4 photo: Maarten Helle Studio Thonik Weesperzijde 79d 1091 EJ Amsterdam In this inner city courtyard the Amsterdam-based studio for visual communication, Thonik, has its atelier and house The two storey volume is wrapped by a polyurethane coating, a material that mergers the volume into a homogeneous building without details To emphasise on the 'plastic' effect of the material, originally bright orange had been chosen for the colour, a favourite colour from the palette of the users, Studio Thonik, graphic designers But, the inhabitants of the surrounding houses claimed they experienced serious nuisance from this colour Quote: ''The doctor had ordered me not to be preoccupied with it anymore It has given me so much private misery Orange does something to you It does not really hurt the eyes, it injures the mind" Part of the interior is designed bij Richard Hutten 2001 Main designer, Interior architect MVRDV Richard Hutten Thonik MI_MOA You can visit the inner courtyard throughout the day Tram 3, subway 51, 53, 54 stop at Wibautstraat 4

5 photo: Luuk Kramer photo: Luuk Kramer Qubic Stavangerweg AT Amsterdam In the Houthavens, a former harbour area on the West of the city centre of Amsterdam, 1000 students will temporarily be housed here Until the new housing developments start, these students will live on a ship (the Rochdale One), in former asylumseeker-housing and in 715 container-houses, that were designed bij hvdn architects The project was designed and built within 12 months The architects made a prefabricated system out of containers of 9 by 3 meters This system made that the houses could be built rapidly, they are re-usable and the costs were kept to a minimum Six different façades with six different colours where chosen to make several changing combinations Each unit contains a private kitchen, a shower and a toilet In the most northern block, at the IJ river is a restaurant and bar photo: Luuk Kramer m² Structural engineer hvdn architecten Ursem Bouwgroep De Principaal, Amsterdam hvdn-architecten The surrounding streets are open to the public 5

7 Control Building Westerkeersluis Van Diemenstraat CR Amsterdam This control post is an extension to an existing post on the same bridge It is used by the inner-city-water Amsterdam Municipal services for operating bridge nr 346, the bridges of train rails, guarding the harbour, collecting harbour fees and to organise meetings The view between the city and the harbour had to be kept unobstructed That is why a steel-frame structure, with a functional core was made, to lift the over hanging roof The surrounding glass façade provides a 360 view over the surroundings The steel frame roof is covered with a green polyurethane coating The soft green colour refers to the ship building industries, where this colour is used on desk of ships This way the building confirms the industrial use The windows of the meeting room are printed with a 17th century sea scape to block the sun Main designer, Structural engineer Contractor Zilt en Zicht en ABT Buitenhuis BV Dienst Infrastructuur Verkeer en Vervoer, Amsterdam MI_MOA Bus 22, stop Houtmanstraat; tram 3, stop Zoutkeetsgracht 7

8 photo: Hans Kuiper photo: Pakhuis de Zwijger Warehouse De Zwijger Piet Heinkade HC Amsterdam This warehouse was originally built in 1934 and is an exponent of the functional expressionism Two special elements of the concrete construction are the mushroom-columns and the large floors hanging over the ground floor It was used as a cooling house for food From 1960 onwards it deteriorated and was squatted and used as an underground practice space for several bands like Herman Brood and Loïs Lane Many plans for re-use and re-development failed to start In 2001 a bridge was built right through the building Shortly afterward it became a National Monument and now the warehouse is a place for media and culture It has a TV-studio, exposition-space, ateliers, conference rooms, offices, several stages for theatre, music, concerts and lectures On the ground floor is a public bar and restaurant Project is public! m², Interior architect Contractor enbureau J van Stigt MI_MOA Bouwbedrijf MJ de Nijs en Zn Stadsherstel Amsterdam photo: Hans Kuiper Bar/Restaurant Mon - Fri: 09:00-23:00 h Other functions in the building depend on their agenda From Central Station take tram 26 to IJburg; stop Kattenburgerstraat Or bus 42 to KNSM eiland, stop at Schaeferbrug 8

9 IJ tower Oostelijke Handelskade DN Amsterdam This seventy meters high, 20 stories apartment tower is situated on the dam towards the KNSM Island, in the former docklands, east of the centre of Amsterdam The tower has a regular facade composition with a diagonal window pattern Several 'holes' in the building give it a strong sculpturally and generate a variety of 20 different dwelling types The tower has been sculpted differently at each side The building works as an orientating element in the new dockland area The 3 stories plinth of the tower consists of a fitness club, roof garden, commercial retail spaces and a parking garage m² Structural engineer Contractor Neutelings Riedijk Ingenieursbureau Zonneveld Dura Vermeer Blauwhoed Eurowoningen, Rotterdam Naomi Tram 10 passes by Stop at Van Eesterenlaan 9

