2 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Bjorn Utpott Milos Housing Carolina MacGillavrylaan XA Amsterdam This housing complex Milos is part of a larger mixed-used development around the Science Park Amsterdam, located in the neighbourhood Watergraafsmeer The Science Park is transformed into an international knowledge centre, and next to new educational buildings and related companies, the area is completed with housing Milos is the most western building with a plinth of 4 to 5 layers, and a 45m high tower The complex gives the impression of a modern castle, surrounded by water Pedestrians and cyclists enter the building by passing a bridge The closed inner courtyard is furnished with wooden floors Because of the situation next to the railway tracks, the building has a double façade: a glass screen is placed in front of the thermal skin, and serves as a sound barrier Contractor hvdn architecten Heddes Hopman Interheem Groep Bjorn_Utpott photo: Bjorn Utpott The Sciencepark is close to trainstation Muiderpoort You can also take bus

3 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Bjorn Utpott Parkrand Dr Colijnstraat CP Amsterdam The neighbourhood Geuzenveld is located in the western garden cities of Amsterdam There is plenty of public space available but most of these green spaces lack grandeur The project is regarded to be a 'key-operation within the urban renewal of Geuzeveld-Slotermeer The building should provide an iconographic quality to the neighbourhood which it was lacking before The housing block is situated at the edge of a park and consists out of 5 towers, positioned on a deck, carrying a two level roof plate The positioning of the towers provides a clear view from all apartments to the park Because of the holes, or empty spaces in-between, the dwellings behind the big block also still have a view on the park The title of the project - Parkrand means park-edge photo: Bjorn Utpott Developer MVRDV Kristal Het Oosten Bjorn_Utpott The Geuzenveld neighbourhood is west of the city centre of Amsterdam Tram line 13 takes you from the Central Train Station to the neighbourhood Geuzenveld Stop at Dhr H Colijnstraat You can also take bus number 21 and 192 from the centre Stop at Dhr H Colijnstraat 3

8 Timorplein Celebesstraat EJ Amsterdam New housing replacing existing buildings in 4 locations, comprising a total of 128 apartments, in 3 different phases The first section, on Timorplein (square) was built in 2002 The second section is on the corner of Borneostraat and Delistraat The third section includes the end of the flats on Celebesstraat These end flats are linked by a car park that runs underneath Delistraat The flats on Celebesstraat are along the railway line Despite the need for sound reduction the architect decided to use the same storey-high windows that characterize the neighbors The large amount of space gives the apartments a very light, spacious feel The 72 units in this 3th section are very diverse in type, ranging from apartments to maisonettes, to penthouses and studio apartments The project also includes 21 social sector apartments, 2 of which are studio apartments This is a very beautiful urban plan, interacting with the existing structures in a very sensitive and subtle way 2004 Contractor Structural engineer Dok en Vink Bouw Nieuwkoop Strackee De Alliantie MI_MOA Take tram 9 from Central Station direction Diemen Stop at Lineausstraat and walk north, into the 'Eerste van Swindenstraat' Go left at the Celebesstraat, walk for 100 m and you'll see the houses on your left 8

9 photo: Luuk Kramer photo: Luuk Kramer School 'tij49 Frans Zieglerstraat HN Amsterdam Blok 49 on IJburg is reserved to accommodate unusual functions and activities such as Blijburg, a temporary beach with its associated bars This temporary school, with a planned lifespan of 20 years, is intended to accommodate the forecast swell in the number of IJburg's schoolchildren The proposal involves a three-storey building with a wide, double-loaded central corridor The three entrances are located in the building's long elevation facing the schoolyard To harmonise the stacked prefabricated elements into a convincing building, the horizontal bands in the façade are strongly articulated The cantilevered strips also function as effective sun screens and shelter for the entrances They are finished with a sprayed rubber layer, white on the outside and with a different brightly coloured soffit per floor The colouring corresponds with the school's internal colour scheme By illuminating the bands at night, the building acts as a beacon in the neighbourhood photo: Luuk Kramer Structural engineer hvdn architecten Ursem Bouwgroep Stadsdeel Zeeburg hvdn-architecten 9

10 photo: Christian Richters photo: Christian Richters Pavilion Lloydplein Lloydplein BZ Amsterdam This pavilion is situated on the Lloydplein, a square along the river IJ in Amsterdam It is a freestanding object, framed on three sides by several large complexes It has spacious views towards the harbour on the north side The building has been designed as two interwoven volumes: on the ground floor, a space for the catering industry, and on the first floor an office space The two patios on the first floor and the stairwell diversify the volume and refine the shape The total complex of dark-stained stone with frames of zinc forms a distinct sculpture on the square, with a framed window on the head of the volume guaranteeing a spectacular view towards the river photo: Christian Richters Public access unknown! m² Bekkering Adams en Blauwhoed Vastgoed Bekkering_Adams Tram 10 to stop C van Eesterenlaan, or: Tram 10 or 26 to stop Rietlandpark, then walk about 300m 10

