3 photo: architour photo: Allard van der Hoek The Whale Baron G A Tindalplein TW Amsterdam The Whale is one of three big meteorites which have landed in-between the lowrise row houses on the Islands of Borneo and Sporenburg Thanks to its sculptural shape, this building by Frits van Dongen is a real landmark Inside are 194 apartments and 1100 m2 office and retail space Underneath is a large parking garage with 179 places The traditional closed block (100 by 60 m) has been transformed by lifting the two, so the public space flows through underneath Inside the block is a private garden, designed by West 8 The apartments are accessed from galleries running along the inner façade m² Main designer, Landscape architect Supplier Structural engineer de Architekten Cie West 8 Heijmans NedZink NTV Pieters Bouwtechniek Ontwikkelingsmaatschappij New Deal MI_MOA photo: Luis Monteiro 3

4 photo: Maarten Helle Studio Thonik Weesperzijde 79d 1091 EJ Amsterdam In this inner city courtyard the Amsterdam-based studio for visual communication, Thonik, has its atelier and house The two storey volume is wrapped by a polyurethane coating, a material that mergers the volume into a homogeneous building without details To emphasise on the 'plastic' effect of the material, originally bright orange had been chosen for the colour, a favourite colour from the palette of the users, Studio Thonik, graphic designers But, the inhabitants of the surrounding houses claimed they experienced serious nuisance from this colour Quote: ''The doctor had ordered me not to be preoccupied with it anymore It has given me so much private misery Orange does something to you It does not really hurt the eyes, it injures the mind" Part of the interior is designed bij Richard Hutten 2001 Main designer, Interior architect MVRDV Richard Hutten Thonik MI_MOA You can visit the inner courtyard throughout the day Tram 3, subway 51, 53, 54 stop at Wibautstraat 4

5 photo: Hans Kuiper photo: Pakhuis de Zwijger Warehouse De Zwijger Piet Heinkade HC Amsterdam This warehouse was originally built in 1934 and is an exponent of the functional expressionism Two special elements of the concrete construction are the mushroom-columns and the large floors hanging over the ground floor It was used as a cooling house for food From 1960 onwards it deteriorated and was squatted and used as an underground practice space for several bands like Herman Brood and Loïs Lane Many plans for re-use and re-development failed to start In 2001 a bridge was built right through the building Shortly afterward it became a National Monument and now the warehouse is a place for media and culture It has a TV-studio, exposition-space, ateliers, conference rooms, offices, several stages for theatre, music, concerts and lectures On the ground floor is a public bar and restaurant Project is public! m², Interior architect enbureau J van Stigt MI_MOA Bouwbedrijf MJ de Nijs en Zn Stadsherstel Amsterdam photo: Hans Kuiper Bar/Restaurant Mon - Fri: 09:00-23:00 h Other functions in the building depend on their agenda From Central Station take tram 26 to IJburg; stop Kattenburgerstraat Or bus 42 to KNSM eiland, stop at Schaeferbrug 5

6 IJ tower Oostelijke Handelskade DN Amsterdam This seventy meters high, 20 stories apartment tower is situated on the dam towards the KNSM Island, in the former docklands, east of the centre of Amsterdam The tower has a regular facade composition with a diagonal window pattern Several 'holes' in the building give it a strong sculpturally and generate a variety of 20 different dwelling types The tower has been sculpted differently at each side The building works as an orientating element in the new dockland area The 3 stories plinth of the tower consists of a fitness club, roof garden, commercial retail spaces and a parking garage m² Structural engineer Neutelings Riedijk Ingenieursbureau Zonneveld Dura Vermeer Blauwhoed Eurowoningen, Rotterdam Naomi Tram 10 passes by Stop at Van Eesterenlaan 6

7 Bicycle Flat Stationsplein AB Amsterdam The 100 metre long bicycle flat at the Central Station was built to temporarily store thousands of bikes during the period that old bicycle-stands had to be removed during the large renovation of the surroundings at Central Station The building was built over water to maximise land-use (or in this case: water-use) It consists out of three slightly sloping parking decks There is a small surveillance facility in the centre of this quayside structure The bicycle flat was supposed to be closed and removed in 2004 In 2006 it still exists Now the flat is planned to be removed in 2009 There are plans to built a second one photo: Maarten Helle Project is public! m² VMX s Amsterdam City Council MI_MOA 24/7 Next to Central Station 7

8 Piraeus Levantkade MJ Amsterdam The masterplan for the conversion of KNSM-island consists of a central boulevard, along which large residential blocks are aligned, interspersed with some old buildings, such as a former harbour canteen Housing block Piraeus, recognizable from afar due to its sloping roof, measures 170 by 57 meters It comprises 330 apartments, commercial spaces, an underground parking garage and two enclosed public spaces It is wrapped around a 19th century office building, which now contains appartments The south side of Piraeus is 4 stories high, the north 8 The block counts 150 different types of apartments, 95 % of which are social housing All façades are different in rhythm, details and openings 1994 Main designer, Artist Hans Kollhoff Rapp + Rapp Arno van der Mark Slokker Bouwmaatschappij bv De Doelen, woningbouwvereniging, Amsterdam MI_MOA Tram 10 to Azartplein Bus 41 / 42 to Azartplein 8