10 Bicycle Flat Stationsplein AB Amsterdam The 100 metre long bicycle flat at the Central Station was built to temporarily store thousands of bikes during the period that old bicycle-stands had to be removed during the large renovation of the surroundings at Central Station The building was built over water to maximise land-use (or in this case: water-use) It consists out of three slightly sloping parking decks There is a small surveillance facility in the centre of this quayside structure The bicycle flat was supposed to be closed and removed in 2004 In 2006 it still exists Now the flat is planned to be removed in 2009 There are plans to built a second one photo: Maarten Helle Project is public! m² VMX s Amsterdam City Council MI_MOA 24/7 Next to Central Station 10

11 photo: Maarten Helle UVA Dek Sarphatistraat GD Amsterdam These student houses are pretty small: 35 to 55 m2 To compensate their lack of physical space they get a large window on the street The windows are set, not in a conventional matrix, but move from side to side The ground floor is reserved for commercial space and large entrée halls with big glass façades The choice of materials is based upon the old monumental canal-facing warehouses The glass windows are enclosed with metal, a modern version of the wooden frames surrounding the windows on the canal houses The brick is painted black This way the façade is perceived as a flat stretch instead of separate bricks This is an effect often seen at the canals in Amsterdam m² Claus en Kaan en Woonstichting De Key, De Principaal, Amsterdam MI_MOA tram 10 and 7 and subway 53 stop at Weesperplein 11

12 photo: Maarten Helle Housing Sarphatistraat Sarphatistraat GD Amsterdam These apartments are designed as units with a large open space with open kitchen and enclosed bathroom They are built for the visiting scholars of the University of Amsterdam The only fixed elements are the service ducts, thus providing a large freedom in the configuration of the service-elements Each apartment had one huge oval window, cut out of the concrete These prefabricated concrete elements are made out of polyester-concrete m² VMX s Universiteit van Amsterdam MI_MOA tram 10 and 7 and subway 53 stop at Weesperplein 12

14 Piraeus Levantkade MJ Amsterdam The masterplan for the conversion of KNSM-island consists of a central boulevard, along which large residential blocks are aligned, interspersed with some old buildings, such as a former harbour canteen Housing block Piraeus, recognizable from afar due to its sloping roof, measures 170 by 57 meters It comprises 330 apartments, commercial spaces, an underground parking garage and two enclosed public spaces It is wrapped around a 19th century office building, which now contains appartments The south side of Piraeus is 4 stories high, the north 8 The block counts 150 different types of apartments, 95 % of which are social housing All façades are different in rhythm, details and openings 1994 Main designer, Artist Contractor Hans Kollhoff Rapp + Rapp Arno van der Mark Slokker Bouwmaatschappij bv De Doelen, woningbouwvereniging, Amsterdam MI_MOA Tram 10 to Azartplein Bus 41 / 42 to Azartplein 14

15 Hoogtij KNSM laan LL Amsterdam At the southern entrance of the Java-eiland, the large housing project of the Swiss architects Diener and Diener, is divided into two parts and links Java (west) and KNSM (eastern part of the island) with each other Both are made out of red bricks, but differ in shape and size West is the larger of the two: Langhaus Langhaus has large gaps on each side of the block It is 8 stories high The lower part, on the east side, is called Hofhaus It is a square shaped block, with a restaurant and ateliers on the ground floor This project raised very different reactions: some find it the little ugly duckling of the island, others think this is a masterpiece since it is very quiet photo: Maarten Helle 2000 Diener & Diener HelleBeelden Tram 10 stops at the Azartplein 15

16 photo: Christian Richters De Tropenpunt Mauritskade RP Amsterdam Opposite of the largest anthropological museum, The Tropenmuseum, a new apartment building was set up, De Tropenpunt It consists out of twelve luxurious apartments, above an exposition space, bar and 14 mechanically organized indoor parking lots Its triangular location forms the new end of a 19th century building block Because of this shape, the apartments have a special floor plan, with light coming in from both sides Also in the façade we can recognize a special scheme with light: a mix of vertical and horizontal lines of dark stone, glass and aluminium The floors at the corner slightly overlap each other m² Contractor Designed by Erick van Egeraat Bouwbedrijf MJ de Nijs en Zn De Principaal, Amsterdam MI_MOA East side of town: tram 9 and bus 22 stop at Linnaeusstraat 16