11 photo: Luuk Kramer photo: Luuk Kramer Loftice De Ruyterkade AB Amsterdam With the development of the South Bank of the IJ, Amsterdam is rapidly acquiring a big new inner city area The small strip of ware and trading houses at the Ruyterkade still has its old historical flair This new office fills a left over gap It has two faces In keeping with the adjoining buildings, the front façade has an imposing character with a stone plinth and a glazed elevation The back is more closed with silver and dark blue profiled steel plates It has a large floor hanging over the railway tracks In between these two is a large glass atrium By its external shape, it is to produce a symbolic link across the railway track joining the old town and river The inside organization is reminiscent of the neo-classical canal house When viewed from a travelling train, the building seems to change its colour from silver to dark blue The name is a fusion of loft and office It reflects the idea of large, open and attractive space of the work environment m² Services engineer Contractor Bastiaan Jongerius ABT Slavenburg Rami Exploitatiemaatschappij bv bastiaanjongerius photo: Luuk Kramer Just behind and next to Central Station, Amsterdam 11

12 photo: Rien van Rijthoven photo: Rob Hoekstra Zouthavenbrug Piet Heinkade BR Amsterdam The new concert hall Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ is the figurehead on the bow of the Amsterdam Eastern Docklands The nautical character of the location is enhanced by connecting the building with the mainland by a bridge that is inspired by a gangplank Next door the Passenger Terminal Amsterdam welcomes cruise ships and offers a short walk to the canal boat marina under the bridge As befits a real gangplank, the bridge slopes somewhat askew from the quay to the entrance The only thing visible above the bridge deck are the railings on both sides which incorporate the lighting Underneath, a steel construction of 200 feet long and weighing almost 220 tons supports the bridge It's like a spinal column with 21 trusses that are kept in place by tension cables below During fabrication and after installation full-scale vibration tests determined the position and calibration of shock absorbers They assure that the bridge is firmly in place photo: Rien van Rijthoven Project is public! 13 photo: architour photo: City of Amsterdam, Archives Borneo Sporenburg C van Eesterenlaan JK Amsterdam A total of 2500 dwellings have been built on the two former harbour peninsulas Borneo and Sporenburg The area was covered with a carpet of low-rise/high-density back-to-back patio houses, interrupted by 3 large landmark buildings Various architects each designed a type of patio house, which were grouped in small clusters and re-appear in several places on the islands The main challenge was to develop a typology in which a small patio provides daylight and private outdoor space for the inhabitants photo: City of Amsterdam, Archives Project is public! 1997 Urban planner West 8 City of Amsterdam Naomi The nicest way to go to the Eastern Docklands, is to take the boat from the Central Station to the Java-island It leaves from behind the central station, at pier 7 It's a free ride, and takes about 10 min, to the head of the Java-island From there it's about 15 min walking to the KNSM-island and 20 min to Sporenburg and Borneo You can also take tram 10 or 26 from Central Station Or rent a bike 13

16 photo: Maarten Helle Studio Thonik Weesperzijde 79d 1091 EJ Amsterdam In this inner city courtyard the Amsterdam-based studio for visual communication, Thonik, has its atelier and house The two storey volume is wrapped by a polyurethane coating, a material that mergers the volume into a homogeneous building without details To emphasise on the 'plastic' effect of the material, originally bright orange had been chosen for the colour, a favourite colour from the palette of the users, Studio Thonik, graphic designers But, the inhabitants of the surrounding houses claimed they experienced serious nuisance from this colour Quote: ''The doctor had ordered me not to be preoccupied with it anymore It has given me so much private misery Orange does something to you It does not really hurt the eyes, it injures the mind" Part of the interior is designed bij Richard Hutten 2001 Main designer, Interior architect MVRDV Richard Hutten Thonik MI_MOA You can visit the inner courtyard throughout the day Tram 3, subway 51, 53, 54 stop at Wibautstraat 16

17 photo: Domagoj Blazevic photo: 3LHD Zamet Centre Boze Vidasa Rijeka Croatia Zamet Centre hosts various facilities: a sports hall with 2380 seats, local community offices, a library, retail spaces and a garage The building's main architectural element are ribbon-like, linear stripes stretching over the site, functioning at the same time as an architectural design element of the object and as a zoning element which forms a public square The stripes were inspired by 'gromaca', a type of rock specific to Rijeka, which the centre artificially reinterprets by colour and shape The stripes are paved with ceramic tiles The steel construction and the girder span of 55 metres allow the natural illumination of the sports hall It contains supporting facilities for professional training and competition, while the auditorium with telescopic stands enables the transformation from everyday use to other activities (concerts, conferences, etc) photo: Domagoj Blazevic Project is public! m² 3LHD Grad Rijeka / Rijeka Sport 3LHD 17
