outside These entrances can also be seen as the winter garden as it is designed as a hothouse photo: Matthijs Borghgraef m² TANGRAM Architekten Hillen & Roosen Apers 21

22 Hubertushuis Plantage Middenlaan DB Amsterdam Van Eyck's work lies in line with that important tradition of humanitarian modernism central to 20th century Dutch architecture The 6-storey Hubertus House cannot be viewed in isolation, although its social success is clearly a result of the way its particular design was carried out It is concerned with the spirit and the establishment of a comfortable scale for the building of this type and size (an open 'home' for single parents and their children) with the creation of a non-stressful environment, in a block that seems to say 'house' Like so many of Van Eyck's schemes, it was a cooperative effort with contributions from Hannie van Eyck and Theo Bosch in particular ( text from Dennis Sharp Twentieth Century ure: a Visual History p363) Project is public! m² Aldo van Eyck Hubertus Vereniging Wing-Ni photo: Wing-Ni Lam 22

23 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd Cadiz Wolbrantskerkweg CL Amsterdam The plan is organized into two rows parallel to the water, each consisting of three housing blocks The blocks are repeated along the rows in the tradition of the Western Garden Cities Along the Wolbrantskerkweg, these are broad and low The houses are mirrored to an indoor parking space with private gardens on top On the waterside family houses with private gardens form the base of blocks which are made taller and more slender, to give each house a view to the water Apartments with a roof terrace form the top stories of these blocks Between these slender blocks, public space is created towards the waterside The site forms a connection between two neighbouring parks Therefore the park is allowed to continue into the public area in between housing blocks photo: Dirk Verwoerd m² Abbink X de Haas Delta Forte dirkverwoerd 23

24 photo: Museum Het Schip photo: Museum Het Schip Museum Het Schip Oostzaanstraat WG Amsterdam Museum Het Schip is the architecture and design museum about the Amsterdam School and social housing It is located in the world famous workers palace 'Het Schip' by architect Michel de Klerk in Amsterdam Along the Spaarndammerplantsoen in Amsterdam, three monumental public housing complexes are designed by famous architect Michel de Klerk The most expressionistic block is nicknamed The Ship and belongs to the top of the Amsterdam School architectural movement of the early twentieth century The unconventional building exudes an air of festivity and is a true sculpture of bright orange bricksthe Ship is still inhabited and the museum is located in different parts of the building Every hour a guided tour (often in Dutch) leads around the building, to visit three other parts of the museum Next to Dutch tours there is an English tour at 15h Groups above 10 persons can always make a reservation for an extra guided tour photo: Museum Het Schip Project is public! 1921 Contractor Michel de Klerk Klaas Hille Eigen Haard dirkverwoerd tue-sun: 11:00-17:

25 photo: Iwan Baan Synagogue annex Community Centre Zuidelijke Wandelweg RK Amsterdam SeArch designed the new synagogue annex community center of the Liberal Jewish Congregation in Amsterdam The unstable relationship between Judaism and other religions and the dispersal of the Jewish diaspora have hindered the evolution of a recognized architectural style, this, in contrast to the strong and self-conscious personal Jewish identity Ceremonial traditions and rituals present few recognizable reference points in a synagogue s physical expression And while the identity of a church or a mosque is carved in stone, it is usually conspicuous in its absence with regard to synagogues In this shul the classical parallel installation is reduced to only the heart with the shaft between Biema (pulpit) and Aron Hakodesj (cabinet with the Torah), pointing to the east, being Jerusalem This traditional installation, which was used in the old synagogue for years, as well as the use of daylight are the main principles for the design photo: Iwan Baan Project is public! search MI_MOA Telephone: +31 (0) or info@verbondeu The building is located on a small island in the water that separates the Zuidelijke Wandelweg and the famous cemetery Zorgvlied In about one and a half year, the buildings on the west side will be demolished to create a larger space for water and a newly constructed dock, perpendicular to the Zuidelijke Wandelweg The already constructed bridge to the island built leads to the entrance on the ground floor 25

26 photo: Maarten Helle photo: Maarten Helle Stadsdeelwerf Zuideramstel Van Heenvlietlaan CL Amsterdam The striking, conspicuous appearance of this bright white building is deceptive, as it houses not an art gallery or an advertising agency but the City Cleansing Department and Parks and Public Gardens Department This playing with suggestion and patterns of expectation, which is deliberately evoked by a highly aesthetic architectural gesture, creates a field of tension between form and content The building thereby throws into disarray at least the conventions of utilitarian simplicity and the appropriate application of luxurious architecture The horizontal expanses of windows not only break the monotony of the façade but also create the impression of a sunken building because they are repeatedly placed just above ground level It looks as though the building has sunk into the ground under its own weight That semblance of fake weightiness is a further ironical feature in the unusual look of this everyday municipal depot photo: Maarten Helle m² Claus en Kaan en Municipality Zuideramstel HelleBeelden 26