19 photo: Luis Monteiro photo: Luis Monteiro Nescio Bridge Buitenkerkerweg 1095 KL Amsterdam This cycle and pedestrian bridge is the longest in the, spanning the busy Rijn Kanaal in the IJburg district of Amsterdam The result of a close collaboration between architects and engineers, the bridge provides a vital connection for residents of IJburg, a suburb built on recently reclaimed land east of the city, with the Diemerpark at the mainland With its slender form, the bridge slots elegantly into its surroundingsthe bridge has a clear span of 170 m, providing the 10 cm clearance necessary for boats on the canal below The long approaches at either end have e a shallow gradient for cyclists and other bridge users Curved in plan, the bridge is designed to sit elegantly within the reclaimed landscape and to respect its unique ecological habitats A unique feature of this first suspension bridge in the is that the deck is suspended on one side only It is also Wilkinson Eyre s first project in the country photo: Bjorn Utpott Project is public! 2005 Structural engineer Wilkinson Eyre s Arup City of Amsterdam Bjorn_Utpott 24/7 Take tram 26 to IJburg, or tram 9 to Diemen 19

23 Passenger Terminal Amsterdam Piet Heinkade BR Amsterdam The Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) was the first completed building in the regeneration master plan for the revitalization of the Eastern Docklands Big cruise-ships can moore at the large terminal in walking distance from the city centre, next to the Music Building and Movenpick Hotel It houses a combination of functions: large meeting spaces, a touring car terminal, offices, a conference centre and an underground parking garage While in high season foreign visitors are welcomed, in low season the building is used for events, large commercial happenings, exhibitions and conferences The PTA is a joint venture between NS Stations (Dutch Railway Stations) and the Harbour of Amsterdam London architecture firm HOK provided it with a wave-like shape for the nautical look Project is public! m² Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum, Inc (HOK) BOAG Bouw Advies Groep BV Gemeentelijk Havenbedrijf Amsterdam Project manager MI_MOA The Passenger Terminal is aprox 15 minutes walking from Central Station Tram 26 from Central Station stops at the Music Building on the IJ, next-door 23

25 Australie - Boston Purperhoedenveem HM Amsterdam The urban plan for the Oostelijke Handelskade was developed by Rapp & Rapp, based on a series of monoliths, Australië - Boston lies in middle of the line These giants are being realized via construction envelopes that simultaneously guarantee good urbanism and a large freedom of design DKV decided to conserve the 19th century warehouse Australie and built a new U-shaped mass over the old warehouse, connecting each other with glass volumes The apartments in the old part are (to be) sold The new Boston are only rented apartments; high-end rent All have glass facades and an open floor-plan, with only one fixed element: the service block with bathroom and kitchen Inhabitants can use the indoor swimming pool, fitness and sauna inside neighbor deluxe Detroit In 2002, with the construction fully underway, the Australië - Boston warehouse was completely destroyed by fire Because it was the determining image for the entire complex, it was decided to reconstruct the building 2006 DKV en Vesteda MI_MOA Boston is just 10 min walking form Central Station Or take tram 26 to IJburg and stop at Kattenburgerstraat 25

27 Three climates greenhouse Plantage Middenlaan 2a 1018 DD Amsterdam The Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam is one of the oldest botanic gardens in the world Today, there are more than 6,000 plants (>4,000 species) growing in the garden and greenhouses The eye-catcher is the ultramodern construction of the three-climate greenhouse designed by Zwarts and Jansma The greenhouse is subdivided into 3 zones for different types of climates: a tropical, a subtropical and a desert climate, separated by glass walls A computer system automatically controls the temperature and humidity in the 3 different areas To reduce costs, the façade was made with mass-production greenhouse components The main load-bearing structure was designed as slender as possible for optimum daylight in the greenhouse High up in the glasshouse there is a steel walkway with a glazed floor, offering a view of the treetops The bridge structure consists of a round tube, which also supports the handrails and the supports for the glass floor Project is public! m² Technical engineer Zwarts & Jansma s ABT Stichting Interim Beheer Hortus Botanicus MI_MOA Monday to Friday: h Saturday: h Sun and Holidays: h In December and Januari the garden closes at 16:00 h In July and August the Hortus is open till 21:00 h daily The restaurant in the Orangerie is also open during summer Tram 9 and 14: stop at mr Visserplein Subway: stop at Waterlooplein (exit at the Hortusplantsoen) 27

28 Botania Anne Frankstraat BZ Amsterdam At the crossing of the Nieuwe Herengracht and the Entrepotdok the Botania apartment complex rises out of the water The autonomous brick façade refers to the Amsterdam canal houses and the composition of white wooden window frames with green glass is a modern version of the traditional urban block It has 40 apartments that enclose an inner courtyard The 1000 m2 of commercial space on the ground floor is at certain places set back, behind the main façade, to create entrances and public space m² de Architekten Cie Botania BV, Amsterdam MI_MOA Tram 9 and 14 pass closeby at the Plantage Middenlaan 28