9 Hoogtij KNSM laan LL Amsterdam At the southern entrance of the Java-eiland, the large housing project of the Swiss architects Diener and Diener, is divided into two parts and links Java (west) and KNSM (eastern part of the island) with each other Both are made out of red bricks, but differ in shape and size West is the larger of the two: Langhaus Langhaus has large gaps on each side of the block It is 8 stories high The lower part, on the east side, is called Hofhaus It is a square shaped block, with a restaurant and ateliers on the ground floor This project raised very different reactions: some find it the little ugly duckling of the island, others think this is a masterpiece since it is very quiet photo: Maarten Helle 2000 Diener & Diener HelleBeelden Tram 10 stops at the Azartplein 9

10 photo: Christian Richters De Tropenpunt Mauritskade RP Amsterdam Opposite of the largest anthropological museum, The Tropenmuseum, a new apartment building was set up, De Tropenpunt It consists out of twelve luxurious apartments, above an exposition space, bar and 14 mechanically organized indoor parking lots Its triangular location forms the new end of a 19th century building block Because of this shape, the apartments have a special floor plan, with light coming in from both sides Also in the façade we can recognize a special scheme with light: a mix of vertical and horizontal lines of dark stone, glass and aluminium The floors at the corner slightly overlap each other m² Designed by Erick van Egeraat Bouwbedrijf MJ de Nijs en Zn De Principaal, Amsterdam MI_MOA East side of town: tram 9 and bus 22 stop at Linnaeusstraat 10

15 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Maarten Helle Booster Station South Spaklerweg 1099 BB Amsterdam One of four new booster sewage pumping stations is situated in an industrial area in the city s Zuideramstel district, on the corner of a busy junction and right next to a railway viaduct The building contains 3 pumps, a high- and low-tension unit, a traveling crane and pipes Because the stainless steel façade is stretched like a tight skin around this minimal programme, the building looks like a streamlined science fiction sculpture Almost like a spaceship The incoming and outgoing pipes, together with the ventilation grilles, are exposed to view on the side of the road and contribute to the booster station s aerodynamic appearance photo: Bjorn Utpott m² Structural engineer GROUP A ABT JP van Eesteren DWR Waternet Bjorn_Utpott You can not enter the building, or visit the interior, but the exterior is 24/7 visible from the street Subway 53, 54 stop at Van de Madeweg 15

16 photo: architour Borneo Sporenburg Bridges Panamakade AX Amsterdam Two red steel bridges span the water between the residential islands Sporenburg and Borneo The pedestrian bridge is very high and designed as an architectural walk, taking pedestrians to a height where they have a spectacular view over the surrounding patio houses and also allowing sail boats to access a small marina The lower bridge at the opposite end of the harbour is made for disabled persons, buggies and bikes photo: Matthijs Borghgraef Project is public! 2000 Landscape architect West 8 Ontwikkelingsbedrijf Amsterdam Naomi 24/7 in public space The nicest way to go to the Eastern Docklands, is to take the boat from the Central Station to the Java-island It leaves from behind the central station, at pier 7 It's a free ride, and takes about 10 min, to the head of the Java-island From there it's about 15 min walking to the KNSM-island and 20 min to Sporenburg and Borneo 16

17 photo: architour photo: City of Amsterdam, Archives Borneo Sporenburg C van Eesterenlaan JK Amsterdam A total of 2500 dwellings have been built on the two former harbour peninsulas Borneo and Sporenburg The area was covered with a carpet of low-rise/high-density back-to-back patio houses, interrupted by 3 large landmark buildings Various architects each designed a type of patio house, which were grouped in small clusters and re-appear in several places on the islands The main challenge was to develop a typology in which a small patio provides daylight and private outdoor space for the inhabitants photo: City of Amsterdam, Archives Project is public! 1997 Urban planner West 8 City of Amsterdam Naomi The nicest way to go to the Eastern Docklands, is to take the boat from the Central Station to the Java-island It leaves from behind the central station, at pier 7 It's a free ride, and takes about 10 min, to the head of the Java-island From there it's about 15 min walking to the KNSM-island and 20 min to Sporenburg and Borneo You can also take tram 10 or 26 from Central Station Or rent a bike 17

22 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Bjorn Utpott Parkrand Dr Colijnstraat CP Amsterdam The neighbourhood Geuzenveld is located in the western garden cities of Amsterdam There is plenty of public space available but most of these green spaces lack grandeur The project is regarded to be a 'key-operation within the urban renewal of Geuzeveld-Slotermeer The building should provide an iconographic quality to the neighbourhood which it was lacking before The housing block is situated at the edge of a park and consists out of 5 towers, positioned on a deck, carrying a two level roof plate The positioning of the towers provides a clear view from all apartments to the park Because of the holes, or empty spaces in-between, the dwellings behind the big block also still have a view on the park The title of the project - Parkrand means park-edge photo: Bjorn Utpott Developer MVRDV Kristal Het Oosten Bjorn_Utpott The Geuzenveld neighbourhood is west of the city centre of Amsterdam Tram line 13 takes you from the Central Train Station to the neighbourhood Geuzenveld Stop at Dhr H Colijnstraat You can also take bus number 21 and 192 from the centre Stop at Dhr H Colijnstraat 22

23 photo: Bjorn Utpott photo: Dirk Verwoerd De Kikker Evertsweertplantsoen RK Amsterdam Two primary schools, a day-care centre and an area health authority share a new, green complex: a Community School in the neighbourhood Osdorp The goal is to encourage interaction between the groups The design allows each individual part of the building to function at its best Each classroom, for example, has a block containing a cloakroom, toilets, kitchen, (computer) work stations and a mezzanine The whole complex surrounds two inner courtyards in the form of a communal assembly hall and winter garden This forms the basis for the placing of two playgrounds One, for the youngest children, is safely fenced off, the other, for the older and local children has a large platform The whole supporting section of the building is made of wood, making it light in terms of weight and in its overall effect Wood is also a tactile, soft, colourful and varied material, this makes the whole building much more welcoming The project was nicknamed 'The Frog' (in Dutch: De Kikker) photo: Dirk Verwoerd m² Dok en Heijmans Stadsdeel Osdorp Bjorn_Utpott Tram 1 stop at: Baden Powellweg Tram 17 stop at: Baden Powellweg Train Station Lelylaan, then take tram 1 or 17 with direction Osdorp 23

25 The Funen Funenpark NL-1018 AK Amsterdam This housing project is part of the larger urban masterplan 'The Funen Park', also designed by de Architekten Cie The urban plan in characterized by an inner area with sufficient green space, a park-like area with smaller building typologies This inner-space is surrounded by these large scale mixed use buildings The peripheral construction protects the inner area and also serves as a sound barrier against noise from the railway Four small gates, which adjoin the entrance halls, and one large gateway provides access to and view of the inner area The peripheral construction was designed by a single architect The contrast between the peripheral construction and the inner area enlivens the whole complex 2005 de Architekten Cie Heijmans Heijmans MI_MOA 25

26 photo: architour photo: Matthijs Borghgraef Café-restaurant OPEN Westerdoksplein AZ Amsterdam An old turn track bridge on Westerdokskade in Amsterdam, dating from 1922, has been transformed into a café-restaurant by Dutch architect Pi de Bruijn / De ArchitektenCie A simple, transparent volume was placed on top of the old bridge The modernist box has an all-round folding glass façade, giving visitors a view of the surrounding harbour and water from every angle Inside, two separate units containing the kitchen, toilets and bar are placed freely within the volume, giving the interior a light and open character photo: Maarten Helle Project is public! 27 photo: Luuk Kramer photo: Luuk Kramer Albatros Johan van Hasseltweg WV Amsterdam The area around the van Hasseltweg in Amsterdam North is to be developed, setting large urban scale projects amongst the existing small 'garden-village' housing estates The planning activity is concentrated around the location of the new North/South axis metro station and the Albatros is the first of the projects to come on stream The most important challenge in designing the Albatros was reconciling the confrontation between the scales of the new large developments and that of the surrounding housing In order that the building would not act as a huge barrier within the neighbourhood, it was decided to 'break it up' by dividing it into four tower-like fins arranged on a base or plinth This plinth contains all the commercial and community orientated services and is equal in height to the neighbouring structures The 130 dwellings are housed in the four fins above The building as a whole has the appearance of a large scale sculpture hvdn architecten Bouwbedrijf De Waal De Principaal hvdn-architecten photo: Luuk Kramer 27

29 photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Dirk Verwoerd Four Towers Jan van Zutphenplantsoen 1069 Amsterdam In Osdorp, SW of Amsterdam, major changes are under way to transform a currently vacant zone into a residential district connected to the existing housing area alongside it All towers are sited according to the given urban footprint and take up the maximum envelope, giving a total of 390 apartments evenly distributed over 11 levels The plan allows for a high degree of interchangeability of layouts so as to offer a diversity of apartment types A central core and a number of strategically positioned service shafts enable the different types to mirror and shift not only with regard to each other but also in terms of the spatial configuration within one apartment An aluminum cladding indicates the separation between the apartments, while the mirroring concept of the plan results in a playful façade pattern ranging between alteration and iteration, between standardizing and individualizing The twofold elements bring about a subtle discontinuation within the unitized surface photo: Dirk Verwoerd 2008 Wiel Arets s Delta Forte jpmm 29
